E-Bay Pop-up Ad Window ... Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Everyone:

... is really annoying and, secondly, doesn't make any sense when it pops up *behind* the main window. Just who the hell put these ad-makers through ad school? ACME Fly-By-Night College Degree School?

Pop-ups s*ck. They s*ck even more when the people making 'em don't have the wherewithal to put the pop-ups in *front* of the main window.

Sheesh.

I know we've had the discussion about various ads endlessly in the past, but I'd still like to say that the owners of this site should listen more to what the registered users have to say about specific ads and the trend we're experiencing where the ads tend to be more and more annoying/disruptive. IMO it's not enough to advise us to mail the company who paid for the ad...

MarkG, do you want pop up-ads to appear on your site or not? This is not a matter of Gamestats handling the advertising or ebay selecting to pay for a pop up-ad at this time. It's a question of do you, the owners, want pop up-ads?

Send a mail to ebay my foot.

If it bothered you enough, you could change your affiliation and ad provider. We're on a downslide here with Gamestats/UGO, it'll only get worse I fear.

And there's got to be other more userfriendly as well as lucrative ad providers out there. The competition is there, the question is do you want to take a look at it?

I wouldn't suggest that, winston. I've been looking for a new host for CGN for months now because I can't get ad revenue with my current situation, and with all the changes in the gaming industry recently, not only have I been unsuccessful, but it seems next to impossible to boot.

Put an end to popups!

I'm sorry to hear that reismark.

The point is however, it could be considered instead of just putting on a scratched record of "I can't do anything about it". If it's your site, you can do something about it if you're willing to - although it may be difficult.

If you don't do anything to check alternatives out from time to time, you're at risk of becoming enslaved to your current affiliation and advertizer. And UGO is unscrupulous when it comes to advertizing. The examples of this are legio. Do the owners want to continue down this path or do they want to check the alternatives?

Where there's a will, there's a way. Is there a will?

The current buzz in such ads is that perhaps small click on banners will be replace with larger ads contaning more of the targeted info and taking up more screen at the website.

You're so direct sometimes, you know that, right?

Anyway, all I got was their form response. Apparently I was one of 10,981 e-mails received that day. I feel like a number, I really do. Anyway, I highly doubt E-Bay designs its own ads ... that kind of stuff is usually shipped out to el cheapo non-union slave outfits in southeast Asia.

I thought I was loosing my mind or that I drank some bad moonshine when I saw the ebay ad pop up. I have never complained about the ads here because I accept them as neccessary for the site. But pop up ads are the worst. They are the lowest form of internet advertising. And to see them pop up on my screen and not be on a porn site is disturbing. I would email ebay, but I don't want to open my mailbox tomorrow and see that I have 400 new messages.

CYBERAmazon: Thanks for the thread man. Now I know that I am not going crazy and that I won't have to throw out my party drinks.

Suffering from ads?

The pop-ups have just forced me to activate the Proxomitron and bust allads. You'll say it's not fair, but I am browsing on multiple windows and I can't tolerate chaos on my taskbar. I would never click on such an ad anyways; I don't have a credit card so I wouldn't buy anything, even if I wanted to.

This thing is seriously beginning to piss me off. Like I said before, advertising is fine but these pop-up are the scum of advertising. Surly no one goes to a site just because it pops up on your screen. Ebay can go to hell before I go to their site because of these pop-ups.

as we have said already in the past, we dont have direct control in the ads.

on the specific ad, i believe that if you dont close it, it wont pop up on you again

and if you're using to any kind of program for more than just killing this pop up, all i can say is thank you for killing this site...

Tired of ads?

OK mark I am closing it.

It just popped up again when I opened this thread window. This out of control.

And how does ad-blocking softwar kill the site? You get paid whether the ads are displayed on our computers or not. Those who get the ad software aren't clicking on the ads anyways. So the hits on the ads sites will be unaffected.

If this goes on I may have to get it. Maybe multiple windows is a problem. I have ACOL and Apolytong windows open right now. And now I have E bay soon as I opened up this post window.

It seems to come up anytime I hit post reply to open up a reply window. Or to edit my post like now it just came up again.

These f*cking a$$holes should be paying ME for taking up MY computer's resources If I was on my old computer, it didn't have enough memory to have more than 2 windows open. It would slow up too bad.

You guys need to lay off Mark.

He does one helluva job with this site, as is proved by the fact that you come here. Whenever a forumer has a problem, he deals with it as promptly as he can. He does his best to make sure that the site runs great for everyone.

However, he is not God. There are somethings out of his control, and for a guy who does a great job, pestering him over somethingthat he doesn't control takes away from his valuable time

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Everyone is being extremely critical of Markos and myself on this issue when we're not the ones you should be talking to, and no, that doesn't mean go to GameStats (me included). Some of you have also gone off the deep end, responding purely out of emotion as opposed to logic -- this is not to say that this is wrong, but rather is destructive.

We too are Web surfers. We hate pop-up banner ads just as much as you do, but when you're a webmaster of a site you have to stop and think about what could be if you didn't have them and be thankful that you have at least some advertising revenue covering your costs so you don't have to worry about it. Thus, you concentrate on what you really want to be doing when you work on your site: content building.

We have had this discussion before.

If you have a concern to voice about this, go directly to UGO and tell them exactly the same things that you're telling us. If they got enough complaints, they would grow concerned that their affiliates will/are losing traffic and they in turn are too.

See also my response in <A HREF=/forums/"/forums/Forum20/HTML/001375.html">this thread</A>.
