it can also be about politics, inside the movie itself.
cannes are not oscars where very weak films albeit easily digestable are usually getting the price. in order for a film to be strong it needs to also have a poignant message/perspective and many times politics are that. it's not like it is about special effects.

and if im not mistaken cannes has a tradition of honouring critisizing movies, such as that belgian one about the failure of the social democrats in europe etc it's a different kind of awards in some respects.

I agree, but I think Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh are pretty healthy for politics in general. I'm not saying that people will gain great insight though their works, but it appears as though these guys speak a language that ordinary people understand and they convey the attitude that it does matter who's running the show from the White House. I wouldn't mind a couple of crazy radio show hosts in my country for that same reason as long as it didn't go totally overboard.
