I have no idea what you're talking about...

The thing that worried me most for NZ is the TV kept cutting to piccies of Henry and Hansen in the gallery. The combination that took Wales right down the tube – how long will the honeymoon last I wonder?

Who knows, perhaps the failure of Wales was due to other factors? Henry can't be all bad. He was a very successful Auckland coach for a long time.

Well, he comes from the Highlanders, disappointment won't bother him.

It is interesting how both the PI’s and the Boks have treated the games against the ABs very differently in recent years. It seems almost required to try and murder a few Wallabies.

Yes, everyone likes to have a chop at the Wallabies. Even when the Boks were at their biffo worst, they were less so against the ABs. Maybe they thought certain Wallabies would retaliate, which they did. And maybe that was why the PIs head-hunted against us.

quote:
This used to be a no brainer for me. I would back the Abs without thinking twice. But strangely this year I have a little devil on my shoulder that would like to see Henry crash and burn (there is a nasty vindictive side to my nature that two huge losses brings to the fore). Can I support the Wallabies? A painful decision awaits.

If we can get into their faces, and our defence holds up, we can win. Gregan will be missed, and Roff, too, obviously, but I thought our defence stood up better against the PIs than the ABs' did. Whitaker's hands are the equal of - perhaps better than - Gregan's. What Whitaker might lack is the actual hard match practice.

quote:
The other game is just as hard – the Boks played some great rugby against Ireland and it was free of the recent problems with discipline. But I guess I have to go with the side RaMbeni is with. Go Tigers!

It's the Boks' big test, isn't it? Ireland misfired a lot. The PIs are bigger than the Boks, just as mobile, and quicker. I think it boils down to structure. Good structure always threatens any of the PI teams individually and the combined outfit as a whole. We kept ours, the ABs, for their own reasons, tended to play the PIs at their own freestyle game. If the Boks hang onto their structure they could win. If they don't, and if the PIs are on song, the PIs could have a lot of fun.

quote:
But why? Henry and Hansen are both very dour men. They show almost no emotion. It’s like watching paint dry?

Who knows? They show both coaching boxes more than is either necessary or interesting. A quick look at management when their team is in trouble is interesting. Leave it at that.

quote:
Apparently Tigers have lost Neil Baxter, the young wing poached from league who showed promise before injury wrecked his season. He was offered a new deal but allegedly turned it down because he was not guaranteed the game time he desired. If true it may reflect the differences with league – Union squads seldom have ‘guaranteed starts’ in their deals.

Mmm. Not prepared to take his chances on merit? The rumor here was that Wendell had been guaranteed Wallaby selection. I doubt it.

quote:
still it means Healey has probably secured more time on the wing. He will make the Lions yet. Lets hope he finds time to visit Australia too and pick up his diplomatic work where he left off?

Or even make a couple more of his limp, excrutiatingly bad hair-replacement ads. I never ever thought I'd see someone who made Graham Gooch look and sound interesting.

That has to be one of the most putting cut downs I have ever read. Of course it will not mean much to those lucky enough never to have heard Gooch speak in public.

quote:
I have no idea what you're talking about...

I was just pointing out Neil Back and Richie McCaw would have been proud of the boy.

quote:
He was a very successful Auckland coach for a long time.

He was – but with a specific approach. I think my concern with him is that whilst the game moves on I am not sure Henry does.

Wales certainly don’t (and didn’t) have the talent that he has to hand in the ABs. But that may not be a good thing – he may be able to hide behind that talent for a while. The problem is he risks being found out when a side finds the key to unlock his plan A. One persistent message form the Lions was that he is inflexible – persisting with a game plan in the third test that had been undone in the second. Time will tell. The odds are certainly against him making it to RWC 2007 – no nation churns through coaches the way NZ does?

quote:
Well, he comes from the Highlanders, disappointment won't bother him.

Yes but he hasn’t signed for Bath. This is our year again. I feel it in my beer glass.

quote:
Yes, everyone likes to have a chop at the Wallabies

Think of it as a compliment?

It will be interesting to see if the PI try to ignite the Bok fuses.

quote:
but I thought our defence stood up better against the PIs than the ABs' did.

It did – but as you pointed out that was partly due to the ABs deciding to play them at their own favourite fast and loose game. Having said that the Wallabies have looked very well drilled in defence in all the games this year. Are we brave enough to set a margin for Saturday?

quote:

I cannot see Eddie wearing that? It’s only rumour about our lad but it would not surprise me at all.

