I agree with NYE... GCA has at least 1 swordsman army. Our two swordsmen sitting on top of that mountain aren't going to be worth much if they kill them.

Pillaging and then putting both swords back on the galley appeals to me, but I'm still tempted by Trip's suggestion of fortifying both and forcing GCA to come after them.

Got spare money?

CFC said that the GCA Sword army was down to 6/14 in HP after attacking their Pike. I doubt we will see it for some time.

When exactly was this? The Army will be retreating towards that city, and if they have a Barracks somewhere then they could be helaed soon after returning. Both options sound good to me - the only certain thing is for next turn pillage.

It was the turn before they made peace.

Keep in mind Armies don't heal normally with a Barracks.

Put an end to popups!

It'd be funny if the two fortified swords took out their army :P I don't know how likely that is though, chances are they'd just kill one take heavy damage, then go back to the city to heal before coming for the 2nd.

Pillage, and return back to the boats. From the boats we can threaten them along the coastline.

And what happen to the names on the catapults?

Why have I not heard anyone say attack the GCA city Dun na Anarchy with jagjef or Flash? I'll bet $100.00 that GCA only has that one Reg Spear there. We could take and raze the city with one unit, possibly, and cut the Iron with the other. That would severly cripple GCA.

Dang, I wish I had thought of this previously, as I would have asked CFC to investigate that city. Yes GAC could move units after the investigation, but it looks as if only Horsemen would be able to get there.

I say we attack with the Vet Sword hoping to raze the city. Regardless of wheter he wins, loses, razes it; we use the Reg Sword to cut the Iron.

First we need to find out whether GCA will attack our swordsmen on the mountain. If only one is left it's a moot point anyway.

I think Trip's original plan was to use them more as a distraction then a true attack. Make them use their horsemen and swordsmen to try to dislodge us, meanwhile our main army moves farther into their territory. I can't deny that razing that city would provide even more distraction though.

I am with Dom, This turn, we should Raze and Fortify. Next turn, If we so wish, we can try to take Anarchy, but with both units.

If we do deside to take it, we should try to keep it and not raze it. Razing it will then later require it having to be rebuilt, which costs time, sheilds and pop to do that.

GCA's Army will be too involved with our main force to send an appreciable force to that city to try to retake it.

Here is my timeline of events that we should try to do:
This turn (turn 122)- Raze the Iron and fortify all.
turn 123 - attack and take Anarchy. Start building walls.
turn 124 - 1 sheild of production towards walls. Rush Walls for 76 Gold.
Turn 125 - Walls built and we are set in that city.

By that time, We will also have taken atleast 1 other city in the north, and CFC's unit movements towards Soda will leave them without enough to try to retake that city.

So, with likely alterations and clarifications to above orders, we have:

  • jagjef pillages road on GCA's Iron, Flash fortifies
  • PoA starts on her journey East around the unknown part of GWT
  • Two MIs and Two Horses as builds in the cities building units at this time. The proportions will be revised as soon as these units are done, as they will be continually

To be decided/done for near future turns:
  • Whether to attack Anarchy with jagjef and Flash or just fortify both on the Iron
  • Get a treaty with GWT where the PoA can pass safely through (perhaps the same non-sea border treaty as with CGN?)
  • What we should maintain our army make-up as
  • How and when to get our GA with GCA possibly retreating, not attacking and pillaging/razing.

Are there any plans to send a settler W of the ruins of Elucidium to take advantage of the raze and build one by the shores of the river on the square next to the fish?

That is the first that specific idea has been brought up, but sounds good. We of course will need settlers first, and only time will tell when we are starting on them...

Both Nevermore and Cuido will be disbanding soon and reloacting to somewhere midway between them as a possible FP/Palace city.

In a way, it’s good that Elucidium was abandoned because it was in a silly place. Why would you start one square away from a river when you could be next to the river? Let’s hope New Elucidium will grow bigger than the old (although more corrupt, alas).

The abandonment reminds me of nothing more than a big sulk.

By the way, do the ruins ever “wear down”? That would be a good modification to have: the older the ruins get, the lower the pile of rubble gets, until they’re gone. Or maybe they turn into a hill. They should disappear faster if they are next to a city as the citizens steal building materials from them.

Small change to note:

Numidean Master is gone!

GCA must have used a Horsemen to kill him! Sounds very fishy to me. GCA had a Sword in Rye, yet chosse to use a Horsemen instead?

I think we need more Horsemen to counter GCA with. We need to keep them from attacking us. With them having Horsemen, they will keep attacking from affar. If we have more horsemen, then we can keep them from getting "lucky" with the RNG by us attacking them and not the other way around.

As discussed in chat, I strongly agree with this. Both because it's generally wise to have more horsemen for mobility and overing our flanks and because we suspect that GCA may be replaying their saves to achieve optimal results with hit-and-run horsemen attacks. If so, denying them the opportunity to make attacks on our forces is even more prudent than it would normally be.

Very recently I attacked an unfortified horse with a veteran MI and I lost!!! It is true that the horse was on a mountain, but even so ...

The civ3 combat system is very weird so let's just assume for now that they had luck. Maybe they had more horses, and after the first one hurt the NM it retreated to let the second one finish the job. Very unlikely to happen, but it isn't impossible. stupid idea

Btw, they also pillaged two roads: SE and SE-E from Rye.

If that were the case, another NM would have moved up the line to fight the next horse.

Very odd results for their attack(s)in this war so far. Why would you risk a precious horse unit if you were just beating a hasty retreat? Its far more valuable furthe down the road than to weed out one NM, especially if it were to lose.

I would never do this attack. Very suspicious, IMHO. Or a combination of poor tactics and good/great luck.

Just for the record: the chances for such a thing to happen were 17%. Not as bad as I'd have thought it. (oddly enough, the chances for my MI losing against that horse were also 17%)

So it isn't impossible. What is definitely suspicious is that they've tried it in the first place. Besides, why did they try it with the horse but not with the sword?

I'm not quite sure I understand this reasoning. Our Horsemen cannot do squat about their Horsemen, unless we plan to leave our Horsemen out in the open, open for counter-attacks. Their own Horsemen will probably not be left our in the open either: as we approach their cities, they can just do hit and run tactics, ending their Horsemen movement inside cities.

The best counter we have to their pesky Horsemen is Mercs. Our odds of winning with those (especially if Catapults are in the stack) are good, and it allows us to keep our stacks together.

We must expect and plan for some attrition as we march through their lands. Horsemen is not the solution to this.
