A lowly PM is no Head of State. Our Queen would never engage a commoner in handbag combat.

Hmm... maybe we could talk the Swedes into playing on our behalf. After all, I think they owe us one from the recently concluded Euro 2004 soccer finals.

But how do you know the Danish Navy hasn't already fortified the island completely and set up a perimeter? According to Jimmy's article, you can't get to it!

It's summer time. The Canadians can get there now. You will have to wait a few months.

hmm so do you want the Queen or the governor-general-- I'm not really a believer in the monarchy so a deathmatch would be fine by me

satellite imagery. We can pinpoint the heat of every heater and cookstove.

Seriously though-- we have icebreakers-- heck we have ice-toughened passanger ferries-- Its just none of them happen to be part of the Navy

It would be quite funny if this current dispute actually pressured Canada into acquiring a massive fleet of icebreaking naval ships and they started patrolling the Arctic waters like mad, always suspecting something funny going on somewhere.

Wasn't there talk some years back of a Chinese submarine crew landing on an ice floe in Canadian territory?

And what about those Cubans...

oh and Winston-- I was just curious and looked at a few sites on naval firepower--from my layman's reading of this stuff, our dozen Halifax class frigates would be as good or better than anything you could send our way. I guess if you don't face a credible naval threat, its hard to justify the expense

Actually-- canada should increase its icebreaker capability, irrespective of events in the North

People act like its a big empty north and we need to assert our sovereignty-- I don't get that . .. There are native towns dispersed all around that co-operate with candain authorities. Plus there are oil companies up there all over the place and abiding by Canadian law

Yes well, in the event of actual military confrontation, we'd just be careful to sign ceasefires during the summertime, and continue our icebreaking enforced conquest during hockey season.

Plus we'd have world sympathy on our side since we've always been such a sucky little nation.

You should have some kind of presence there, agreed. We've maintained regular naval inspections and continuous military sleigh patrol expeditions in the uninhabited Northern and Eastern parts of Greenland going back a long time. There was a dispute with Norway over Eastern Greenland in the 1930's, and the Germans attempted unsuccesfully to set up weather stations there during WWII, they were engaged each time by Danish patrols and eventually gave it up. Eventhough it's mostly desolate today, you have to have a presence there to see what's going on.

True-- if it were the playoffs we would ignore you .. .

But I wonder could our air patrols have the range to strafe your icebreakers-- they would be really fat and unmanueverable targets

Or maybe send a submarine up-- I wonder how long a diesal-electric sub can stay under the ice?

Then again we could always have some curlers throw some rocks at you--

Also for pansy-assed super obsiquous CANADA to do something, the world would assume there had to be a major affront.

Oh My God, you're completely right! The penguins live on the other pole.
Lets just say that nature civ called for reinforcements, and the great pinguin army crossed both Americas, crushing USA army on the way.
But we'll claim both. The name, a POLE, indicates who is the right owner.

How purposed, sir, I pray you?

Goes it against the main of Canada,
Or for some frontier?
Captain:
Truly to speak, and with no addition,
We go to gain a little patch of ground 20
That hath in it no profit but the name.
To pay five dollars, five, I would not farm it;
Nor will it yield to Denmark or the Canuck
A ranker rate, should it be sold in fee.
Leo:
Why, then the Canuck never will defend it. 25
Captain:
Yes, it is already garrison'd.

Seriously, Canada needs some ice breaker equipped armed vessels so we can actually get up there, otherwise its liking claiming a crater on the moon, or a ridge on the bottom of the ocea.

And Flubber is correct though, there are towns and villages up there, but they're full of Inuit and they barely consider themselves Canadian anyways... aiside from the bigger places like Iqaluit.

Maybe they should make the whole area part of an international Inuit reserve type thing, like they have between the US and Canadian border, so that the actual border would be irrelavent - its all Inuit.

Well its not easy to hide your presence up there and pretty much anytime an oil company sends a person up there, they are met and monitored by the local inuit band who seem to sit their with their fingers on the speed dial to either their lawyers, the federal government or the media.

Up there you can't install a toilet paper holder without approval of three native authorities of some type and THEN an alphabet soup of geovernmnetal agencies

Nah-- all we need to do is catch them by suprise. Declare some sort of emergency and request permission to land one of our helicopeters on the Danish ship. Given the state of our helicopters, you have a high probability of inflicting damage right there.

I think so-- The reality is that the fight for these barren rocks has very little to do with the rock itself and everything to do with the effect it may have on the boundaries affecting the nearby seas.

Some nations put forth positions claiming that equidistance is the proper test and then apply that principle with respect to even their smallest island. International tribunals usually don't buy into the idea that a tiny island gets equal weight with a coastline but international boundary law is sufficiently unsettled that there is little certainty on anything.

As for "all the fuss", this was the first I had heard of this one. Disputes with France south of Newfoundland and with the US on the Georges bank were the last ones that had any prominance and both those involved areas with active resource harvests. Any determinations up north are unlikely since , frankly, nobody ( teasing between a few Canadians and Danes on here aside) cares
