Btw, I didn't say that the teller of the joke was racist. I've said that the joke is racist, since it's based on racial stereotypes. Can one be offended by this? certainly!

Btw, It's only in arts classes that one can even comprehend a situation in which a student would tell any joke.

People of color in general. The joke is racist in that it plays on certain sterotypes. The phrase "bouga bouga" is a characture of African language. The joke is not racist, however, in that the purpose of the joke is not to degrade or poke fun at people from other races. So it's low on the ladder sins.

It was clearly inappropriate for the class, regardless of whether or not the TA overreacted.

Ves: to somebody that is oversensitive, that would seem racist... even though your intent wasn't racist, intent generally can't be conveyed...

It's all about the time and place Ves... and the context... the middle of a college class, where there are lots of people you don't know (who might be sensitive about racism) isn't exactly the right setting to be telling those kinds of jokes.
