Bush Unveils Measures to Weaken Cuba's Castro Full PM-box? Change here!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) vowed on Friday to try to weaken Cuban leader Fidel Castro (news - web sites)'s power, and said the United States would crack down on travel to the country and make it easier for dissidents to flee.

"Clearly, the Castro regime will not change by its own choice," Bush told a gathering at the White House Rose Garden. "But Cuba must change."

Bush unveiled the initiatives as he gears up for next year's presidential race. Florida is home to many Cuban Americans who advocate tougher measures against the Castro government. Anti-Castro Cuban Americans helped hand Bush a disputed but pivotal victory in Florida in 2000 and the state could once again prove key in the 2004 election.

In May 2002, Bush said he would be willing to ease American sanctions on the communist-run country if the government took steps toward democracy such as offering "free and fair elections" and if it worked toward opening its economy to free-market changes.

"The dictator has responded with defiance and contempt and a new round of brutal oppression," Bush said.

Some business groups, Democratic lawmakers and free-trade Republicans favor loosening up sanctions such as the travel ban, saying they have been ineffective and are costing American firms potential sources of profit.

But Bush said money paid by American tourists who stay in hotels in Cuba goes to the government, with local workers paid only "a pittance."

More BS from Bush. "Free and Fair Elections" is Newspeak for "Let Cuba be run by and for American Business like it used to be".

Just Now!

San Jose (Japher's Mind) - A major lobby to rouse Bush on Cuban interests was said to have been conducted by an internet and video game junky going by the name SlowwHand. The motives of this lobbiest is to increase the power of Texas and poke fun at an online pal commonly refered to as Che, as well as spam the popular Civilaztion gaming site; Apolyton.

"Sloww[Hand] is a jackass," an unknown poster explained. "He's a nice guy an all, but he is also an all-round conservative jackass."

Castro will still be around after Bush, and maybe then we can finally have a sane policy towards Cuba.

my policy towards cuba would be to let any cuban that gets outside cuba's waters and is found by us(or gets to american shores). asylum. I'll take the whole country if need be. leave castro sitting on a beach by himself commanding a palm tree.

That ain't a concern with China, and it was never a concern with El Salvador, Haiti, or lots of other countries, why pretend it's an issue with Cuba?

Fidel's a murdering *******, but he does have an endearing sense of style, and anyone who's spent 45 years 100 miles from the US, with both middle fingers raised, yelling "Se come mierda!" can't be all bad.

Well, sounds like a fly on an elephants arse to me. I would rather wait for the pesky little thing to go away then stir any waters. Yet, you shouldn't piss-off your neighbor if you don't want him to crap on your lawn...

Michael, you jackass.
It's Cuban's in Miami that are so hot to oust Castro.
How many truckboats are headed Cuba's direction?
Do you see Che breaking his hump to get there?

Something's better than nothing when you can't have everything. Castro is far better that what came before and very likely far better than what will come after. Compared with Purto Rico, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, Cuba is quite nice. But of course, no one talks about those shitty countries because they're capitalist.

Hell, Jamaica's so poor you can't even leave the tourist areas or you'll be kidnapped, robbed, raped (if a woman) and killed. And Haiti, ****, Haiti's a basket case. There are almost as many Haitans in the U.S. as Cubans. Where's the great handwringing concern about Haiti? Unlike the claims about Cuba, there is actual documented proof of the Domincan Republic using (Hatian) slave labor on its plantations.

But you don't wat to hear all that becuase it would mess with your nice little ideology.

A hypothetical question for you all.

Castro announces Cuba will hold free elections. Everyone can vote and anyone can run. A spirited debate starts, and parties are formed. UN inspectors are invited in--the polls are passed by them, the voters can pick any candidate without threat or coercion.

How many of you would actually believe it? Or would you just pass it off as a show without real substance of freedom?

Thanks Tex

What's wrong with just waiting for the old man to finally croak? Isn't that what we've been doing for 30 years now anyways?
