The Sox were 10 freakin' games behind the Yankees, and in the summer gave no notion that they would even contend for the Playoffs. But Boston still sold out every game of the season. Boston fans care, not because our team always loses and we want to be "loveable", but because the town and the team exist as one. Boston is a sports town as much as (and perhaps moreso than) New York.

The town and team became one in your joint suffering- expect that to change.

Somehow I survived last year, when we lost the WS, and 2002, when we didn;t even make it out of the division series, or in 2001, when we camee so close, and lost. And I do find this funny- funny in the sad, don;t you realize its a game, and YOU are not playing it, but only watching, sort of way. Maybe I am not enough of the "fanatic" part of fan. I like it when the Yankees win, and don;pt when they lose, but at least it does not consume one. Fanatic red soxs fans like youself are akin to the bleacher bums in Yankee stadium- both need to have a reality check

I hate these arguments. Those types of arguments piss me off like when the St. Louis rams thought they were so good they thought no one could beat them but themselves.

Don't you think the Boston pitching might have been a reason why the Yankees hitters couldn't hit during those games?

The Yankees are an experienced playoff team. They don't choke. Face it, the Red Sox are a better team than the Yankees this year.

quote:
A BASEBALL fan might care about the histories of the game-but a fan of a team, be they Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, Mets, or whomever, will only care about their own teams history. To think that somehow all baseball fans save Yankee fans have a deep understanding of the game is sheer stupidity. There is a reason the WS does not get a third the ratings the superbowl gets- if your teams not in it, most people don't care. Thats true of all fans.

Bullshit. A lot of Yankee fans exist in their own world. Most fans of other teams know a lot about the other teams and their histories. Why does this series have the highest WS ratings since the 80s? Because people know the history of the Red Sox and Cardinals. They want to see if history can be made. Most fans know the history beyond their own teams.

And the Superbowl gets those great ratings because it's a one time thing and they've marketed it to the hilt so that it's a commerical coming out. I bet half of viewers (if not more) of the Superbowl watch because of the commericals. I can't tell you how many Superbowl parties have people talking during the game and then 'hush' during the commericials.

I thought that was obvious.

quote:
For thewir amazing comeback against the Cubs to make it to the series? as the hapless expansion team that finally won? Of course, does anyone remember the 1997 Marlins?

And Maz? Dent? Known for one shining moment. And both would pale compared to a breaking of the Curse.

And of course people remember the '97 Marlins. They know them better than the '96 Yanks probably! Many people can name half the team from memory, mostly because of what happened after they won.

quote:
It is not minor, but neither is it being remembered for the timeless qualities of the team itself.

I'd imagine a team which had been cursed for 86 years, coming back from 3-0, down to their last 3 outs in the ALCS, only to come back and then win the WS will have plenty of timeless qualities of the team. If the Mets of '69 have their amazing comeback against the Cubs and hapless expansion team that won, Boston of '04 has the amazing comeback against the Yanks and the cursed team that won.

Just because you don't like Boston doesn't mean you have to cut the team short.

Btw, I bet most players on this team will be remembered well beyond the '69 Mets players. Most people know Seaver and that's it (some may be even able to name Koosman ). In this team, Schilling's bloody sock after having a great year, Ortiz and his blasts thie year, Manny's play this season will be immortalized.

quote:
And yet does anyone put the 1994 Rangers as one of THE most remembered teams in hockey history? Do they?

Yes. And people still remember Mess's guarentee. And Mike Gartner's play, Adam Graves, Esa Tikannean. They may not be the early 80s Oilers, the late 70s Flyers (Broad Street Bullies), or the Canadians of the 60s, but they are definetly in the top 5 of remembered teams.

quote:
A long and storied history do0es not equal something to cheer about

Of course it does. You've been spoiled by your Yankee fandom.

quote:
Lets take Braves fans from the mid 90's- they sure had a great run- but what is most obvious about them? That in that whole great run, they had one WS, and that they got to only 3. But I assume you think Braves fans were xtatic about having made so much history, and their inability to win it all was just a minor setback...

