Yea, Metali has it right. Check out the DiploFAQ (in my sig) it explains war in a Diplogame. War definitely happens, but its measured and in response to something real in the game. Its not all out war from the beginning like in a duel or something. And usually people avoid early wars, but there are no hard fast rules. Except don't eliminate anyone, cause it dampens everyone's enjoyment.

Just tell a story and roleplay your civ as if you were a real world leader.

Check out the FAQ and then check out some story threads from old games. Those are quite enjoyable reads.

I hope you enjoy them. That's the true wonder of Diplogames, they live on after the game is won or lost, whereas most games don't. We go back and read them later, and non-players follow along. HOTW2 had a large audience of people both from Apolyton and CivFanatics who followed along with the epic game.

We need to develop that kind of respect for diplogames again. Of course its tough when no one visits this forum. If we are gonna keep diplogaming alive, its important to expand our base.

Full PM-box? Change here!

sorry havent been here , still got a few tech problems to solve...

anyway...

map size i vote for bigger because i love the exploration phase

map type... world of course i love them

difficulty.... dont care as we all play the same level so it ok , but to be honest in SP games i only play cheiften i hate the other levels.

now as to a few questions asked here..

1. WAR?? Yes it happens and it happens often but a reason is needed and this may simply be that a fundamentalist government took over your nation, but for this to happen then you need to change governments in game, you cvant rage fundamental type wars with a democratic government. most of the rules we use are simpyl common snese. but yes you can expect sneak attacks. so dotn go leaving all your citys undefended!! Usually if this occurs the rest of the world will use sanctions or even intervention to stop the war.

2. ROLEPLAY. This is critical, there is no diplo game with out roleplay and that means not only in the game but also every week here at poly. go see other examples , but hoperfulyl you wil lagree that the game feels more real when all roleplay and post.

I beleive as with all these type of games that early planning and so forth prevents many problems later ..

i know it seems that things are moving slowly at present , but hopefully ozzy is playing with some map designs while we wait.

a few more thigns we need to figure out is do we go with the civilisations traits and unique units ??

I would prefer to have both remvoed to even up the playing field a little.

I think it'd be cool to have them. Though there would then be some competition to get the "good" civs. (i don't yet know which are good, so i may be at a disadvantage) but I dunno, its part of the charm of civ3.

Put an end to popups!

On the map front, I think we are gonna have to find something pre-made and just make do. My busy-ness (and the crappy map editor) will win out over my perfectionism for maps.

I started work on it a bit, and it was not going smoothly, the terrain is weird in Civ3. And the map editor sucks, so... no map from me. Sorry guys.

yeah i had a try too, but way too fiddly for me to do a real world map that looks good. Might try to search for some premade ones and then do some mods to improve it to get it more real for a diplo game.

forgetting Civ specific unique units or traits... all this seems editable from the editor ( i think)

so any calls for civs yet..

i will go my usual and claim a starting point in mid east Israel for me.

Loading up the last HOTW4 save, I counted 206 cities, with room for a few more. So I don't think a huge map is good, but it looks like standard may be too small.

The bigger the map, the longer the delay caused by the game mechanics. I propose a world as small as possible.

Originally posted by OzzyKP But I find managing cities and large empires more tedious in Civ3 than Civ2. Especially because of the crippling corruption. Large empires are a ridiculous burden i've seen. In the few games I've played, I've actually moved to playing on small random maps, cause standard is too much crap to worry about. *shrug*

But we could do a large size map. What are the dimensions of that?

Well, in civ 3 you don't care much about those corrupt cities, quite unlike anything in civ2.

Difficulty: I suggest low difficulty. Monarch, emperor at most.

Which game are we talking about? Conquests or Play the World?

Size: Medium at most.
Map: World or random, I have no preference.

I suggest a real MP game, not PBEM.

Ljube: Yea, I agree on smaller maps, corruption throws everything off. I figure we use Conquests, its the most current. Low difficulty is fine by me. I haven't made it past emporer yet, and struggle at that yet in SP, so I'm fine with whatever.

Got spare money?

Ok, I found a map with fairly good dimensions. At least for a trial run. Its 100x100. It may be on the small side, but maybe not. We'll find out.

The map sucked, so I edited it, and now it sucks a little less. Still grating for me, but for less exacting players I'm sure it'll be fine.

Everything is set with the map, I'm just editing the resources now. But I do need a firm commitment of players, so I know how many are playing. For luxuries and strategic resources I'm just going to put as many of each as there are players.

People who make maps are freaken crazy when it comes to resources, bonus, strategic and lux, they put one resource every other tile pretty much, its ugly. I'm going through stripping this puppy bare.

I've got them placed in historical locations, so we can have some fun with stuff like the Mid-east having half the world's oil, and silk being in China, etc. Competition for resources is what made the world what it is, and I think it'll make our game much more fun.

Plus with the colonialism option, I'm gonna make the majority of some resources exist only overseas, so people will have to scramble to get them.

Problem is, the map sucks a bit, so the oceans are very narrow. We may have to impose some artificial restraints on early colonialism, cause otherwise someone can get from Ireland to New Foundland with the very first ship.

So, how many players? Call your spots now.

Raz - Israel
Ozzy - India
Granpa Troll - China
Ljube - Russia
Metaliturtle - ?
Dylan Baker - ?
?- ?

With the map set up, I'm thinking 1 in West Europe, 1 in east europe/russia, 1 in south Africa, 1 in mideast/north africa, 1 india, 1 china.

That's closest to Serbia I can get

I suggest we start even if we don't get eight players. With five perhaps? Just to get things going.

Maybe we can convince good ol' deity to join us. Or is he solely a civ2 player?

Sir Ralph would be a fine addition too.

Ok. We've got the map decided on, and lets just go with Monarch difficulty.

Next things we need to decide are whether we want civ traits/unique units and when we want to play this game. Time to vote again folks. Lets get this moving, we're almost there.

Civ traits/unique units:
Raz - No
Ozzy - Yes
Granpa Troll - ?
Ljube - ?
Metaliturtle - ?
Dylan Baker - ?

List all the times you can/can't make a game:
Raz - ?
Ozzy - Friday nights and any time on Saturday (US) work best for me.
Granpa Troll - ?
Ljube - ?
Metaliturtle - ?
Dylan Baker - ?

1. Civ traits are a big no no for me, too unbalancing.

2. Time is not a big issue so im flexible.

3. I prefer to try this MP style to get the diplo feel of instant diplomacy rather than waiting for emails to discuss diplomacy.

4. I prefer the bigger maps but 100x100 should be a good starting point.

5. hopefuly everyone rembers this is a learning experince and any problems will be identified and rectified for the next version.

6. Granpa troll : please dont judge this game by previous experiences, diplo is a whole new ball game that brings withit many delays of its own , so the problems you listed will be the least fo our concerns and if you go back and read the logs of previous Diplo games especially the HOTW series you will see the big thing is solidarity, it gets you through all the minor issues of non turnups on game day and slow connection speeds.

So let HOTW5.0 begin....

PS . Remember Ljube we can rename the civs to serbia for you. and if we choose no civ traits then it dont matter which civ you choose,