The Kiwi side has been named, Henry wheeling out the big guns:

1. Kees Meeuws, 2. Keven Mealamu, 3. Carl Hayman, 4. Chris Jack, 5. Keith Robinson, 6. Jono Gibbes, 7. Richie McCaw, 8. Xavier Rush, 9. Justin Marshall, 10. Carlos Spencer, 11. Joe Rokocoko, 12. Daniel Carter, 13. Tana Umaga, 14. Doug Howlett, 15. Mils Muliaina

Reserves: 16. Andrew Hore, 17. Greg Somerville, 18. Jerry Collins, 19. Marty Holah, 20. Byron Kelleher, 21. Nick Evans, 22. Sam Tuitupou

The only variation to the team that beat the snot out of the world champion poms is on the bench - Somerville coming on for Woodcock.

McCaw and Howlet back into the side from injury. Apparently McCaw still gets headaches every now and again, so he’s not guaranteed to start. Howlet no doubt will be wanting to score tries - his wing partner Cocopops having made a pig of himself so far this season.

The back reserves still see no room for Andrew Mehrtens, so the coaching staff must be quite confident that the Spencer performance against the PIs is a one off. So Nick Evans gets thrown in the hot seat should King Carlos be crocked.

ABs by 7.

I think it's too early to tell yet what his plan A might be. Apart from toughening up and making more of use his forwards than his predecessor did. He'll survive till the World Cup.

If we had Roff and Gregan playing, I'd be fairly condident, which, for me, is saying something! Still, our defence has been very good, and I think our back row can stand up to theirs, but our pack will be pummelled ... speaking of which, I thought the AB pack strongarmed the PI pack pretty effectively.

No, Eddie wouldn't have worn it. But I still think Eddie has persisted with him too long. Especially starting him in front of Rathbone this season!

Frankly, as a Wallaby supporter, I'm delighted to see Evans there instead of Mehrtens. Evans is blindingly quick across the ground, but I thought he looked a bit lost in the big time last time. And you can be sure we'll try him out. I'd hate to see Mehrtens coming off the bench and organising things like he has recently.

I think Evans shows a lot of potential. He is very quick, but also has a good boot, great hands, and a great brain. Jeff Wilson was being developed when he was at that stage too, so was Cocopops. He may not be playing in his best position yet either.

But I agree that Mehrts should be there. After watching the PI game, I remain concerned at Carlos’ ability (and he was behind a dominant pack) to run a game, to keep the opposition on the back foot, and to lock them in their own end of the paddock.

Speaking of our pack, did everyone notice how well our tight five are progressing? They pushed the 940kg PI pack up and down the park. They dominated the scrums, lineouts and mauls, and tackled and tidied up like loose forwards. Meeuws, Hayman and Meealamu whacked away all night, Robinson was simply superb - the best all-round performance by an AB lock that I can remember - and Jack was in such good nick that Henry decided to get him off the field before he could pick an injury. I realise that although the PI pack might be heavy, they don't really play at the top level, but it was nice to watch all the same.

Actually the Wallabies recorded a better score against fifteen Poms than this mob managed against fourteen.

But ‘World Champions’ remains the key expression – as in we are and you aren’t.

I think Mehrtens should take the hint now and move for the money. There are plenty of Englishmen who would welcome him with open arms so they can hear more of his views about the English.

He won’t even survive the tri-nations if they lose twice to you. I have never seen a more unforgiving Union with coaches. How many in the last decade? Or even this century?

quote:

I find it makes everything look better.

Although before Xmas last year it didn’t help too much with Tigers.

quote:
speaking of which, I thought the AB pack strongarmed the PI pack pretty effectively.

Yes it’s very annoying how much he has galvanised them. And Robinson, though I think him something of a dillhead, has proved to be the right man alongside Jack. Getting Dunning onto the wing early to run at Rokocoko might be the best forward play (as in cripple the big Fijian)?

quote:
But I still think Eddie has persisted with him too long. Especially starting him in front of Rathbone this season!

Money talks – and the Aussie Union spent big on him. Henry Paul got too many chances here too early – infamously messing up in Paris when we conceded a Slam in 2002. I guess the ARU was really disappointed to find they had acquired a big direct running Ox with little nonce?

I think you are right though Finbar – the absence of Roff and Gregan will be key in NZ.

I still get headaches about three hours after the final whistle – does that count?

I saw Evans have some blinders in S12. There's no doubt he has great talent. Whether he's ready yet is another matter. I thought his inexperience showed last time at this level. Still, good luck to them for giving him a chance. Carlos hasn't been effective against us on the last two occasions we've played. We shall see.

Yes. They did well. As Havak has pointed out, the big bastard with the crew cut has made all the difference.

Good point. They're big and strong, but their technique can't be all that flash. Still, shoving that much meat around is an achievement in itself.

I seem to have developed a form of Pavlovian response. Every time I see you mention "World Champions", I feel the urge to mention "fifth ranked team in the world".

