Face it, the Kerry lied about his involvement in Combodia piece will get about as much play in the 'unbiased' media as the Jamie Gorelick strengthening the wall between CIA and FBI or the Sandy Berger thefts. Much better news stories to be had by attempting to find links in the Abu Ghraib scandal to missives by the admin, how wrong it is for the C-in-C to land on an Aircraft carrier to signal the end of 'official' hositilities in Iraq, or give credence to conspiracy theories centering around how the adminis playing the security alert game in order to drum up support for the war against terror (when in reality its all overblown). |
Given that any Cambodia missions at the time are classified, and we're dealing with the pre-GPS era, all we've got is a he-said, she-said pissing match. At worst, Kerry engaged in the sort of self-serving hyperbole virtually all politicians, salesmen, and lawyers engage in all the time. At best, he was in a different part of the boonies than some other people said he was in.
It's not like making a speech about how Saddam had drones that could be launched from ships and flown remotely hundreds of miles to spray bioweapons on American cities.
Or saying that there was no family influence at all in getting into a guard unit flying a non-deployable aircraft type, as opposed to taking your sweet IA prime draft bait ass down to the local MEPS and starting the process of becoming a boonie-humping 11-Bravo like everyone else whose daddy couldn't fix things for you.

I agree. On the other hand I dont particularly care where Bush spent his time either. Depending on how one views it, one may say that Kerry is more brave or more stupid than Bush.
My question is why Kerry did it?
Are we to believe that Kerry was some kind of altruist who wished to serve his country by fighting in Vietnam but who after 3-4 mo combat time and a few scratches takes advantage of a legal but not often used method to leave combat? In my experience, the guys who volunteer for the high-risk units like the swiftboats just dont exercise those kind of options i.e. to quit early (or to come back and back stab those that continue to fight).
Some interesting parallels: wealthy Mass family, joins the navy while country is at 'war', is a young captain of a small fighting vessel, and is decorated for valour while other experienced sailors call the actions foolhardy.
It could be coincidence but, given that Kerry knew the Kennedys personally and his desire to enter politics, I doubt it.
IMO, Kerry saw service in Vietnam as a milestone on the road to political power. Given that opinion, his actions after the fact and his refusal to withdraw his statements in more recent years (when he easily could) makes me wanna puke.
That doesnt demean the fact that he did serve in Vietnam in combat.

Lying about major policy is a big problem, while embellishing a personal anecdote is the norm for politicians. If you can't see the difference between the two, there's no hope for you.
