Watching the video, it appears that the cops primarily struck him on the back and arms, but it's not possible to see where they struck him when he was on the ground.

And this also brings up another 'angle" to relect on:
I have been involved with a lot of fights in my life. I was abused growing up, had my teeth kicked out of my head @ 13 years old as well as ribs broken up. I have been held down beaten by brass knuckles and rings, pool cues broken over my head from years of bouncing in strip clubs and biker bars from Maine to North carolina and Florida. I have been in numerous fights as a police officer.
My point to ponder is this:
In an affray, just how easy do people think it is for a person to actually aim and strike someone "legally" all the time?
If you have a PR-24 (Tonfa Martial Arts Weapon) which is a nightstick with a handle on it, and swing and hit someone, it isnt like it hits someone and stops, it sometimes will deflect and maybe even deflect into a "lethal" area, for real, try to go hit a tree with one nd watch yourself it dont smack you on rebound!!
So you try to subdue somoen whom doesnt want to go down and they are moving and swaying and a moving target is not a punching dummie, its dynamic, and ever changing, whats someone supposed to do then?
Ok, say your an average police officer, in good shape but you are not an "expert" fighter, and because of sensitivity training and state,local and departmental constraints, you really dont want to hit someone too hard, and the guy your trying to subdue is a hardened criminal or simpky @o@k Strong, and he is baiting you or simply can take one helluva @r$e whooping, what should you do?
Oh and remember you may be on candid camera and all the while he has a mean streak and its you or him?
Exactly what should you do?
Not every department has 10 officers to back you up. Suppose you are alone and corner this person and he turns on you like a wild animal?
Not as easy as waking up to the morning news and seeing a cop beating the heck out of "Mr Innocent Citizen" when in fact that so-called-innocent citizen may have been wailing on you before and after the picture was taken!
Just some thoughts to ponder is all

I am a former Federal Police Officer, both USAMP (U S Army Military Police) as well as BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs). The Federal Govt. had to put Caucasian Officers on the Indian Reservation, because of the three families, the previous force wouldnt arrest a member of its family and would side with them against a complainant from another family. While I had many arrests, the majority, including 99% of my Felony arrests were of Native American decent. I had to not only answer to the Chief of Police, but also the Tribal Council (made up of 10 American Native Indians from the reservation),U S Federal Court Prosectors, local States District Attorney and F B I. So I "appear" rascist because of the limited number of caucasian arrests, (I also worked Public Safety so my Traffic Record was more evenly spread.)
This was aboard an Indian Reservation, Federally Funded, Federally run.
Now, lets take a white cop put into a predominantly Hispanic or African American precinct. Or maybe the 'Hood or barrio has a high crime rate. Now, The white cops come under much more scrutiny than others because of the "appearance" that they must have done something wrong, for without any video to prove innocent they HAVE to be guilty!
I love the onboard video camera but that doesnt cover all calls.
I know, many officers, white included are predjudice or rascist but not ALL are. I wasnt. I was a Federal Officer, Sworn to uphold the Law.
Some folks do the job to the best of their abilities. The Indians on the reservation would call to have an officer to be a referee, not unlike what goes on now. BUT when the officer has to protect himself, and their happens to be many their to try to stop him, then he may well be put into a bad situation whereas the crowds single him out as being predjudice.
My son is a deputy sherriff and a member of our local SWAT Team. I have allways given him this advice:
Do your job. But remember this:
It is better to be judged by a group of 12 then to be carried by a group of 6!

The officers certainly had to use physical force to get this violent guy under control, but he did not "deserve" being killed.

I saw the video. First of all that guy had his 400 pounds all around his belly and none around his chest, so he wasn't much of an opponent, meaning he couldn't hurt anybody, he was just hard to tackle. Then the fighting all showed up that he was scared to the death and was trying to break loose, while the cops were trying to put him down by beting him with their sticks. They were unable to understand that this man was acting more or less as a wild animal, which has to be tamed ratheir than maimed. They were blinded by the chickenshit cop mentality that says it's better to gang up and hit with the safety of your stick rather than risk getting bruised trying to tackle an unarmed man with your bare hands.
These cops should be convicted, simply because that man was never a real threat to them, but nevertheless they tried to smite him.
And yes of course they didn't want to kill him, but their malice is evident, when they are two, hitting a man who is down.
Just answer me this: I live someplace in the other side of the world, but, just a I was listening to the news and moments before I saw the video, I was betting my morning coffee that the guy was black. I was right. How can you explain this, land of the free?

Show me anyplace where I gave an excuse for the cops. The fact remains that, when I first heard the story I knew he was going to be black.
And to use the opposite theory, just because he is black doesn't mean this is racially motivated. Some people are criminals, but I, at least, will wait to condemn one side or the other.
Unlike you, who has already condemned the police.
