This line of argument is as silly as saying the Republicans would rather have had Gore win in 2000, so they could continue to recruit heavily (of course that has no bearing on what Republicans want in 2003/4).

You are conflating different groups, and forgetting that wnat a group wants and what it says it wants can be two very different things.

If the U.S. leaves, then the Shi'ite militias will take control and establish a Shi'ite theocracy, ala Iran. AQ doesn't want that, they're Sunni and Whabbists. If the U.S. makes Iraq into a functional democracy and pulls out, that's a defeat for AQ, because it will pull the rug out from under their propaganda about the U.S. only there to steal the oil. But when the pictures of the abuse came out, they must have been secretly smiling inside, because they knew that millions of Muslims and Arabs were gonna freak out and want revenge.

Consider the fact that despite the fact that AQ, as an organization, is largely defeated. It leadership is mostly killed or on the run. They have no safe hiding places. And yet their ideology and methods are spreading. The occupation of Iraq infuriates people. It is litterally driving people insane with anger.

Again, you are assuming AQ is the same as al-Sadr or the Baathist. AQ's goals are not the same. The allter two want us out of Iraq. The former wants to control the entire Islamic world. They can't achieve their greater goal if they main recruiting tool ceases to exist.
