WMP9 uses 8.5MB of RAM and 2% CPU playing the same song.

it still feels heavy, whether it is or not. response time for minimization is slower, it eats up more processor time with the visualizations, i hate the "media library" (i'll organize my music my own, long, damn way, thank you), the default skin is clunky...
give me the spartan winamp2 anyday.
i'll give winamp5 a shot, though...

Are you confusing locking the taskbar with auto-hide?

There's no point to using the taskbar unlocked unless you constantly move its position around on the screen, unlocked uses up more screen realestate (enough for two tray icons or so) just to display the little bumpy-circle things to tell you it's unlocked. When you have the bar in a position you like, you simply lock it and get more space back.

Asher is way too biased for my tastes. He's always critical of anything that is NOT Wintel or Wintel related in the tech world. That's why I will continue to keep him on ignore.

I say no more and read no more.

There'll never be a Winamp4. They are working Winamp5 right now (based on the 2+3=5 logic that makes sense to Nullsoft and me). Winamp3 is excellent for my purposes and, yes, I have tried WMP and foobar2000.

Do people actually like visualizations and all that other cra... er ... stuff (like faux equalizers and useless waveform monitors)? I find that cra... er ... stuff to be incredibly annoying. I like my music player minimized down to nothing but play, skip, stop and the name of the tune. I only need all the other controls when I'm setting up playlists and assigning equalization settings to files. When I don't need it, I don' t want to see it.

I wouldn't mind the visualizations so much(speaking of WMP9), if they weren't so poorly done.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I use iTunes at home and the visualizations just bug me.

Asher: I'm kind of surprised that you keep them on. They serve no purpose whatsoever and use otherwise useful clock cycles. What's the point in maximizing the amount of processing power you've got if you're just going to flush it away on cheesy light shows?

those visualizations good?

they're cheap knockoffs. the original, the ultimate, was geiss 4.23 for winamp2. it's now up to geiss 4.24 or something, and there's a geiss2, but the best one was geiss for winamp.

written in assembly, for god's sake.

Um - did you read the same review I did? They complained about slow UI performance and some radio stations that kept dropping out.

Otherwise it was a complimentary review.

I thought you were right when you said that itunes does what a lot of individual apps do on Windows. I prefer to have one app to do it all.

Doesn't matter much - if you have a Windows ipod it's a godsend - otherwise, it's just another jukebox.

Who said I keep them on?

I keep the simple waveform one on because it doesnt take hardly any CPU, it still sits at "0%".

I don't use the other visualizations whatsoever, most of the time my Winamp is in window shade mode with a playlist under it.

How does it do it all? The only thing it does in addition to a minimalist program like Winamp is built in CD burning. On the other hand, Winamp is a true media player and supports far more formats, and even a huge array of video files.

iTunes is "all in one" in that it's a bloaty jukebox program with a minibrowser and mediocre CD burning software.

windows also has quite a few do-it-all apps. musicmatch jukebox, wmp, for instance. i don't like either of them too much. actually, i hate musicmatch, and only use wmp for video and at work, where all of the comps i deploy have wmp, and not winamp, because they don't need winamp.

i mean, i realize because of ashers fundamentalist belief in windows, he doesn't come across as trustworth to you fundamentalist macheads... but sometimes he does have a point, even if he might be a bit rabid about it.

either way, give me the lightweight ones. i like the several independent programs, because instead of having one big program do a bunch of things in a sorta mediocre fashion, you've got several programs, each of which do their one thing extraordinary well.

Full PM-box? Change here!

as for winamp 5 beta 1:

looks like they took a few pages out of the now defunct sonique. (yes, there's *supposed* to be a sonique 2 team, but after lycos fired all the original developers early in that program, i have found the new team to be less than spectacular.) most reminiscent is the decending equalizer.
i don't like the new skin, and i'm saddened by the creation of "winamp pro". especially since they've turned it into an all-in-one program.
it's just as responsive as winamp2 when it's in the classic skin, just slightly less so in modern. far more responsive than winamp3. i like the built-in backwards plugin compatibility.

still, i'll use winamp5 like winamp2. in classic skin mode, with classic plugins.

Re: the music store I see a few problems with the various formats.

I predict that, of the current crop, only Apple's and Dell's will survive. The reason being that the Apple Store doesn't actually make that much money. Presumably the other stores are in much the same boat. But it appears that only Apple and Dell have the benefit of using it to push their audio players which are making (Apple at least) a huge wad of cash.

Anyway, some figures.

The itunes music store in the last weeks accounted for over 70% of online music sales, despite being available to less than 5% of the computer using public (and less than that, since Classic Mac OS users cannot use itunes 4). That leaves 30% for buymusic and the others. WTF have they been doing? Surely they should be selling more than that.

Moreover the ipod has a 31% market share of purchased mp3 players. That's quite respectable. It also accounts for over half the money spent on mp3 players (since it costs more).

Looks like the hardware people win this round.

This is Asher's thread, not yours, and I haven't read it and refuse to because I know it's full of more of the same bs I always get from Mr. Biased Troll (Asher).

I really wish he would stop doing that, you know. Ever since I've known him, Asher has done nothing but made a "bad guy" image for himself on Poly; he's always looking to pick a fight. Of course, the day he stops trolling will most likely be the day that, you guessed it, "Hell Freezes Over!" But maybe not; I'll just keep praying for him. Hopefully one these days he'll be willing make a truce and lighten up a lot.

The problem the Macheads have is you ignore what you don't want to hear, not that people have problems with it.

If you had more tact, and weren't looking to pick a fight, more people would listen to you, Asher. It's time for you to snap out of it. Please. I'm asking you nicely.

I'm sure you hear a lot of things from me and Agathon that you don't want to hear either. Now I don't know Agathon as well as I know you, but I do know that when I hear something from you that I don't want to hear, I always try to stay calm. You on the other hand go off like an atom bomb when you hear something from me and/or Agathon you don't want to hear!

I always try to stay calm in heated debates. You may have noticed I tend to ignore people when they blow up on these boards. That's for a reason; the reason is that heated debates never get anywhere so I figure it's a waste of my time.

My point: Let's try to be more civilized from now on, eh?
