Who cares if he did or didn't do it? The thread read like a pathetic cry for attention and illicits no real pity or sadness from me.

An obituary was in the papers, as well as some other articles on it. He did it.

CFC had a thingy with a guy pretending to have a life-threatening injury when he didn't, though.

Awfully cynical today, aren't we DD?

I don't think his post reads like a call for attention at all. If you look at his thread, he doesn't say anything about suicide until the last line, and then he did it right away.

Goodbye threads of whatever ilk by definition are pathetic cries for attention. God even the place he did it in screams "LOOK AT ME!"

It doesn't read like a 'look at me'. His post sounds more like he was trying to relieve some of the guilt he was feeling by explaining how this was what he wants, what he thinks is best for him, and not something to fear (levity, smilies). The same things that were probably going through his head over and over to make his facing death possible.

You have to understand that to him, in his state of mind, it is perfectly valid justification for his actions. He was approaching it as if he were talking to himself, comforting himself, because that's what he understood. And that's how he tried to comfort his friends.

I can't blame him for where it happened, even though it's certainly not easy on the family. I've been in that situation, and it just never occured to me how it would affect my family. According to a post later in the thread, he was raised Mormon but didn't believe in it even though he respects the religion and it sounds like his family is Mormon. I know this was a major issue with me as there is a very real rift that forms because you are no longer included (self imposed exclusion because of your beliefs) in a large portion of your family's (and community's) lives. Add in the depression which makes that gulf larger, and his family might not have seemed as real as his online friends to him.

I feel sorry for his family and friends. The **** is always on someone, and he's passed it along now. It's not fair either way.

actually I said I was suidal above, but not really.

I've been on vacation. I'm never suicidal when I'm on vacation

maybe I need to change jobs.

what I hate about changing jobs, you go back to 0 weeks of vacation, and have to work your way up. Next year I finally get 3 weeks of vacation. I need my vacation. all work and no play make diss go...

this is one area I'm jealous of the europeans about. They get tons more vacation, and holidays.

boy that was way off topic.

just me being an attention whore I guess

I still think that may be a troll (the suicide thing). Although the obituary is pretty convincing.

The guy seems to have found a measure of companionship on the board he frequented.

Which I can readily understand.

The post he made saying goodby is curious. Because he lists so many rather small-seeming things while just referring in passing to the stuff which was pissing him off so much he had decided to commit suicide.

As the small stuff of shared gaming life still meant something to him you would have thought life still had things to offer him.

But I guess teenage angst does not work quite like that.

A pity it is not possible to take some of the balance that living just a few more years brings to us all and give it to teen-agers. Like a sort of innoculation.

Reading his post it is really hard not to think that if this guy could have got over the awkwardnesses of the next three or four years of his life he would have got just as much fun from the next twenty or thirty that I have.

Must be agonising for parents of such youngsters. To know that you might have found a way to help them grow through it but didn't would eat at you.

Suffering from ads?

Sad... That post he wrote could've been something I'd say (with the notable exception that I've never even contemplated suicide). I don't really think it was attention-seeking either, just saying goodbye to his friends, or something.

An example of a truly pathetic faked death can be found here:

There was another really time at another site where someone faked their death to get higher ratings for their art.

His family care. His friends care. Anyone not totally dried up to a husk by "Generation X" apathy, or saddled with weapons-grade misanthropy cares for them. So thanks for feeling you had an opinion to express and may I suggest sticking it up your arse rather than posting it next time?

Sorry but that's clearly marked as an exit not an entrance.

I also find it hard to give a damn about the fate of someone who cares so little about their own family (the only people who illicit any iota of sympathy from me in this affair).

I was never depressed as a teenager. I was full of hopes and dreams.

It was only until my 20's when all my hopes and dreams were crushed, that I became depressed

Great -- so are you saying that if some people lie about committing suicide because they want attention, that we should be recklessly indifferent at the risk of letting others who mean it, to kill themselves??
