I was under the impression that there were two, depending on whether or not you send the transmission. I got the good ending, but I really just can't be bothered to play through again to get the other one.

This game is great! And it even runs smoothly on my laptop with medium detail and 800*600

A bit too easy at the start tho and its scariness is overrated. The only time I was really freaked out was in the toilet as I looked to the mirror.

Is there anyway to change the difficulty level after starting the game ? I'd hate to play everything again as a veteran...

I beat the game on "Easy" last week and am working my way thru a second time on "Marine."

I find the game "unnerving." I find myself going real slow, checking all the dark corners as best I am able. But still my heart rate goes up and I nearly jump out of my chair when I find myself suddenly attacked by something leaping out of the dark.

If this is not the scariest game ever, I don't know what is. It is so scary, I find it almost unpleasant.

Can you imagine this game without a quicksave?

As to tactics, I find the grenades a highly useful weapon against a variety of attackers, including those little cherubs from hell. The first time thru, I hardly used them. One thing though, they don't make much of a sound when they go off -- on my system at least. Is that your experience as well?

Got spare money?

I might have said this before but---
I thought the game was incredibly scary for the first half. Then I realized that I was doing the same thing over and over, the scenery was always the same, and there were about 4 or 5 specific frights that didn't change (lights out, darkness, monsters behind, moving objects, sound). First they scared me out of my wits but now it's "Meh, the lights went out. Again. Big baddy coming. Again." They could have done something to make me want to keep playing- like a better story line. A voiceover every 20 minutes isn't something that hooks me.

And don't get me started on the security doors thing- the only real goal in the first half is to open security doors or find a way around them.

The grenades make a whining noise that increases in pitch and then they go BANG!, similar to the ones in HL2.

Nah. All those games, SS and Resident Evil, try to be scary and fail. Yes, I may jump a few times or appreciate the creepy settings, but never before Doom3 was I really scared in a game.

What I love - gameplay was the same in terms of shoot and get to next place, but, every level was still very different. I never got bored. I was fascinated. And what surprised me also was that the same scares were still scary towards the end. The fact that I spent most of my playing time alone in a dark room with good sound helps, though.

SS (2) is nothing like Resident Evil. It is undoubtedly one of the most atmospheric games ever. It's not scary in a jump out of your skin way (that's easy to accomplish), it's scary in an insidious way that starts right from the moment you step foot on the ship. Everything, the zombies, the apparations, the flashbacks all contribute to a feeling of dread. SS2 is a great game, and from reading your post I have my doubts you played it.

SS2 is nothing like RE in terms of how it plays, but they are similar in the aspect that both try to scare you. SS2 has a very good atmopshere, indeed. The game is pretty dreadful, rather freaky, and a good job - but somehow, Doom3 scared me much more. In SS2, I'd think like "that's great, really scary", with a feeling of anxiety... while Doom3 gave real scares where I didn't even think how good it is, being too scared for that .

solver you are such a doom3 fanboy. i'd be really surprised if doom3 was scarier than ss2. i just started playing ss2 and with the continuous respawning of monsters(like the original doom on nightmare) and having your guns break you feel really weak. atmosphere is one thing but a feeling of weakness enforced by the gameplay is another(not to say ss2 atmosphere isn't good). doom3 doesn't have gameplay enforced weakness does it?

I'm a fan of the Doom series, since the original, and as such am bound to love Doom3 anyway, as I'm not looking for some compliciated gameplay in it.

And yes, I did have moments that were scary because of weakness. Like when I managed to get around with only a little ammo.... so being in a creepy place with 20 bullets in a pistol is scarier than with a rocket launcher.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

well I did it. I finally bought a shooter game (the last shooter I bought was Doom2 ). I bought Doom3

The main problem I'm having right now is my sound cuts out after about 5 minutes of playing. Anybody know the reason? I didn't install the direct X drivers because I thought I had a new version. How do I check my direct x version? And would that affect sound?

I really haven't gotten far (in fact I just got finished getting my bio scan and having some guy tell me to get to the marine hq or something or other. I really don't want to play without sound.

well I installed direct X (same version I have it looks like, but I did it anyways). And I updated my sound drivers.

Still the sound goes out after a couple of minutes of playing

And another thing, how do you guys find your way around? Is there a map feature? I often find myself wandering around in circles in these games.

I guess I'll go to the official site, hopefully I can get some help from tech support. If not, hopefully I can return this game.

can anyone point me in the direction of Doom3 tech support?

ID software doesn't have support for Doom3 (only the older dooms). And Doom3's annoying flash site is impossible to navigate. It seems to have info about the game, but no tech support.

Interestingly I tried updating my video drivers, but ati is saying I have no video drivers to begin with so I can't update. I would think if I had no video drivers, I wouldn't be able to run games like Doom3 and KOTOR. I'll ahve to figure that one out.

I tried and tried, but I just can't get this sound to work right.

I'm having some graphical errors as well. Nothing major, as overall it looks great. I think it's the shadows that are causing the problem. I can disable those.

here's a screen shot, for some reason the screen shot is all dark. It doesn't look that way in the game. But what this screen shot will show is the problem with the toilet. The shado cuts the toilet off, and it looks like there is half a toilet.

either way, I'm probably going to return this game tomorrow.

The maps seem to be designed in such a way that you don't feel that you're being led straight to somewhere, but you are. I really admire the ammount of work that must have gone into getting that right. Through the whole game I knew I was on the one straight path (impossible to get lost) but it still felt as if I was in control of the route.

there are a few suggestions in this thread, I'll try them out. hopefully they fix this with a patch.

btw adding this line to my doomconfig.cfg

bind "x" "s_restart"

allows me to restart the sound when it goes out. still a little annoying, but at least I can play the game. other people in that above thread mentioned heat problems. I wonder if that is it. I don't want to burn anything up

Super Turbo Turkey Puncher do you get anything if you keep playing that game? I played until I had over 2000 points. almost as fun as the game itself . Of course I haven't actually shot anything yet. I should be playing and not posting here. See ya.

Diss, thanks for the thread. I'm glad to know that others are having problems with D3 sound also. Personally, I think the game sounds like **** on my system and I've got rockin' sound hardware. I'll try what was suggested in that thread (turning off windows hardware acceleration) if I play again to see if that helps. Id really needs to release a patch that allows for hardware sound acceleration instead of their stupid software sound.

And reverse sound simply makes the stereo sound reversed, i.e. your left is now your right.

finally some shooting

Like I mentioned before I suck at shooters. Some of those guys that shoot back can be a little tough. Because when they hit you, it throws your aim off.

I guess I'm doing alright.

Are there any time limits in this game? That's one thing that bothers me about some shooters. I hate time limits. The only reason I bought this game was because CGW said you kind of have to go slow and cautious. That's the only type of game I want to play. I don't like run 'n gun type games.

But I'm kind of stuck now, I don't know where to go. I found the scientist, he went beserk. I wasted him. They said to go back to marine HQ so I went back through the air lock. up throught he garage. And to the upper areas. but I can't seem to find that elevator to get back topside. One passageway is covered in flame. I learned you can't go through that quickly

I'm tired now, so I'll find out in the morning.

I would have prefered if there were no quick saves at all. Or just like in AVP, have very very limited amount of saves per mission. (In director's cut mode in AVP IIR, you get only 1 save per mission....)

Doom3's atmosphere is great and I love the fact that they made being Not able to see VS vulnerability a big issue, but Im just not that afraid with my flashlight out with quicksave, saving after each room killing monsters. Besides flashlight does pretty damn good damage.... I actually dont feel that vulnerable with it out....
