Yeah. If you remove all of the comment lines (the "//" part), it should enable lights.

Because of how the engines are set up, "shiny" objects set up to reflect parts of light. Like if the walls are metal-ish, a fireball will reflect on that somehow, even if the fireball is only 50 pixels large in radius.
There are ways to "block" it out so its only re-rendering certain parts...but the problem there is that videocards work by rendering "passes". It needs to determine which pixels on the screen it needs to block out anyway, which doesn't make too much difference. "Blocking out" means it basically puts an invisible boundary around objects to stop them from reflecting.

the original dooms didn't really have water. all it was was basically regular floors/walls with different textures that were animated iirc. i imagine doom3's lighting and water might not work out too well.

Because its a whole lot faster. I personally never noticed this tearing in any games ive played, and i have vsync off by default in my graphics cards options. It used to give me +5 to 10fps with half-life, back when i had a 32mb graphics card.

I must have missed this. Is this in the mirror in the bathroom near the kitchen, on your way to Marine HQ at the very beginning of the game (ie, before hell literally breaks loose)?
Right now, I've only just gotten my way back to the main building, haven't gotten back to HQ yet. If I remember correctly, I just met some guy hiding out above a ladder, the only survivor I've seen so far...
The imps are freaking my ass out.

Okay. I just don't think I've made it that far back yet, unless I'm very much mistaken.

To trigger the scene in bathroom, you have to equip your flashlight and come real close to the mirror.
Apparently, video card is most important for this game, followed by RAM, followed by CPU. Like I said, CPU being the bottleneck of my system, I still run High fairly well after some optimization.
I also play original Doom... in fact, Doom2 is my most played FPS game, and what I liked best till Doom3. It's nice to know that I will also be playing Doom3 in 3 years when I am equipped with a 6GHz machine, 2 GB RAM and a GeForce 8400 with 512 VRAM. Will make the system requirements seem a joke.
