Haliburton would be one of the major benificiaries of a manned mission to Mars. Go figure.

I'll respond to this, though, since you've made it oh-so-very convenient.

Do we want to go for a domination victory or a spaceship victory? Obviously, cultural and diplomatic are out of the question.

Every generation has its share of Luddites, who are poven by history time and again to do nothing but stand in the way of greater prosperity for the average person in the long run.

I just don't understand the ones who aren't actually threatened by the progress in question.

Well it is said that Alan Shepard hit three golf balls while playing the course on the Moon. He never found the balls.

They must have gone into the ruff -- on Earth.

You can hit a golf ball at 1.68 km/s (velocity of circular orbit at lunar surface)?

In actuality, the golf balls would travel ~10 times as far as on earth, assuming equal swings. Factor of 6 from 1.63 m/s/s acceleration as opposed to 9.81 m/s/s
and adding an additional 50% for aerodynamic drag.

benefit from curved surface of moon would be insignificant at that distance. would add possiblyan additional 20-30 yards (based on a couple of rough estimates of angle of stroke)

Not even a high-powered rifle bullet has sufficient muzzle velocity to go into lunar orbit.

Almost, though.

One of the most interesting aspects of the "plan" is that NASA seems to want to launch missions to Mars from the Moon.

Sh!t, this is one of the times when I wish I was wrong. I predicted that Bush would screw Nasa, and dammit I was right.

Bush says "I wanna go to Mars and the Moon" and what does he do: promises to throw a billion dollars to Nasa (promises, promises), cuts the shuttle program and tells Nasa to re-organise its budget.

A billion dollars won't take the US to the moon, let alone mars.

Dammit.

Now you all know that I'm pretty critical of the US, but I got to give them credit for doing a great job with the Mars mission. This is something the Americans can be really proud of.

You won't hear this very often from me, but way to go USA. Go USA Go.

One of the more interesting aspects of the plan is the part where they mention the moon has large amounts of hydrogen3 that could be used "for power generation". Did someone finally get fusion working and forget to announce it?

Perhaps the real intention is mine it, bring it back to earth, and use for nuclear weapons production?

But I'm no physicist.

Huh? Where did you get this? I recall the president saying that it might be possible to manufacture rocket fuel on the moon. Is this part of that? H3 could be used as fuel for nuclear rockets.

Suffering from ads?

Not hydrogen 3, helium 3. a deuterium/He3 mix is supposed to be an easier fuel to use than the deuterium/tritium mix.

Newspaper I read at lunch yesterday, so no link unfortunately.
I stand corrected, but my point still stands - they haven't got fusion working yet.
