I just got back from seeing the Passion. I would describe the movie in one word: Love.

After one hour, I was saying to myself: get crucified and die already! die! die! die! It doesn't even come close to Zephireli's movie or, for that matter, Scorsese's.

I am sure, Nostromo, that you are not a Catholic. The movie was accuarate and faithful and, above all, realistic. There is no doubt that Gibson was trying to give us not only the story of Jesus, but the reality of his passion in crucifixion. I think he succeeded. I was enormously moved by this movie. It is an ultimate work of love.

I'm sure you have all heard by now the story that Andy Rooney said on the Imus show something to the effect that he did not want to go to see this movie because it would make him laugh and that Imus responded with his own laughter.

All I can say to the both of them is that this bigotry and hatred of Christianity has got to stop!

My point.

The Atheists cannot prove that God does not exist. Neither can they prove that Jesus did not exist.

Atheism is not about the search for truth.

Yes, because when one thinks of Andy Rooney and Imus we think bigotry of Christians.

One would think that people who will vote for Bush would not be the ones you'd want to rail against for being bigotted against Christianity.

Well of course it is... because Christians haven't proven that God does exist and that Jesus does exist.

In fact NO ONE can prove that God exists.

Well, it's accurate and faithful to the bible account. It doesn't mean, however, that it's historically accurate.

Yes, I think you have a point here. One of the interesting things in the movie is the hyperrealism. Like I said, it's extremely graphic. Even the crucification itself.
While it's interesting, it didn't move me. Blood and gore doesn't do it for me anymore. I still think Zephirelli's movie is infinitely superior. It moved me when I was a child and moves me now, even if I'm not a believer anymore. It's just a great story.

Isn't making massive generalizations about entire beliefs the very definition of bigotry? You're gulity as charged.

So one not believing in any religion means one must be a bigot? Wow, the irony of your own bigotry is profoundly amusing, an that sad kind of way.

My statement is not about agnostics. I am an agnostic. My statement is about atheists who affirm that there is no God, without evidence, and who fan the flames of hatred and bigotry against the religious.

By this logic, then you must believe, to be consistent, that religious folks who affirm there is a God, without evidence, are thereby fanning the flames of hatred and bigotry against the non-religious. Patently stupid reasoning.

It is not the belief or abscence of the belief that fans the flames of bigotry. It is statements you see from the like of Andy Rooney that he would laugh at the Passion; or from Che that people who are religious are mentally ill. There is a distinct difference between belief and hate.

Hey, what a surprise, you're changing your story again:

quote:
Imran, Atheism is about anti-religious bigotry.

That's a pretty clear condemnation of the entire belief on your part, and it's also a gross generalization that is itself bigoted. Don't think we're dumb enough to not catch you in these charades when they're on the same page.

And why is it fair to judge all Atheists by Rooney and che? Do you apply the same standard the Christians and judge them by Fred Phelps and Jerry Falwell?

There's a passage in the Gorgias where Socrates wins an argument by pointing out to his interlocutor that the interlocutor's position commits him to the shameful claim that taking it up the ass is good.

But all this is academic. Plato thinks that all sex is degrading. That's why the Symposium ranks it below friendship. It's essentially the way that animals participate in a form of immortality, but since we humans are immortal there is really no need for it.

I doubt bisexuality was the norm. From Symposium it is derived that:

_The Athenian population frowned on those who engage in homosexual acts.
_Sparta executed those found to engage in such acts.

Besides no matter the oustanding achievements, Greeks remain humans. And humans are homosexual in a below a 10% of the general population. So the whining in Symposium about how the Athenian population looked down on homosexuals and their executions in Sparta can be seen in this context as well.

Which wouldn't be different from any major religion, except perhaps Buddhism. I certainly haven't seen as much bigotry coming from atheists about religion as I've seen from religionists towards atheists. It's still acceptable to mock atheists, and seems to be a tolerated prejudice. I remember when a local group in Maryland where my parents live put up a billboard on the main highway there that said "Celebrate the Atheist Holiday - April Fools Day." I somehow think an atheist billboard with such a tone towards religion would be met with howls of indignation.

Dissident, I have actually seen the tape several times on various news channels. Almost any discussion of the Passion seems to include the Imus/Rooney tape.

As to the Bill O'Reilly radio show, no, I listen to Rush Limbaugh whenever I have a chance and the two of them are on at the same time.

One either believes in God, or gods, or one does not. Atheism goes one step further and declares that there is no God and that people who do believe in God are -- well you pick the word. Whenever word you pick, it is not a kind word.

It is very clear to me that atheism is built on hatred of religion. I have never seen anything or heard anything from an atheist that is inconsistent with this view.
