Suffering from ads?

Having been to the toilet bowl, aka, the Shreveport independence bowl twice in the late nineties (Ole Miss undergrad) (and perhaps this year if that's where Mizzou goes) I can say that it leaves a lot to be desired.

The Huskers know the Toilet Bowl, being beat by Ole Miss there last year. Hopefully Solich's firing will ensure we're never there again.

Yes, unfortunately that was the one I couldn't get to, would have loved to have seen it. I saw Ole Miss defeat Oklahoma and Texas Tech there. Blah

god I hope we're in the cotton bowl this year.

Maybe if the new coach (walt harris?) installs a modern offense a better qb will come along. Does Neb have the receivers in place now?

I wouldn't be so sure about Harris getting the job. The more I think about it, the more it looks like Bo Pelini will get the position, which is fine with me. There's your next Bob Stoops right there.

And no, we don't have the receivers in place. We have a decent crop of young receivers, but they're more suited for a play-action passing attack than a Pitt-style offense.

Oh, and since Imran brought up Barry Switzer earlier, here's what he had to say about Solich's firing. Seems Switzer thought it was a good move, but what does he know?

That may be generous John .

He's also been there for six years and has overseen a huge drop in talent from the Osborne era. Don't forget that Solich made his title run with Osborne's last recruiting class. All in all, the situation is nothing like Zook's if you actually take an in-depth look at the two.

Um... Zook has been there for 2 years. Solich in his 2nd was better than Zook. How is there much difference between the two?

quote:

What do I care about what Switzer thought? I only brought him up to say Nebraska is going to through a period that Oklahoma did when Switzer left.

Coaches aren't always the best in detailing the game... I point to Schottenheimer as an announcer as proof of that.

This thread is about college football, but I did hear an interesting fact on MNF: the last 12 coaches to win a Super Bowl never played the game in the NFL. The last coach to win a SB to have played in the NFL was Ditka.

Even if we do go 6-5, we'll still have more national titles in the previous decade than Georgia has had in its history.

quote:

This is where I'd poke fun at your college team, but you don't really have one. NFL scum...

quote:
Um... Zook has been there for 2 years. Solich in his 2nd was better than Zook. How is there much difference between the two?

Are you that dense? Zook is trying to run his system with players left over from Spurrier's era, recruited for Spurrier's system. You can't properly judge Zook until he's using players he recruited for his system. From the fourth year on is the real test.

Solich, meanwhile, crossed the four year mark and his teams promptly went to ****. It's now patently obvious that Solich was living off the remains of Osborne's dynasty in his first four years and can't recruit the same type of talent himself. Since Osborne's last class left (Eric Crouch et al.), Solich has gone 16-12 and is 1-8 against ranked teams. He's been a complete failure since the team truly became his, which is something you can't determine about Zook yet.

Now do you see why the two situations aren't comparable?

quote:
Coaches aren't always the best in detailing the game... I point to Schottenheimer as an announcer as proof of that.

You didn't just compare Schottenheimer and Switzer, did you? Yet another bizarre comparison; I can't think of two coaches who are more different from each other.

from what i've read on ESPN, If LSU, Boise State, and Oklahoma all won, then it would be LSU vs Oklahoma in the suger bowl and a very happy Rose Bowl selection commitee. If Oklahoma falls to #2 in the polls between USC and LSU then its USC in the sugar bowl vs Oklahoma. If OU falls to number 3 and Boise State wills then LSU will likely face Oklahoma in the big game.

Right now it depends on the Hawaii-Boise State game which is in the 1st quarter and the humans polls tommorow.

Either way, what a shocker in Kansas City.

If USC is #1 in the polls, but doesn't get to participate in the championship game, that would be fun! TCO would have enough controversy to last him for years.

ESPN has been talking up USC versus LSU after the OU loss. They have been pretty straight forward about Oklahoma not deserving to have bid after losing to K State. Not that I'm arguing OU deserves to be in the Sugar Bowl. They slacked off their last two games.

