Throwing off the yoke of despotism
Until now, the only government known on the continent wielded an iron fist. Change was stirring as thinkers and scholars thought of more enlightened forms of government.
Golden ages of philosophy began in the Vovan Empire, Iguana Fire, and among the Spaced Dudes.
Spurred on by their discoveries, the people of DarkCloud's Iguana Fire began thinking of the wider world, and studied Geography. With knowledge of new lands came promise of even greater trade. Furthering the prosperous times, the Eastern Provinces were settled. (C3)
Vovan also broadened his geographic horizons, and although he still had no neighbors, began to raise a military of five armies.
While more expansion would be required to make war, Vovan's spies were already at work. A wooden donkey carrying Vovanian agents made its way to the Cubium capital of Pyramedes. Within it were assassins plotting to kill key Cubish leaders and sabotage Gameis' research and production.
Upon arriving they were disappointed. The leaders they were sent to kill were already dead, executed by monarchist revolutionaries.

Back in Byzantium, Duke discovered Monarchy and also founded Eboracum. (H8) Basileus Jamski still had not returned from his orc-hunting quest.

The great tale of our time was the race to build the Acropolis. Ljube's Serbs, the world's first Philosophers, committed their entire treasury of 22 gold. The opulent complex featured solid marble construction and gold inlays in the main council chamber.
The glories of Serbia were short lived though, when the scholars that were to help found the new republic packed up and left one day.
They had gone to Pony Town, where an incredible capital awaited. Perched high on a mountaintop, Spaced's golden city of republican rule beckoned. The Dudes were quick learners in the ways of the Republic,, with one of their first discoveries being the pork barrel which consumed a total of 47 gold in the building of the Acropolis. However, the greatly increased commerce of a free society made up for it quickly.

Clarification. Trade income can be spent the same turn as the trade for the sender. Just add the profit to the gold you had earlier for use in Production.

Overheard at a caravan depot...
Lots of news was heard at the lively depot today out in the central plains.
The Cubish, under King Gameis' rule, had a renaissance, with great thinkers developing new theories in Philosophy, Geography, and Religion.
The Byzantines joined the philosophy club as well, and also built two new cities, Jorvik (G8) and Ducktown (F8). The Duke also raised five additional armies.
The Spaced Dudes expanded their ranchland, building Wastewater, Stillwater, CalfPond, and GoatRoper. The first three were founded in E6, F6, and E5, but the settlers headed to F8 found it already settled by Byzantines and headed for E9 instead. They also raised a massive military of sixty armies and developed knowledge of Geography.
A revolution took place in the Vovan Empire. Revolutionaries demanded the formation of a republic. Without a solid hold though, there was still much squabbling, and after a short-lived Reign of Terror the revolutionaries were sent to the guillotine. Emperor Vovan, fearing a repeat, immediately reformed his government from empire to monarchy.
Note: Unless you have the Acropolis, you need to have Tech #9 to change to Republic.
The Serbs expanded out of crowded Belgrade into Novi Sad, Nis, Kragujevac, and Subotica. (H4) (G4) (H2) (G2)
DarkCloud founded some Southern Provinces in B5. He also built the Silk Road, which we've been happy to enjoy today.
Since there were no Dude caravans at the depot, we were late in hearing about the big story of our time...
The War of Neverwinter
While roaming through the southern wastelands, Jamski awoke a giant sleeping magfly. He slew it easily, but the gods of war had been awakened.
Forty armies bearing the banners of the Spaced Dudes crossed the Rio Pequeno and marched on Byzantium. Duke was caught off guard by this sneak attack. Fortunately, he had built new forces recently, but they were spread thin among his expanded empire.

While he had the force to have conquered all of Byzantine twice over, in order to keep his attack a secret, his armies only had supplies to take the adjacent territories. The city of Byzantium as well as the newly built cities of Jorvik and Ducktown were swiftly captured. Duke fled to York.

Two of Spaced Cowboy's armies were killed by the defenses of Byzantium. Six of Duke's armies went down in last stands at his cities.
