DS9 is basically the best Trek series ever - partially because they took a lot of the themes from B5.

I'm still a little unsure about "Enterprise" as it's pretty new here - we've only seen through season 1 - Get yer act together channel 9!

"Enterprise" has arrived in France a few weeks ago only but as I don't have nor Satellite nor Cable TV I won't see them until a Trekkie around me buys it (the series are very costly in France, at least 100 € each season)... which means in one or two years.

I must admit I have a soft spot for "The New Generation" (I am currently looking at the full serie) though I have been pleasantly surprised by DS9.

On the other hand I really like the idea behind "Voyager", the "Lost in Space" and "Into the Unknown" concepts mixed together appeal to me.

I have discussed with some fans (of B5 and DS9) and it seems to be a common misconception as the first seasons would have been produced roughly at the same time. It is thus difficult to know which serie has influenced the other... probably both.

TNG just didn't really take my fancy - something to do with putting families on board something that was supposed to be a warship I think. It wasn't too bad for it's time but looking back I don't think I'd ever really want to watch it again.

Voyager wasn't too bad but it had a bit too much of that 'new planet every week' feel at the start. There've been a few too many SF series like that. Season 4 (IIRC) introducing the war between the Borg and Species 8472 changed all that though.

I think B5 first aired a season in advance of DS9 but I'm not entirely sure when they were shot. The eventual DS9 main theme - the Dominion war - is only hinted at towards the end of season 2, after B5 season 1, a little after the secondary plotline - the usurpation of power on Bajor - is coming to light - Very similar to the way B5 handled the end of their 1st season.
Both excellent series in any case.

No. It happened two weeks ago. The Stormers' Corne Krige, ex-Bok skipper, copped 8 weeks for headbutting against the Chiefs. The next day, Sharks and Bok A.J. Venter copped 8 weeks for headbutting against the Reds. And I notice that the Crusaders' #8 copped 3 weeks for headbutting last weekend.

I take it the has-been was referring to VD?

The ‘special renewal price’ is a timebound price – renew the season ticket by 1st June and that is the price paid. Renew after and you pay the ‘standard’ price which is generally somewhat higher. It’s a screwed up attempt at a loyalty bonus perhaps?

quote:
One of the reasons their navy was trumped was that a lot of the officers had been guillotined a few years earlier

That, and the fact their CinC was only interested in land forces – and that they were facing an authentic naval warfare genius on the opposing side.

All that battle lacked was Russell Crowe – if we had had him we would have borded and taken all their ships. Have you seen Peter Weir’s strange M&C:FAOTW?

I thought that red card was a bit of an overreaction. The "head butt" was barely a nudge. A yellow card would have been sufficient IMO.

Here’s something you may not know – the yellow card is for Professional infringements only – it is never appropriate for violent foul play. Most refs, NH and SH, get this totally wrong.

When do you get stung to death by Wasps?

Wasp lost Dowd for the season when he got injured late in the bad tempered game with Glaws on Saturday. Good news for Tamerlin’s mob – terrible news for Wasps. Even at 34 he looked far better than anything we saw from the Mitchell front row in the RWC.

quote:
DS9 is basically the best Trek series ever - partially because they took a lot of the themes from B5.

Oh Finbar will hate this.

Yes DS9 was classy – never as good as B5 but it had decent writers never the less. Voyager sucked almost without exception – may 2-3 decent episodes in seven seasons (so I am amazed Ravagon liked it!). Enterprise had two pointless seasons – there are hints of worthiness in the third but it may be too late as it’s very much under threat of cancellation.

At what point did ST nose dive – when the Berman-Braga producer Axis took total control IMHO. Bury the franchise or change the leadership of it.

quote:
It is thus difficult to know which serie has influenced the other... probably both.

DS9 had no story arc at all until late in it’s second season as Ravagon said - when in introduced the Dominion in direct response to B5 winning audience share with it’s arc…

You sure about this? Last time I checked the laws, it was pretty much refs' discretion. But a yellow card could be part of the punishment for violent/foul play. It could be issued with a warning that a repeat offence will earn a red card. But, as I say, it was refs' discretion. I'll dig up a copy of the law and post it.

I suppose the fact they got 8 weeks instead of 3 makes up for them not receiving red cards during the game.