Okay, so who do we think should start favourites? And what sort of margin? Andydog thought ABs by 7? Meaning a 6.5 or 7.5 start for the Wallabies? I've still got our Civ Gold bank balances on my HD. I'll dig them up and post them tomorrow.

And don't forget we have the Boks -v- the PIs on Saturday as well. Any thoughts on a favourite there? And a margin?

Good old Eddie. Accusing NZ of being illegal at the breakdown and insisting Irishman Alain Rolland polices it.

What with that and Robinson nursing a back injury Saturday is looking more interesting now.

quote:

Does telling an untruth count as Pavlovian then?

My statement is accurate – yours is two places out. And the only two teams above us are the ones who got very lucky last month. Lucky that Clive has such a huge ego and that Dally couldn’t direct traffic. And that the other 30 players who went thought it was a sightseeing tour.

The Wallabies may lose that position come November – and the ABs will go the traditional NZ route and avoid playing us in England for twenty years now.

quote:

He will linger in the hope that my prediction of Henry’s demise beats your optimism for the man. When the next coach ignores him he may take the hint.

Call you harsh for criticising the home counties? Not me.

McCaw is like Jack (and possibly Robinson this season) – a class apart from the normal. Hollah is okay – but against pug nose and dreadlocks he pales in comparison.

quote:
By rights, Mortlock should be skipper.

Makes more sense – Sharpe is hardly safe in his position and seldom manages 80?

Seven point start for Aussies? That tempting. How much cash have I got?

Bok’s-PI’s is tough but I suspect 7 to the Islanders is fair. The Boks will bring more structure to the party than the ABs did last week, and I fancy their back row will disrupt PI set piece possession pretty well. The backs are boys against giants though…?

Tigers paid off Ramiro Pez yesterday – two years early. He second earned only to Jonno alledgedly. Not Deano’s best legacy! If you thought Luger was a rabbit in the headlights you should have seen Pez when a flanker ran at him!

We also have a Samoan Fly half here under evaluation – guy called Roger Warren. Anyone know anything about this resident of south-south Leicester?

Oh, I've just been watching the British Open at Troon. I'm very fond of golf. I wish I had more talent at the game. Anyway, I particularly enjoy watching the Majors to see the fat, sulking Scot implode. He was 2 under coming to the 18th. Of course, he has just split with his wife. She booted the fat, sulking poonce out, more like. Be that as it may, he was teeing up on the 18th. The commentator observed that Monty had celebrated his wedding reception beside the 18th roughly 14 years earlier, and assumed he would have put such a memory out of his mind. Thankfully not. The fat, sulking haggis squirted it right into long grass, hacked it out short of the green, knocked it on to about 15 feet ... and, unfortunately, holed the putt for par. Still, there's always tomorrow for the fat, sulking dirigible to go down in flames!

Nuh. France, Ireland, the All Blacks and the Wallabies have beaten you. Oh, and the Boks beat the Irish, so, logically, that slips the Boks in front of you, too. And if the PIs beat the Boks, that, logically, slips the PIs in front of as well.

Mmmm. So I retract my earlier denial that I was wrong. I was wrong. You're sixth. Seventh, if the PIs beat the Boks.

Call you harsh for criticising the home counties? Not me.

Is Hampshire a home county? I won't hear a word against anywhere that produced John Arlott and his sublime accent.

quote:
Makes more sense – Sharpe is hardly safe in his position and seldom manages 80?

As I say, an accident of timing. Anyway, there's plenty of experience around him.

quote:
Seven point start for Aussies? That tempting. How much cash have I got?

Let me scroll down and have a look ... you have 88.05. I'm not sure what units Civ Gold breaks down into, but you have 5 of them.

Andydog has reckoned 6.5 start for the Wallabies. I think that's fair. I'm tempted to have something on them.

quote:
Bok’s-PI’s is tough but I suspect 7 to the Islanders is fair. The Boks will bring more structure to the party than the ABs did last week, and I fancy their back row will disrupt PI set piece possession pretty well. The backs are boys against giants though…?

The London Kiwi reckons 9.5 start for the PIs. I reckon that's fair too. I honestly have no idea how the game will pan out.

Tigers paid off Ramiro Pez yesterday – two years early. He second earned only to Jonno alledgedly. Not Deano’s best legacy! If you thought Luger was a rabbit in the headlights you should have seen Pez when a flanker ran at him!

Paid out his contract or a settlement?

quote:
We also have a Samoan Fly half here under evaluation – guy called Roger Warren. Anyone know anything about this resident of south-south Leicester?

Don't know him. I'll do some checking. Relative to your prior para, though, about rabbits in headlights - perhaps Warren is an unfortunate name?

