I'm out of Belgrade this weekend, but start without me, with Russians as AI.

Why?

It's simple and Ozzy and Raz know it. Everybody of us is bound to be away a few times and in a diplo game it's not a disaster to have the AI play even a whole session for you. Especially in the beginning.

In HOTW4 Raz was screwed up several times and Ozzy was screwed royally when the AI took over a session mid game. But they recovered.

A diplo game must flow

The reason why our test game was too slow:

quote:
If you try more people than 1 VS 1 make sure you all have a ping lower than 200 with all players and preferrably lower.

Also: the host player should have the most powerful computer (of the people playing), the host player suffers most slowdown and having a computer with alot of RAM can really help rectify this.

Everybody, list your PC configurations (special attention to the CPU and memory), operating systems and connection speeds.

If I play at work, I have CPU 3 GHZ, 1GB RAM and 512Kbit/sec.

At home it's 2.4 GHz, 512 MB RAM and abysmal 46Kbit/sec dial-up

OS is XP at home and work.

have you guys looked in the Democracy Games Forum

try out these two threads

Any interest in Multi-Team Democracy Conquests?

Continue the Feudal DG, except without the confusion?

as to the pbem threads in the pbem forum, well there is alot of interaction on the various games - you just need to be involved to find which threads have lots of chatter

for an example of setting up a pbem game have a look at this thread Clash of the Continents - set up thread

for an example of player interaction have a look at these two threads of the one game

The Second Coalition - 22 June 1799

2nd Coalition Continuation Thread

this was a great game with a lot of internal issues

games rule and I hope to see you all in there having fun soon

I have never ever seen a game online with 5-6 peaople come off..ever with all parties meeting up, connectivity issues abound..s-l-o-w process at best

We've had 6-7 player games get pulled off great with Civ2. Not only would they work, but they'd last for like 8-10 months of regular playing.

That really amazes me, but surely that isn't the norm. Especially with players in so many different time zones.

Yes, in our civ2 diplogames we had players from all over the world. It was easy to agree on a time schedule when you knew the game would flow (ten to twenty turns a 3 to 4 hour session).

The reason why we could play online is that civ2 MP is far better made in terms of connectivity, amount of data to be transferred and overall speed of play than civ3 MP.

We must face it that civ3 MP demands a broadband connection and a very powerful new computer with loads of memory in order to provide a mediocre MP performance which can't match in terms of speed even a dial-up civ2 MP game.

Now see this would kill me 3-4 hours and only get 10-20 turns

I would rather have my teeth cleaned then sit thats long and get so little interaction

No..I am for sure now that this would not be for me

Man..that would suck REAL BAD

It seems like the Civ3 Apolyton University plays its next course as PBEM in diplomacy game style. Perhaps you move your effort there? You should post in this thread if you are interested. Ozzy, I reckon they also could use your excellent diplo game ruleset.

the whole point of mp is to have instantaneous diplomacy available, the heat of battle type stuff. cantbe done with pbem,...

to make this work we need people who love the game, not people who are used to SP (which basicvally is all pbem is)

wait hold da preesses..

why would you say "we need people whom love the game instead of those whom are used to playing sp"

I love the game and because my schedule doesnt permit me currently to sit with 6-8 people doesnt mean I dont love the game

Ok.just straightenting you out..
remember..sp..doesnt mean we are less in love with this game

This is the stupidest sentence I have read in years. Surely, people who play PBEM and SP are not able to love the game. Lighten up, dude.

Full PM-box? Change here!

i am talking about loving the MP game, the differences between pbem and mp usually mean the two groups of people never change to the other type.

i haqve palyed both forms and whilst pbem is good for a quick game it is nowhere near the depth of play found in mp game.

you accuse me of stupidity and yet you misread my post .

I have played real time chess, and correspondence chess. In real time chess you can make blunders, daily form matters and environmental influence is large. In chess by mail, you have days of time for just one move. Everything is well-thought, strategies and variants are calculated to the deepest. My best parties I played in correspondence chess. It's similar in MP and PBEM. MP games may go faster and more enjoyable for the moment, but PBEM games are much deeper thought.

its the element of people making real time mistakes that add to the mp feel.... with pbem you can keep reloading till you get the result you after.....
