i love how the Islamic world (and now France, apparently) hates us because of our decadence and disregard for traditional morality exhibited in our film industry...
it's like for the conservative countries, we're Sodom, Gomorrah, and the whore of babylon rolled into one while for the liberal/socialist countries we're nazis who still impose the death penalty and allow handguns
damnit! we can't win!

It's not coercive, but Chirac is right that American culture can be overwhelming. The economic power of the American entertainment industry, fueled by domestic earnings, gives it the potential to overwhelm smaller markets. This has nothing to do with the quality of the product, but rather the money available for marketing. If left unchecked, Amerian culture could choke off other cultures, although I think it is more likely that we'll see the rise of a multinational culture rather than a specific global Americanised culture. |
Ah there's the rub. What really is American culture? Its simply a homogenized amalgamation of world culture. It is globalization at its best and worst.
Our food, our trends, our style, our music, it all borrows from all over the world. And furthermore our culture gets repackaged when its sent overseas. Like McDonalds in Israel is much different from McDonalds in Japan or McDonalds in Australlia or in the US. Its not us forcing our culture down everyone's throats, its our culture being sampled, localized, and influenced by everyone else.

That's a reflection of reality. There are two Americas. The coastal urban centres with a "progressive" culture and interior with "traditional" culture.

Look at your own country.
The bible thumpers complain and try to put limits on godless Hollywood the evil left-wing media.
The bleeding heart liberals complain and try to put limits on right-wing corporate America that dominates the airways.

Good to hear that Americans fully support schools where Spanish is the language of instruction, and that Americans gladly accept neighbourhood stores where business is conducted in languages other than English.

You actually didn't know that is exactly the way the law works here? People here can ***** and piss and moan about those things all they like but the government doesn't step in and help them win their little war against foreign influences.

You're missing the point.
People throughout the world believe that their own culture is worth protecting and they want their governments to protect that culture. This is perfectly natural.
Are they rejecting all American influences? No, absolutely not. They simply do not want their own cultural industries destroyed by a flood of products created by financially powerful American corporations.
The problem with many of the American posters here is that you take this as a personal attack. It is not. No one is saying American culture sucks, or American movies are crap. People are simply saying they don't want to be carbon-copies of the US, just as Republican traditionalists do not want to be like Democratic progressives.

For now. There is a push to make English an official language in the US.
The point I was making is that desire to protect one's culture is universal. It is not something that only the French do.

America is the only real culture there is. I don't care about history and traditions, values and ways of life of others. I mean, crap, just go anywhere outside US. NO ELEVATORS! NO AC IN MY BATHROOM! What's a guy gotta do to find some traditional food. What the hell do they even eat in here, I should find out.... ohh I'll check out the Wikipedia. Hmm. Interesting. Hmm. I actually don't give a ****. Hmm. Who would want to live in the clearly inferior cultures to ours? I mean, they listen OUR music, OUR movies they watch and eat hamburgers. Damn it, I figure we have saved them from eating rocks and watching them playing with each others peepees.
No. The fact is, some of yous can never understand the whole thing. While Chirac is banging drums that sounds like brown nosing to the guests, and nothing much else, still. Some of you can never understand it. And yet some of you call yourselves being part of diverse place, yet you have 0 knowledge .
Not all of you. But some I won't explain it even. You already believe in your own versions, because 'makes sense to me!' and it doesn't matter who tells you otherwise. So no one should get offended. Call it culturally handicapped.
This is about the only thing I definitely do not like in general when it comes to the citizens of the only superpower. It's arrogant. You say it isn't, and then defend it when someone says it is 'well you're just jealous/a whiny little *****' etc, makign the point even more clear how arrogant it is. It's not ignorance, it's arrogance, but some of you just don't realize it. No excuse. So if this hits to the back of your head 'Ohh Pekka is coming leftie PUNK'.. well.. that's a great way to cope with it, tough ****.

All this stuff about "aggressive marketing" is just like complaints about "immigrants taking our jobs" - it's total BS. Just as no one jumps you in the street and say "hand over the job, now, or I'll knife you", no one is ever forced to watch American films, eat at American restaraunts. They do so because they want to. If it "drowns out" traditional culture, SO WHAT? If the people really want to preserve their culture, just don't watch American movies! But why the hell should you be allowed to prevent OTHERS from watching American movies if you want to?
It's like if people, despairing at the demise of, say, a certain genre of computer games, forced legislation restricting the production of other genres.