7 seems a bit light to me, how about a 9.5pt start for the PI's? I'll put 30 gold on the Boks!

As I observed to Havak, I reckon those margins are fair. If he agrees on the PI-Boks margin, I shall record your bets. You Civ Gold billionaire, you!

Tired of ads?

With those margins...

30 on the ABs and 30 on the PIs.

Put an end to popups!

Crikey has Monty hit on your partner or something?

quote:
The Irish grenouille is reffing? Wonderful. I love his accent.

He is quite a poor ref sadly. Probably only about 200% better than anything you have down there.

Hmm the hook was showing right through that scratty bit of bait?

I don't know, I was telling the truth!

You were using a form of logic I have previously been criticised for.

Adapting it to my own use – Aus are 2nd in the rankings, we beat them in the RWC final therefore we are 2nd in the rankings…? Chronology is not my strong point.

Lets just leave it at we are World Champions. Cue Pavlov...

I regret to confirm it is indeed a ‘Home County’.

Behind him. Not in front.

I must have been swindled!

Settlement reportedly. But Tigers are ultra secretive about such things.

And yes Warren is an unfortunate name in that context!

The margins are fine by me. 10 on the Wallabies (yes I know…). 5 on the Islanders (no I do not mean the ABs!) to add some interest.

No, the fat, sulking tosser earns my wrath merely for being what he is - a fat, sulking tosser forever prepared to blame everyone else when something goes wrong, unable to contemplate the possibility that he, even sometimes, might be at fault. He was at it again last night. Lining up a putt, a mosquito farted on the island of Skye. He pulled away from the putt, glared in the direction of Skye, returned to the putt, and missed it. And blamed the mosquito. Someone like Darren Clarke, OTOH, would light another smoke, order a pint, and get on with life. But then he's a Paddy. It's hard to credit that Sam Torrance and the fat, sulking tosser fall under the same flag.

You're not wrong. If you'd simply typed: "You'll like him as a ref", it would have made the same point in a marginally more subtle way.

Of course. It was working to your advantage. Now it's working to mine, so it's fair enough.

No, obviously not.

Speaking of the dead Russian, as we are, Dermott demonstrated the theory the weekend before last. I was bringing him back from the park in the car. I saw a cat loitering outside next door. Thinking he hadn't seen the cat, I waited till the cat disappeared inside next door's property. I opened the car door. Dermott bolted straight into next door after the cat. The cat fled into the next property with Dermott at a million miles an hour after it. Out of that property, down and across the street - down quite a steep hill - along the footpath, before the cat vaulted a 3' stone wall and up into a garden. Followed by Dermott. I'm bellowing after him, he's deaf to my bellowing.

Then silence for about 90 seconds and no sign of Dermott or cat. Then Dermott reappears out of the garden and up the middle of the road. Carrying his front left paw. Staggering back up the hill on three legs, up the middle of the road, he looked like an old Confederate soldier limping home from Gettysburg.

End result: a trip to the vet and $94 later, he'd damaged his wrist (the first joint up a dog's leg) and was on anti-inflammatories for 5 days. It's still not right. I think I'll have to take him back for an x-ray.

Gotcha. I'm inclined to go the same way.

Now. On a completely unrelated matter. Have you ever contemplated joining the church? I read in this morning's paper that researchers have pieced together the diet of the average medieval monk:

Lunch - eggs fried in lard, porridge, pork chops, bacon, mutton, 225 grams of bread and 4 pints of beer.

Dinner - mutton stew, venison, fish stew, bread and dripping, 4 pints of beer and a flagon of wine.

It wasn't noted, but I'm sure the researchers also discovered, used as a bookmark in a medieval monk's Bible, a season ticket to Welford Road.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Late post – been working hard.

Twas not me betraying Emporer Tony Finbar. My Constituency is a Tory stronghold. If they ever lose Melton and Rutland they are finished as a party.

What made me laugh about both by elections is the Tories brought in a highly reputed campaign manager and still finished a poor third.

And I’ll have Caligastia know I am a really generous guy. I buy a round each and every month of Sundays.

You certainly feel strongly about then guy. I can watch golf and enjoy it but I find listening to Monty and most other golfers/pundits has the same effect on me Goochy used to – very good for insomnia.

Of course. It was working to your advantage. Now it's working to mine, so it's fair enough.

Yes I see your point I think.

But Tigers beat Wasps twice – that must make us league and European Champions? I like this system!

Staggering back up the hill on three legs, up the middle of the road, he looked like an old Confederate soldier limping home from Gettysburg.

Hope the old boy feels better soon.

You realise he got the better of you – fooled you into thinking he had not seen the cat? Score one to Dermott!

For the first time in a long time I am feeling religious again.
