Metaliturtle PMed me to say he is having trouble with his computer/game, I'm not sure he'll be able to make this game. I haven't heard from Dylan Baker in a while either.

If we end up going with Raz, Grandpa Troll, Ljube, me & Tokah, I'll recommend Tokah to be in Western Europe, and I'll switch to S. Africa so as not to crowd Asia.

Though of course we do have different concerns with civ traits and UUs in a Diplogame because of geopolitics. I'll probably end up moving to S. Africa just because there is space there, and I'll end up with Zulu, whose traits and UU seem entirely unsuited for a diplogame.

Also, if Raz wants to be Israel, well there isn't an Israeli civ. So... I could just rename the Babylonians, and change their starting spot and city list. That shouldn't be too hard.

So yea, Raz is right that things could be unbalancing. (especially for those poor Zulu) but I still think it'll enrich the game, so I want to go for it.

ANother question to answer is victory conditions. Which of these do we want to allow?

Domination
Space Race
Diplomatic
Conquest
Cultural
Wonder

?

What is the status here? I've just discovered that I play all my civ games like a diplo game. This looks like it will be a bit slow for me though.

I'll be happy to help you get started though. Are you still looking for a map? I've never made one before, but I can give it a try. I can do any of the other modding you decide on as well.

Let me know if you can use my help.

Ok, come right on in 1889. Welcome. We've got a map, we just need you to pick a time. I hope you don't mind being the Zulu.

Map - World 100x100 Posted earlier.
Difficulty - Monarch
Civ traits/unique units - Yes (sorry Raz)

List all the times you can/can't make a game:
Raz - Any
Ozzy - Friday nights and any time on Saturday (US) work best for me.
Granpa Troll - ?
Ljube - Saturday
Tokah - Saturday before 6 PM EST
1889 - ?

Civ:
Raz - Israel
Ozzy - India
Grandpa Troll - China
Ljube - Russia
Tokah - France
1889 - Zulu (I made an executive decision here, just cause that's where we've got room)

Victory conditions:
Raz - ?
Ozzy - Embarassingly, I don't know exactly what each one does, so I dunno which I'd want. Can someone post a crib sheet?
Grandpa Troll - Diplomatic
Ljube - ?
Tokah - All but Wonders
1889 - ?

Also, while the Zulu traits aren't the best for diplo (of course we've never tried it before, so who knows) they do have a lot more room than anyone else, so that's definitely a good thing)

Ok, we are pretty much ready to go. I think we've got our roster set. 6 players. 3 vet diplogamers, and 3 newbies. Very cool. Also, Grandpa, 1889, and Tokah, please join the Diplogame civ-group. We fought hard to have it, and I want people (especially new people) to join up.

So I think Saturday is the best day. What is the best time? We are dealing with three very different time zones here (ugh) so it'll be damn tricky to pull off. 1889 said anything before 6 pm EST. What does that mean for Australlia and Europe?

Also, Grandpa Troll, 1889, and Tokah, I strongly urge you all to read through the diploFAQ, posted here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...threadid=101988

It may be geared for Civ2, but its has great insight into the game. Since this is the first diplo in Civ3, we are rewritting the handbook as we speak. Exciting! Also, please go to the bottom of the FAQ and check out some of the old games. That'll give you a very real look at how a diplo works.

Ok, so unless I'm totally messing up the time zones here, let me take a stab at it. We start the session at 10 AM EST, which would be 4 PM (16:00) in Belgrade, and 12 AM (0:00) in Brisbane.

or if that's too late for you Raz, I could get up early and go for 9 am.. Remember though that for HOTW4, I was the one playing till like 3-4 in the morning. So now its your turn.

Am I right? Or no?

Enter the AD-FREE zone

I'm usually on from 15-24 GMT. You just need that for play order right?

Zulu are fine. If you mess with me I get to kick your ass right? Thats what Shaka would have done.

I say allow all victory conditions.

I've read through most of DiploFAQ. As I understand it we just play a normal game of Civ3 PBEM, except we try to write a story as our nation develops.

Why should I join the Diplo group?

I thought you had decided at the start of this thread to do it as a PBEM. MP is no good for me. I didn't even realize I was way out here in the MP forum.

Stick around 1889, give it a shot. This is a trial run, so we are all learning.

I don't see how to do diplomacy in PBEM. Seems impossible to me. You need people right in front of you to interact with.

But I'm definitely open to trying a PBEM after this game. I do think we should all give MP a try once. Please stick around 1889, Grandpa Troll is giving it a shot too.

Diplomacy, for the record, would be very easy in pbem as well as MP

PBEM is nothing more than 1 turn at a time

MP is fast paced...(we all HOPE it is at least!!)

My only real complaint is that I have played so many games and when you add so many different time zones and more people more problems, I will give it a try but will bail should it be a flop

Cheers

and up for the effort

Another thing is, modding seems to be fairly difficult in Civ3. I've just spent the last 2 hours **adding one fricken unit** to the game. Ugh. What a pain.

I did find a nice tutorial over at CFC that walked me through the whole thing. So I try to test it, and the damn game crashes. Ugh. Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Got spare money?

I have kids. Thats not compatable with a schedule.

Also I really hate MP. I always feel rushed.

Diplomacy in PBEM is all done through email or PM. It works out because the games only move one turn a day or less.

One turn a day...

That is insane. Why would anyone want to play a game like that? A good diplo lasts 6 months or more and we play a helluva lot more than a turn a day. (though things do slow as we get later in the game)

Sh.t, a PBEM diplo would take 3 years.

with all these people yes

Ozzy..just asking have YOU had success with having 5+ people meeting on a regular basis and having the game not crash or drop players because of various conditions surrounding connectivity?

My point of contention is having been through this before..

1889: I've never played a PBEM game, the idea sounds horrendous however.

Grandpa Troll: Several large games. Look through that list of games in the DiploFAQ. Multi-month games. You see that in diplogaming because these games are so involving. There are problems along the way, schedules change, technology issues, vacations & holidays, etc. But the game continues. That is what is so remarkable about these games.

It is quite common I might add to have subs in these games, and at times for individuals to leave the game and get replaced. That is just natural when you are talking about a game that lasts 3-6 months. But hell, these games you remember when they are done. You remember them years after they are done, and you keep records and refer back to them. That is why these games are worth playing.
