Ok, cool. So tell me how this sounds:
Fair citizens of CDG,
We at Apolyton do agree to your Non- Agression Pact. However, to show our good faith, we propose that the pact last for twenty turns instead of 10.

leave this as is
quote:
We have decided that cooperation with CDG is in our (and your) best interests.

leave out the (and your) part. We DON'T want to appear like we are telling them what is best for them, although we DO know that....

Along that line, we propose that we modify our tech plans in such a way as to trade in the future. We plan on working on Philosophy.

Tell them, "We are doing this, because we feel that it would be advantagious to both of us, if we go for Philosophy. Our Economic advisors beleave that this is the best route for both of our Nations" Or something like that....

(I don't really know what to write here. Can someone think of something to convince them to not complain about us researching philosophy?)
Other than that, We wish you the best of luck with what the gods give you.

Rest sounds good to me

Final Draft. I'll wait a few hours for some critiques. If you guys are happy with my style, then I'll skip the approval stage for the next communiques.
Fair citizens of the Creative Design Group,
We at Apolyton do agree to your Non- Agression Pact. However, to show our good faith, we propose that the pact last for twenty turns instead of 10. We have decided that cooperation with CDG is in our best interests. Along that line, we propose that we modify our tech plans in such a way as to trade in the future. We plan on working on Philosophy. We are doing this, because we feel that it would be advantagious to both of us if we go for Philosophy. Our Economic advisors believe that this is the best route for both of our Nations. As the only "Scientific" civ in the Group (and the game for that matter), we stand a much better chance of generating a Scientific Great Leader, and it is in our Groups' best interest that the best chances are put forth.
Other than that, We wish you the best of luck with what the gods give you.
Regards,
Vander, Ambassador of Apolyton

Oops. Just a little too late. It all sounds a bit preachy, with 'we say this' and 'we decide that'. Trust me, I know it's hard to do otherwise when writing an official letter like this.
For next time here are my ideas on how we could have rewritten this to be a little less rigid perhaps.
Fair citizens of the Creative Design Group,
We were delighted at your offer of a NAP, and so we eagerly accept. Furthermore, in an act of good faith, we propose that the pact last for twenty turns instead of 10. Cooperation between Apolyton and CDG is in all our best interests.
The rest as is.
Perhaps I'm the only one in this, but I would like to inject a little more 'emotion' perhaps into our messages, so that we seem more like friends rather than aloof diplomats. |
MWIA - I beg to differ.
"Delighted" sounds a bit too pleased; the word is somewhat padded.
"Eagerly" sounds almost suspicious. Are we trying to sound overly keen, or are we hiding something?
And as a point of grammar "in all our best interests" should read "in both our best interests". (sorry - my mother taught English. )
Vander's note may have sounded a bit cool, but that is OK. There was nothing unfriendly about it. And I would not suggest he change his style now. That may create confusion in the communications and how they are received.
Everyone has a different communications style. Overly warm is sometimes not the right tone either. I think it was OK.
And after all - we are the Greeks, so we can sound a bit 'preachy'.
(MWIA... Sorry if this sounded defensive, but I do think it hit the right tone.)

We at Apolyton had an idea. This idea, if properly implimented, will give our two teams a needed boost to our tech rates (This is doubly important given the Ladderites's performance!). If we follow this path that the Gods have given us, both our teams shall get Republic. With the citizens behind the leaders of our nations, our economies and production capabilites should be vastly improved over that of our opponents.
For this to work, the Gods have given us this system:
- CDG finishes Writing, gifts to Poly
- CDG starts on Code of Laws, tells Poly how long it will take
- Poly finishes Iron Working, gifts to CDG along with Pottery
- Poly researches a cheaper tech (Wheel, Masonry, etc...) to kill time if needed. Otherwise, Poly starts Philosophy
- CDG finishes CoL, gifts to Poly
- Poly finishes Philosophy, gets Republic as free tech, gifts both to CDG
Techs given to CDG = IW, Pottery, Philosophy, Republic
Techs given to Poly = Writing, CoL
All techs are to be GIFTED so as to not cause unnecessary delay.
Any extra techs we research are not gifted (this is negotiable)
Tell us what you think.
How's this for a tech trade deal?