I just de-boned deux poussins for dinner tonight! Marinate them for four hours in oil, garlic, rosemary and thyme. Drain the marinade, put the poussins skin-side down in a hot pan with a bit of oil on top of the stove and immediately place a brick-wrapped-in-tin foil on top to keep the poussins flat against the pan's surface. As soon as the skin is crisp and brown, remove the bricks and put the pan in a hot oven till the poussins are cooked through. Serve with new potatoes roasted with rosemary and wilted spinach with garlic and pine nuts.

Kiwi's living in WA must grab every lifeline they can get and hold on for dear life.
I'm sure Italians living in Sydney know how that works.

I am most pleasantly surprised, however, to find our English friend to be a man of such exquisite taste.

Wrt ST:Voyager though, I haven't seen most of it - A smattering of the first few season's, most of whichever season opened with the Borg/8472 war, and just bit's'n'pieces thereafter - Australian TV was only showing an episode on irregular occasions.
If they went back to the 'new planet next week' theme I guess I didn't miss much.

To my extreme irritation however, they did the same thing to S7 of DS9.

That does make sense I guess.

It was an enjoyable film – but poorly marketed here as an action flick. It was more of a period piece character study with some action sequences.

Actually I believe you may be right – the ‘letter’ of the law allows to ref to resort to yellow for violent play in some circs – but it is opined often up here that this was not the ‘spirit’ in which the law was drafted. Yellow was never intended for punches was it? Are you sure the ref has discretion in the case of punches and head butts? I thought both were possibly named and proscribed? Never the less the yellow is an unclosed wriggle that allows weak refs to cop out of hard decisions?

We are familiar with the expression back in the mother country.

Having just read and taken on board that Ravagon hasn’t seen all of Voyager I must be careful what I spill. I nearly revealed how season seven ends as I was going to write an anti-Janeway opinion piece. For now lets just list my favourite captains is descending order:

Picard
Kirk
Sisko
Archer
Every guest star who ever wore four pips in any series
Mother Hen Janeway

God Janeway is an annoying character – a captain who cannot command!

Anyway back to rugger – Montferand stole Jones from under our noses. As a French side without salary caps they could easily do so. FFR now has England as well as Wales after it’s blood. Could French sides compete with us on a a level playing field I wonder.

Still one piece of good news – Toulouse have signed Gareth Thomas. This at least proves they don’t get everything right!

I'm told that's exactly what it was. Peter Weir doesn't make "action flicks". Presumably they were trying to cash in on Russell's "Gladiator" thing.

I went and checked the laws. It's the ref's option. Even for violent and/or dangerous play. A lot of the laws are incredibly clumsily written. It takes two or three reads to work out what they're saying.

But I think most refs red card the bad stuff. The Crusaders #8 was red carded for his head butt last weekend. If Krige and Venter had been spotted, they'd've gone too. I'm trying to find a version of the laws laid out in such a fashion to allow easy copy and paste.

Oh, and Plank was cleared of his charges after last weekend. Fair enough, too. He was elbowed in the head off the ball by the Highlanders lock. He chased the bloke and grabbed his jersey. The Highlanders lock started throwing punches. Plank retaliated with some punches. The Highlanders lock was red carded for the elbow, Plank was yellow carded for retaliation. Fair enough. Later, though, after the game, Plank was leaving the field. The Highlanders lock had showered and changed into civvies. He went Plank from behind as he was heading for the tunnel. Plank got the shock of his life, thinking someone from the crowd - the Highlanders lock was now in civvies - was going him. There were words, some pushing, then Plank headed on his way. Plank was charged with conduct unbecoming because of it. And cleared. The Highlanders lock was charged with a whole heap of things. He challenged the judiciary's right to act on "off-field" matters. So his charges are on hold until it's determined whether the judiciary does have the right. The man is a serious worry.

I noticed that. Still, you've now got Picard at full back.

Still one piece of good news – Toulouse have signed Gareth Thomas. This at least proves they don’t get everything right!

Yes, Mr has been very quiet about that one. I wonder whether Mr likes Leek Soup?

Yes, I have seen it! It's a very good cartoon.

I have learnt it here, I didn't knew the Stade Toulousain was running after him.

I must admit Jean-Luc Picard is also my favorite captain, but I still have a soft spot for Voyager because of the serie's theme.

I have just finished to watch the first season of The Next Generation and though it is not very good I know the best is yet to come as the characters are now almost fleshed out. I am sure the serie will become more and more interesting and I am waiting for Wesley Crucher's death and the Borgs with anticipation.