They have gotten into the rut of not playing up to their full potentional after being accused of running up the score and I think it kind of bit them in the butt for this last game.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Where are all you people who just a few weeks ago said OU was 'unbeatable' and laughed at me for saying USC had a chance to beat Oklahoma.

Once again, I get the last laugh .

And this was GREAT! Shows how ****ed the BCS is. This was the situation the BCS wanted to avoid at all costs. OU will probably end up going to the Sugar Bowl, even though both USC and LSU won their conference while OU did not.

Once again the BCS will be shown to be BS.

quote:
Now do you see why the two situations aren't comparable?

Then why did people call for Ron Zook's head at UF when they were 3-3? I mean, it was Spurrier's players. Of course it is comparable! If you think the guy can't recruit that well help him there.

However, he has shown himself to be a good coach. Last year, Nebraska was mediocre, which drives Solich's after 4 years numbers down, but with SOLICH'S players, Nebraska went 9-3! Under your argument, Solich is responsible for a 9-3 year, recruiting and coaching wise.

I said OU looked unbeatable as long as they played the way they were playing. They didn't seem to be putting forth the effort in this game. They were constantly missing catches by being just a little to far behind or letting K State out scramble them for the ball. Not the OU of earlier.

And USC still hasn't beaten Oklahoma.

Although they mentioned playing the Bowls by their traditional methods and then having a title game AFTER all the bowls on ESPN. Might not be a bad alternative since the NCAA wants to keep Division I as the only football system without a playoff.

And you can make the argument that K-State beat down Oklahoma and not Oklahoma beating themselves. After all, they did let up 230+ yards to Sproul. That by itself would have killed them.

My predicts:

Sugar: USC v. Oklahoma
Rose: Michigan v. LSU
Orange: Miami v. Ohio State
Fiesta: Florida State v. Kansas State

I had Texas listed, but I just read something saying NO conference can have more than TWO teams in the BCS bowls. So Texas is out.

So this is what the BCS bowls MUST have:

Big XII: Kansas State
Big 10: Michigan (in the Rose Bowl)
Big East: Miami
ACC: Florida State
Pac 10: USC
SEC: LSU

Then two at large teams, but no more than two teams can come from a single conference. Oklahoma is guarenteed to be one at-large. I bet the other will be Ohio State. If not Ohio State, then Tennessee.

Just don't see Tenneesee in the mix because of having played Miami already this year. The only hope Tennesse has would be for USC/Oklahoma Sugar bowl. Then I can see a slim chance of:

Rose: Florida State vs. Michigan

Orange: LSU vs. Miami

Fiesta: Tennessee vs. Kansas State

Tennesse would have to go to eithier the Rose or Fiesta because I can't imagine the Orange Bowl taking anybody over Miami. That would pit TN against eithier Michigan or Kansas State(assuming that Fiesta ends up with KState, which seems logical). The most likely match up here would be Kansas State.

How would a playoff solve this? You still have to determine which of the numerous two-loss teams gets a shot at the title and which don't. You just move the decision-making farther down the line. No, I'd much rather keep this system and all the fun that goes with it.

quote:
Under your argument, Solich is responsible for a 9-3 year, recruiting and coaching wise.

Yeah, a 9-3 year that saw a 4th quarter meltdown of epic proportions at Missouri and blowouts versus Texas and K-State, including the worst loss at home since before Bob Devaney took over. Solich was responsible for that, so I don't feel at all guilty about letting him go. Nebraska should be doing better.

At least Pete Carroll, coach of USC, knows what college football is all about...

quote:
Carroll acknowledged his disappointment, then explained it away.

"We lost a darn game," he said, standing amid the detritus of a postgame locker room. On Sept. 27, USC lost at California, 34-31, in triple overtime. "If we hadn't lost a game, we'd be already in. We left the door open for some issue. That's why I've been able to handle this. I've felt like that the whole way through. I'm still pissed we lost a game."

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/colum...ivan&id=1680114

The man is exactly right. All these teams ****ed up and let their fate slip out of their hands. Now they should just shut up and find out where the system sends them. If they're lucky, they'll get an unearned shot at the national title. If they aren't, well, they might still get to play in the Rose Bowl. Not that bad a deal, really.
