Jesus was a real person, but I think the supernatural stuff was made up by a few of his followers, especially St. Peter. I read in a newsweek article about women in the Bible that the story about Mary Magdelene being a prostitute is false, that story was invented By Peter, who hated Mary Magdelene's close relationship with Jesus (she was his closest friend). This, unfortunatly, caused the male-chauvinism of Christianity.

Odin, you may be right. There is a pattern of labelling all great women of the ancient world who have political enemies as prostitutes. (Cleopatra, Messilina, Theodora, Mary Magdalene, for example) This pattern is so consistent as to immediately give one pause when a great or famous woman in the ancient world has been labelled as such by the ancients.

Not a ton of reviews so far. The tomato meter is hovering just below fresh at 58% Cream of the crop however, paints a worse picture at 38%

Passion, by all accounts, isn't high quality film making... but then, it IS a Gibson film.

Well, based on the reviews, the movie should be a bust. Now, let's check the box office numbers. Hmmm.....

According to Rush Limbaugh, CBS is facing a firestorm of protest concerning Andy Rooney, both for his trashing of the movie and of Mel on 60 Minutes and for his hateful remarks on Imus. He reports that the protests are far greater than anything they have received heretofore.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

The movie had a huge number of pre-sold tickets. Mel Gibson spent millions in screener promotions to convince churches to promote the film, which has led many of those churches (and other individuals) to prebuy first week tickets, since they see the film as an evangelical tool.

Free tickets to something that there has been controversy over means that theatres were pretty full, but theres no indication as to how many viewers will come back... after all, these churches can't afford to keep doing this. I give Passion a couple of weeks at number 1. Hidalgo and Starsky & Hutch are out the next week, and should do OK, but I still think that Passion should be number 1, then too.

S & H is surprisingly not crap, and Stiller and Wilson are both crowd pleasers- look at Along Came Polly... Stiller was the star vehicle for that. As for Hidalgo, its too soon to tell... Viggo hasn't been in a movie since LOTR's and we don't know how many fans he has. My wife for one, is going, no question, and LOTR is getting plenty of press and will win the Oscar on Sunday, so that will give both Viggo, and ROTK a bounce... and ROTK is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

The week after, though, you have a big release which will absolutely do big numbers, and is almost a lock to take the top spot... Secret Window.

Buzz will have died out by that point, and people will start listening to what other people are saying about the film, rather than wanting to see the controversial new film or getting a free presold ticket.

Of course, the film might have massive legs, but I think the film is likely to be reasonably heavily frontloaded, with greater than 35% drops per weekend. Its still way too early to tell. Of course its going to do decent numbers, but this film isn't Titanic. I don't see it being the biggest film of the year.

Its tough doing massive numbers since DVDs became popular.

I haven't read all the review, but most are good.

Ebert and Reoper are the only reviews I care about. Sometimes they recommend films I know I wouldn't like, but that is only because I don't like the genre. Of the types of movies I do like to see, their thumbs up recommendations have never steered me wrong.

You do realize that not believing in God is atheism, too, Ned? It doesn't have to entail a positive assertion that there is no god, it is simply the absense of belief in God. Welcome to atheism.

And this is categorically wrong. Most atheists, whether of the positive or negative variety, aren't religion-bashers. You're simply practicing your own bigotry by assuming this to be the case based on a small vocal minority. Again, Mr. Double Standard, why don't you judge Christians by the standards set by Falwell and Co.?

Atheism is built on a lack of belief in God, period. I don't hate religion, nor do any od the atheists I know. They may hate the evils perpetrated in the name of religion by some people, but they hate evils perpetrated by anyone.

Tell, me Ned: What do the major religions in their official dogma say about atheism? Any kind words about it in Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, etc.? Once again, the Nedaverse sees fit to apply blatant double standards to satisfy its master's biased agenda.

Sure, although I never said the film wouldn't be profitable.

Profitable != quality cinema.

It also doesn't change the premise of the thread... That TPOTC is still rotten based on diverse group of film critics, a hundred reviews later, after it got enough to be rated It actually dropped 5% in fact.

to be fair though, I don't hate all religion or all religious people... my family is quite religious... especially the older generations. I hate religious thought processes that discourage critical thought and require blind, unwavering faith.

for example, I think Buddhism is a great religion... peace, meditation, enlightenment... all that crap is good.

Jon -
quote:
any suggestion of this in the Bible at all?

Yes, there is an episode where some of the disciples are griping about the "special" relationship between Mary and Jesus and someone chastises them. Then there is the problem with Jesus being a priest who doesn't marry...marriage was a requirement for priests to pass along the line. One more point, Jesus attended a wedding at Cana and changed water into wine when it is brought to his attention that the wine is running out. After tasting Jesus' wine a guest comments how the groom usually serves the good stuff first and when everyone is drunk, then produces a second batch of wine that is inferior, but that the order was reversed. Why was Jesus supplying wine in the first place? That's the groom's duty! The only logical conclusion is that Jesus was the groom...

Why would the early gospel authors hide or ignore a possible marriage between Mary and Jesus? Maybe they didn't, maybe their text was edited by Paul and his group. Maybe Paul considered it inappropriate for Jesus to be married, especially if Paul was going to turn Jesus into a divine being. Maybe the authors themselves didn't want Mary to have more attention or relevance... Or maybe Jesus never married, but that leaves us with these problems...

As for atheists "hating" religious folk. C'mon, look at what religious folk have done and are still doing to others in the name of their religion. If atheists had tortured and slaughtered millions of people over the past 30-40 centuries we'd see religious folk hating atheists. Hell, atheists finally gained some power in the 20th century and started slaughtering people too...

I could care less what Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson et al believe, but when they start using government to hypocritically force me to live my life in accordance with their beliefs then I object and I'm not even an atheist. Then these a-holes whine about religious bigotry when they are using violence against others? Think about it, these clowns want other people put in jail for exercising their freedom, including other religious folk who use "drugs" as part of their religions and then these same people complain how Christianity is illegal or oppressed in other countries? The stench of their hypocrisy would repel a starving vulture... and yet, the behavior condemned most often by Jesus was...ahem...hypocrisy...

Pulp Fiction and The Thin Red Line are less graphically gory than TPOTC.

Direct depictions of personal violence have far less screen time in those movies than in TPOTC, and further more, there is a significant story beyond the violence, in both cases.

TPOTC is more akin to a slasher or snuff film, if you want to compare it to something.

Villifying? All I've heard by reviewers it that the violence in this movie is too much, you know, getting to Texas Chainsaw Massacre levels (which wasn't showered with praise for its violence, btw).

Why would you believe what Newsweek says? Rather late into the story, eh?

I saw the movie, it blew me away.

I would disagree with Imran about the violence in the movie getting to Texas chainsaw massacre levels. Gibson accomplishes more through suspense, then through the actual violence. He cuts away from the scourging at numerous points, so you get the feeling that while the scourging is important, it is not the only thing going on.

Secondly, all this anti-semitism is just bull. Gibson has some of the Sanhedrin council members withdraw from the proceedings against Christ, and others complain as to how not all the Council members are there. Even the Jewish council members are not all tarred with the same brush.

And a Jew helps Christ carry his cross while the Roman guards beat him down. Some of the Romans are downright kind, while others are brutal, just as in real life.
