Empirical> capable of being verified or disproved by observation or experiment
I.E. It is repeatable.

You have to suspend disbelief to watch almost every movie. I don't see why the Passion should be held to a different standard. |
If you claim something is fiction rather than fact, then you don't have to look to suspend belief in the events.

Nice try. You won't bait me. I've been in enough of these threads to know how going down that path turns out for both sides. |
Sure... so don't go posting messages inferring something is factual, when its mere opinion.
"I think jesus is the son of god therefore its reasonable he gets up" is acceptable
"jesus is the son of god therefore its reasonable he gets up" isn't acceptable... since you're not making it clear its mere opinion... and you're just begging for an argument.

I think the physical suffereing was played up because it had to compete with movies already out there (a lot of bruce willis ones for example)
therefore it had to go extreme to have the same impact

Everything that you believe is true, has it been verified to you empirically? Have you observed the action taking place? |
Yes... everything that I believe is true has been verified to me empirically.

I might if I was bored and had nothing better to do than bait Christians.

If you aren't prepared to accept a movie for what it is (in this case a religious picture), then why even bother talking about it? |
Because its not billed as just a religious picture... its billed as a "historical" religious picture.

I'm aware that there is a concept defined as a continent... I've perceived continents, from a height. I'm aware of books, with maps, and have seen maps with continents labelled. One of those continents was called Antarctica. I'm aware of the concept of magnetism. I've perceived experiments repeating other magnetic behaviors. I'm aware of the concept of the earths magnetic field, and that one of the fundamental concepts of that is that there is a central magnetic axis. I'm aware of a marking on the map defining that pole, which coincides where magnets point.
So... no... I don't believe in the south pole. I'm aware of it, and its surrounding concepts.

No Drake. While I know it's your standard maneuver to try and put your own spin on people's explanations for their beliefs/actions to suit your particular notions, let me spell it out for you: I don't have any problem suspending such disbelief for a film that's about a story, such as The Last Temptation of Christ, The Greatest Story Ever Told, or even Jesus Christ Superstar. However, when the entire purpose, as stated by the director, is to send a religious message that Jesus died because YOU there in the audience are a sinner, then you've reached the limits of my interest. Suspending my disbelief has to be because of a compelling interest. Nothing about this film, so far as I've seen, has inspired such interest in me. I've read the book, didn't find it interesting, so why should I see the movie version? Two hours of watching something that doesn't interest me is two hours wasted.
quote: I would take issue with your description of the movie as "only for believers", however. I'm not a believer. I would really like to see this movie, however, as do many of my non-believing friends. I think I can suspend my disbelief and accept the simple premise of the film in order to be able to understand what Gibson is trying to say. If you can't do that, fine, but don't try to paint all non-believers as being so narrow-minded. |
It wasn't my description of the film, Drake. As I clearly stated--twice--it was the description of my colleagues who had seen the movie, at least one of which IS a believer, that I know of. Notice how I also explicitely stated that I hadn't seen the film and couldn't be sure? But you haven't seen it either, so I'm amused you're taking issue with something that may or may not be accurate!
I'm still not so sure why it's so wrong of me not to be interested in seeing this movie...

Quantuum Fields always existed. Someones awareness of their properties isn't relevent to whether they exist in one.
