to put a cat among the pigeons, I played some CTP2 last night and came to the conclusion that the current main game screen mode is perfect, so i wouldn't want that to change much - the large view of the game world helps take you into the game, so i wouldnt like to just have the screen as above, all the boxes would make it a little claustophobic i think?

Still if we can put many of the other game screens into the one, then that would help the confusion that newbies oftne complain about ( cough......this whole discusion has been for that one information screen right, not just one screen to play the whole game on? - i think ive been thinking the later )

CoT the discussion is about the F2 City Manager screen, not the main area.

Might be me, but I actually prefer to see the text instead of a tiny little picture. In C-evo they only use pictures and it is hard to see, what you already have

It is far from perfect as far as I am concerned, seeing the city without the terrain around does not help to identify the city concerned when you have something like 40 of them.

I'm all ears, suggest how we can add to this map area this without losing anything from the other sections.

There may be a some space that can be squeezed from the General area, but not much. I'm going to ask for an "eyeball" button which will center the background game screen on the city. I've also mentioned a windowshade button which will reduce the city manager to just a title bar revealing the game screen underneath. Though I've heard no response if this is possible or wanted by the group.

I was replying to Maquiladora about the Civ2 city screen. The CtP2 city screen you posted this morning displays a well balanced terrain/city view One Present.

Ah but back in those days we were expected to put up with that kind of heavy micromanagement, now we can remedy that with a bigger overview. For what it needed to do, the civ2 city screen was pleasant. Im not saying we copy it, just look at the subtle shading around each area, so the player can distinguish it easily.

Does anyone have CTP1...
Could someone with CTP1 post the screens from there. It would be interesting to have a look at those too. I would do it, but I am leaving town for the weekend right after work.

There is also that "other" game...

Civ3 city screen is vastly superior to Civ2 city screen... but there is much less information to display than in CtP2.

I didn't remember the CtP1 city screen, to the exception of the map (too small to be of any use when you don't have to allocate workers), I find it pretty good.

In the morning I'm going to take a holiday for about a week. My hopes are to get started on tightening the design of a city manager screen after that break.

Keep the ideas flowing. Don't let the visual design become a stumbling block.

Put an end to popups!

As Tamerlin says, CTP1 had no city screen, it was all in the tabs at the bottom of the screen (except for the worker allocation popup).
