Jewish Group: Mormons Still Baptize Dead

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Researchers say that Mormons have continued to posthumously baptize Jewish Holocaust victims into their faith despite a promise to discontinue the practice.

"We are very hopeful that we will be able to convince the church to stop," Ernest Michel, chairman of the New York-based World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, said Friday. If not, Michel said, his group will consider other options, "possibly legal steps."

Church spokesman Dale Bills said in a statement Friday evening that church officials "do not know what may come of these discussions, but we welcome the involvement of any who seek to resolve amicably the concerns expressed by some of our Jewish friends."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long collected names from government documents and other records worldwide for posthumous baptisms. Church members stand in to be baptized in the names of the deceased non-Mormons, a ritual the church says is required for them to reach heaven.

The practice is primarily intended to give salvation to the ancestors of Mormons, but many others are included, since the church believes that individuals' ability to choose a religion continues beyond the grave. Non-Mormon faiths have objected to the baptisms.

"It's ridiculous for people to pretend they have the key to heaven," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "And even if they say they want to do somebody a favor ... it's not a symbol of love. It's a symbol of arrogance."

In 1995, the Mormon church acceded to demands by Jewish leaders that the denomination stop posthumously baptizing Jews. But Helen Radkey, a Salt Lake City researcher, said on Friday that the process still hasn't ended.

She said she has found posthumous baptism records for 268 Dutch Jews killed in Polish concentration camps, which she described as a "small sampling." All the death camp victims, incorrectly listed in the Mormon database as dying in "Auschwitz, Germany," were posthumously baptized well after the 1995 agreement.

Mormon leaders reaffirmed the 1995 pact in December 2002, after Radkey found at least 20,000 Jews in the church's International Genealogical Index. The church says proxy baptisms have been performed for nearly every one of the 400 million names in the database.

"The Jews have to either accept what the Mormons are doing or take legal action," Radkey said.

Michel's group asked Sen. Hillary Clinton to intervene in the matter and the New York Democrat met last month with Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican and LDS member, though neither side would comment on the session.

The church directed its members after the 1995 agreement to not include the names of unrelated persons, celebrities and non-approved groups, such as Jewish Holocaust victims, for the baptisms, according to documentation the Mormon church provided Friday to The Associated Press.

The church also assumes that the closest living relative of the deceased being offered for proxy baptism has consented.

The pact, however, "did not guarantee that no future vicarious baptisms for deceased Jews would occur," according to church documents.

In a Nov. 14, 2003, letter, church elder D. Todd Christofferson wrote Michel that the church did not agree to find and remove the names of all deceased Jews in its database of 400 million names. "That would be an impossible undertaking," Christofferson wrote.

I'd like to read your opinions about both, but the fundamental justification to the former would be especially interesting.

I (somewhat) understand the concerns and objections to what many would perceive as an action hostile to another's religion.

It is a belief held by the Church that certain steps are necessary to gain exaltation; among these are baptism. Thus, we do baptisms for the dead to provide the deceased with an opportunity to accept or reject the ordinance.

I don't see what rights these groups think they would have to stop the baptisms, nor fully see why it is cause for such outrage. If another religion was performing some ceremony or ordinance for any relative of mine, I wouldn't pursue such lengthy avenues as some of the above groups have done; in my opinion, they would lack the proper keys and power, and as such it would be lacking in authority, and therefore the ordinance would not be binding.

No, you essentially said that Mormons think you can only go to heaven if your baptised and that if another church baptised your dead relatives you wouldn't really care because you dont think its binding.

I said it may not be an issue about whether it is binding or not, and that Mormons are (yet again) forcing Mormonism on other people.

In performing baptisms for the dead? Absolutely. If you believe in the Church, it is a wonderful opportunity to provide loved ones with the chance to accept the Gospel. If you don't believe in the Church, then who cares what them Mormons are doing?

If Tassism required every dead person to be raped, would it be OK for me to dig up graves and rape dead people?

Extreme example, yes, but Mormons really don't have the right to be treating Jews as if they were Mormon.
Nor anyone else for that matter.

Well because its insulting.
These mormons are showing no respect for the Jewish faith or the Jewish people by treating them as if they were dedicated Mormons.

Would you participate in a religious rite that marked you as a member of that religion even if you didn't believe in that religion?
The Church would not look highly on that.

No, but you aren't treating the dead with respect. Thats my point: You should respect the dead. Unless they specifically said they wanted to become Mormon when they were dead, you should not be trying to baptize them.

It just makes Mormons look like the fringe-cult they are.

They aren't treating Jews as Mormons. Mormons aren't baptized.

You are Baptized to become Mormon.

The real travesty of Mormon baptism is when it's not done correctly, as in the whole body not going underwater.

Then the poor, scared of water, eight year old has to be dunked by their 70 year old grandfather twice.

Well. You know. It's nice, if you think of it as a Mormon. You're giving the dead, who never knew the right faith, a second chance.

But if you're not a Mormon, well, it looks like you're foisting religion on the dead.

It's offensive, sure, but I don't see anything really wrong with it. It's not as if they're digging up corpses and dunking them in water or anything. It's a ceremony that only involves the name of the individuals, not any of their personal effects. So it breaks down to this:

1) If the Mormons are right, then they person might get to go to Heaven, which is a good thing.

2) If the Jews are right, then the ceremony won't have any effect on the deceased's soul, so it does no harm.

3) If I'm right, then there's nothing going on after death for anybody, so no harm, no foul.

My question is, why are the Mormons only doing this for the Holocaust victims? Why not just start getting lists of all dead non-Mormons and devote themselves to constant baptism ceremonies of this kind? Seems to me that giving everyone a chance to get to heaven should trump all other concerns...

EDIT: read further, question answered, nm.

To improve this analogy, I would participate in the religious rite, then be asked to decide whether or not I wished to accept it and become a member of the religion.

The work is not done exclusively for Holocaust victims. It is carried out for all non-members, hence the efforts and emphasis placed on geneology.

JohnT: Yes, it is.

From what I see, this is just another example of Mormon extremetism. They see it as perfectly fine and right and while theres nothing "morally wrong" about it, its just not respectful at all....Mormons are trying to put a more moderate face on, and this doesn't quite help.
For me its painfully obvious why this would upset anyone who isn't faithful.
It's just like that guy over in Brigham City whos always reading from the book of mormon I'm fine with your religion as long as you don't try to forcefeed it to me.
