Ted Striker's right. Atkins does help to provide some subtle improvements to the "recommended" diet - white bread, potatoes, white rice are all junk food.
The ideal diet consists of
i) lean protein (chicken, egg whites, tuna)
ii) low-GI carbs (oats, wholemeal bread and pasta, brown and basmati rice)
iii) good fats (peanuts, oily fish, olive oil)
iv) fresh fruit and veg
Always have a protein source with every meal, and never have fats and carbs together. So two types of meal: protein & carbs (earlier in the day), and protein & fats (later in day).
This is all easy. Include 1-2 sessions of weight training a week, a 1-2 sessions of moderate cardio and you'll be moving towards the ideal body shape IMO.

You have achieved True Player status. Perfect meal plan.
The beauty of this plan is that you can use it both to gain muscle and to lose fat. Hell, if you are really good at it, you can do both at the same time.

quote: There is a near perfect diet. Its the Diabetes diet. The problem with that one is that it has been copywritten so you cannot publish it. Your doctor cannot even tell you the diet, you have to have your doctor refer you to a nutritionist, who is liscenced under the organization that owns the copywrite, and have that person with little or no medical training prescribe you the diet.
The Atkin's diet though is completely flawed. The biggest risks are not even because of heart disease, they are from the ketosis. |
quote: You can be both. The diabetic diet is "low carb". But the diets these people espouse, Atkins, South Beach, etc take it to an unhealthy extreme.
Why would diabetics, to whom carbs are extremely dangerous have 15g for breakfast , 45 for lunch, 60 for dinner, and 30, and 30 for each of thier 2 snacks? Vs the 15g a day for Atkins.
So 180g of carbs per day for the best researched, most proven, most healthy diet known to man. 15 g for Atkins. I think 45 for south beach? One gives you ~800 calories, plenty for your brain and heart, the other 2 give you " "keto-breath" as it's affectionately called by many low-carbers in ketosis. " |

And heart, but this statement completely ruins all his arguements. This was my point exactly and is one of the biggest reasons they Atkin's is an unhealthy farce.
The only other arguement I see is that I said 15g rather than 20. Well the original Atkin's Diet, since the 70s called for 15g for "induction", a process that lasts several weeks according to atkin's but actually can take less than a day biologically and a few hours if you do sport. Perhaps either the "New Diet Revolution" or "Atkin's for life" has changed it to 20g, so thats a nice change of ~25 calories. Enjoy that cracker.
As for the change in Carb intake, yes, you do step up from 15 and SOME people CAN have higher levels of carbs, but the way the diet is structured they make sure noone does.60 carbs max, but even the poster admits to only being up to 25. Still severely lacking and if you exercise at all after eating the carbs... Why is the induction period so long? Because most of the loss in the begining is due to water weight and bowel weight. You lose rapidly in the begining because your body is adjusting to a malnurished state and you lost a good amount of water and bacteria bulk . Once you past the initial drop you can change to 0 carbs and lose only 1-2 pounds a week, but if you go too high your kidneys will start working better and retaining water properly and you will put on weight very fast. So, the diet is designed so that after a false "induction" period you get to add 5g carbs each week!!! Well the vast majority of people end up adding 5 or 10 carbs.
After you are done with the diet you maintain a low level of carbs and remain in ketosis, despite what Che believes. No its not 15 or 20 grams like when you are losing weight, but it is a level that will continue ketosis, allow you to eat tons of fats etc and maintain a weight at the expense of your heart, brain, etc. |
