All purpose Planescape:Torment thread Suffering from ads?

Just started playing PS:T.

Im enjoying it more than I did when i first installed it a few months ago. Either im more in "a good place" to deal with the ghoulishness, or coming back to it Im not surprised by it. And Morte is starting to grow on me. And I did manage to find my way out of the Mortuary, Sigil looks cool.

But I ended up in the
spoiler(highlight to read):
nasty neighborhood near the memorial
, and thus was pursued by
spoiler(highlight to read):
thugs
and ended up killed. The way the game handles that
spoiler(highlight to read):
with the PC being revived from the dead, is fascinating - its part of the plot - the PC cant really die - its an interface convenience - dont need to reload - and its a reference to the whole unrealistic aspect of the whole genre - "RPGs teach that when you die all you have to do is reload to live again
truely evidence that irony isnt dead.

Still I think I will restart, now that I know something.

No big hints, but would be interested in your thoughts about the beginning.

1. What base stats should I try? I went for wisdom, let Morte have the intell. And some charisma - should be important in a game with less combat, but are the dialogue choices truely limited otherwise? Not sure about str vs dex - havent seen any ranged weapons yet. Went for const, thats always good, i think
2. In my first go around I spoke to a dustie, and ended up having to fight or run after that. Is it possible by avoiding talking to the dusties, to avoid that? Is there any reason to talk to a dustie?
3. With the bracelet of healing (or whatever its called) i dont need to use bandages, etc on myself do I? Save all those for Morte?

Suffering from ads?

The bracelet is used up, sorry

Avoid talking to the "normal" Dusties in the Mortuary - remember, you're supposed to be dead. You can talk to most of the named ones safely though, and you should talk to all the zombies.

I suggest you get a decent INT WIS and CHA to start with, moderate/low STR, moderate/low DEX and moderate CON. Talking skills are VERY important in this game, and some checks require that you have INT, WIS or CHA of more than 21 Of course, with every level you gain, you increase 1 stat, so its easy to end the game with 25 in nearly everything, but early on, if you don't have the WIS, INT and CHA, you'll miss out on a lot of the game.

There are NO ranged weapons you can aquire, so don't plan on that.

Don't worry about healing too much. There's plenty of places you can rest. And if you do die... well...

Have fun, its a great game.

You mean the Dustman Embalming Charm? You can use it only 3 times. Or do you mean one of the other charms?

Sorry, I'm not quite clear what "bracelet of healing" you mean.

I'm not sure about NO ranged weapons.

There is a crossbow an NPC can use, but not really your PC.

So don't count on using ranged weapons. Just concentrate on blunt or edged. I think I used edged.

But I was a mage much of the game. So I casted spells. Dakkon' and Morte did much of the melee fighting.

I tried to start up my first game a few weeks ago but the resolution is awful. Is there any possible way to get it up from 640x480? I ended up clawing my eyes out after an hour or two. (Figuratively speaking, not in-game. Yes, I tried to remove my own eye in the inventory view.)

Yeah, the resolution stops being noticed after a few hours. Just like with BG1, FO and FO2 - the game is so good, and the graphics actually rather attractive, that you soon stop noticing.

Kassi - it gets better than pulling eyes out, don't you worry

Oh, it's not bad graphically at 640x480, not at all. Woe unto him who would suggest that I'd place graphics before the story, gameplay or atmosphere. It just saddens me to think how smoother the gameplay'd be with a larger part of an area on the screen at a time, and bigger text boxs (*clickety*read*clickety*read*clickety*).

There are no ranged weapons for your character, and Wisdom is most useful to start at 18 and up it a bit and use tattoos to keep it around 25 until other bonuses come in.

I started off with STR at 9 and ended around 23 and I only put a few points in it...there are a lot of things that can raise strength so don't worry about having it that high early on. Your NPCs are good at fighting too so you don't have to be.

BTW, what had me confused about healing was that The Nameless One seems to self heal constantly, with no need to rest to do so. Morte, apparently, does not. I thought this was do to wearing the Embalming charm, but it turns out that this is not the case, and that the charm has a limited number of uses, as Jamski stated.

well i restarted last night. It seems very hard to explore the top level of the Mortuary without getting into a fight with the dustmen. Of course the resulting fights are easy to win, but I wonder if Im missing some potential interaction by doing so.

I found a

back way out of the mortuary, a tomb that gives me a note from Penn. But this caused me to miss the encounter with my dead woman friend
and so im not sure its a good idea. I think I'll go back to an earlier save, and try to get the encounter.

That's how to move freely in the mortuary - if a little slowly...

I think you can also say something to get away from fighting the dustmen. Or just run away from them.

Yeah, running away seems to work. I managed to get the Mortuary santum key that way. Now to get the disguise, I need to turn over a needle and embalming fluid. I already gave the above to Ta-Viene (sp?) to get the other key from her. Now ISTR theres another needle and more fluid somewhere in the mortuary, maybe on the first floor, but Im not sure. Also by not going around killing zombies and dustmen, im not getting so much stuff, so maybe I cant get another needle and fluid. Im kinda thinking its not worth getting disguised and going back to the top floor, having already fully looted it. Might as well just go talk to the person Dall mentioned, and then depart.

well, despite avoiding the dusties on the third floor, I still ended up in nasty combat on the first floor - so I ran and left via the portal - Id already had the key encounter on the first floor. Went out to the Hive (No Yang here, it seems ) Its quite rough. Not trying to fight all the thugs with only the two of us, so I run instead. Did finish exploring the area near the mortuary, went West.

that's what I'd have to do if those thugs roughed me up too much.

It was a little tough at first, but before you know it, no street thug will touch you .

there's this one street battle that was real tough. It's when this damsel leads you to an ambush.
