The NYT and WP articles are quite murky. From one of our papers:

"US-Oberst Fredrick Rudesheim gab die Zahl der Toten mit 46 an, fügte aber hinzu, man habe die Leichen nicht gezählt. Es handle sich vielmehr um eine Schätzung auf Grundlage der Befragung von an dem Schusswechsel beteiligten Soldaten."
Rudeshaim says 46 dead, but nobody counted them, rather an estimate based on interviews with soldiers.
"US-Soldaten hätten keine einzige Leiche gesehen, sagte US-General Mark Kimmitt am Montag in Bagdad. Er vermute, dass die Gegner die Leichen in ihren Stützpunkt weggebracht hätten."
Kimmitt: Not a single body, the Iraqi fighters have taken them away to their hideouts. (sounds like some heavy bullshit)
Are those interviews on the wires or in the papers somewhere?

From John Burns in the New York Times, (yes, the Times) via Andrew Sullivan.
"Here is what you have yet to hear reported in the mainstream media. In the few weeks since Coalition forces began to launch major counter-insurgency attacks, beginning with Operation Iron Hammer, over 1100 Iraqi Guerrillas have been captured or killed. This represents one-fifth of the entire strength of the Ba’athist and Islamist forces in the country. These figures, presented to President Bush in a secret briefing during his Thanksgiving trip to Baghdad, do not include the forty-six terrorists killed in a battle on November 30th. In other words, the US armed forces are killing and capturing fifteen of the enemy for each loss of their own: and this figure is distorted by the high number of US personnel killed in aircraft shoot-downs in November, a figure which is not likely to be repeated. In individual combat, the results look more and more like those of the last Sunday in November: forty-six of the enemy killed and eight captured with no losses among our forces. At the present rate, the entire force possessed by the enemy will be destroyed, and the country pacified, in a matter of months."
Like Sully, I find this incredibly optimistic. Wonder where he got the figure of 1100 from. The figure of 5000 insurgents is from Centcom, I suppose some would dispute that as well.

You can hate it and despise it, but as long as political leaders and their followers on any one side persist, the profession of soldiering will still exist. Once you're in, clear victory or clear defeat are the only unilateral ways out, because any form of peace requires the acceptance and adherence of all sides.
Until then, you have to deal with the people who keep attacking, and you may as well deal with it professionally, decisively and well, else you end up with FUBARs like the Iran-Iraq war or the Somme.

Now, does anyone find this somewhat similar to some of the quotes about Vietnam coming from the military and government in, I dunno, the 1962-64 range?