"Most obvious about them". What the Hell does that have to do with having something to cheer about?

Check back with Braves fans in 10 years . When they look back they'll remember they had a LOT of cheer to about. Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz for one. Sid Bream's slide to beat the Pirates, the emergence of Chipper and Andrew.

It's the same with Buffalo Bills fans. While they lost 4 SuperBowls in a row, they look back and realize they had a ton to cheer about with the K-Gun offense and Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, and Jim Kelly. Especially when they look at the pitiful state of their team at the moment. Hey, their coach went to the Hall of Fame and so has Kelly.

This obsession with if you don't win the whole thing you have nothing to cheer about is an absolutely absurd argument and I have no idea where it came from.

Oh, what a wonderful BAM devoid of even a basicly believeable arguement. All you do is say that Yankee fans are somehow less in tuned with the "history" of othewr teams- as if that made it true. Sorry, but saying something does not make it so. Please provide an arguement

Wow, a second BAM! "Many people"? Is that five, ten? can you name them? How many do you know, not from florida? Again Imran, saying something does not make it true-

After all, Many people probalby think the 1998 Yankees the best baseball team of the 90's.....

I do wonder when the whole "curse" was invented? Cleveland has not won in almost, if not over 50 years- whats their curse? The Astros have never won- what's their curse?

Timeless qualities as a team means the quality of the team- perhaps the fact that post season games outside of the WS did not exist ofr most of baseball history makes real comparisons hard to do, but this Red Soxs team, in terms of quality, was no grand, historic team- did they set any season Red Soxs records, or team records? Most HR's? Most runs?

RIIIGHT-

sorry bob, but only History makes that decision. We will see in 40 years.

RIIGHT again.

I remember when they won- everyone made a huge deal about it- even I was caught up in it-then the next year, nothing, and the Rangers are back to stinking. And can you show any backu[p for your claim about the team?

quote:

Cheering about the time your toe hurt because at least it was not as bad as the time your foot fell off is not a great thing to cheer about- something should be cheered on its own, free of comparison.

quote:
This obsession with if you don't win the whole thing you have nothing to cheer about is an absolutely absurd argument and I have no idea where it came from.

From the fact people want to win- specially fans, since they actually aren;t doing anything, so they lose perspective.

So if everything goes "normally", Boston will soon win, there will be some minor rioting in Boston tonight-big parade tommorrow-

Then Bosotn fans will be insufferable for a few days, and come next season when it begins- and then?

Lets see what happens in the post season:

My prediction? Neither the Sox nor the Yankees will win next years WS.

Based on what I've seen from you and other Yankee fans. .. Boston has nothing to cheer for in the last 86 years indeed . I wouldn't gather you have much baseball knowledge beyond your team, and other Yankee fans I've spoken too gave me the same general impression.

quote:
Wow, a second BAM! "Many people"? Is that five, ten? can you name them? How many do you know, not from florida? Again Imran, saying something does not make it true-

Perhaps you can take another taste of your medicine.

OMG! Another BAM! How many people don't remember the '97 Marlins? 90%? Where's your proof!

quote:
I do wonder when the whole "curse" was invented? Cleveland has not won in almost, if not over 50 years- whats their curse? The Astros have never won- what's their curse?

Have they gone to the WS and lost so heartbreakingly as the Red Sox? Have they been thawrted as many times in such fashion?

quote:
I remember when they won- everyone made a huge deal about it- even I was caught up in it-then the next year, nothing, and the Rangers are back to stinking. And can you show any backu[p for your claim about the team?

Can you claim any back up that they aren't one of the most remembered teams in hockey. Can you name 5 teams which are more remembered.

Ask a hockey fan. The chant of "Matteau, Matteau" is one of the most famous in hockey. Mess' guarentee is legendary.

quote:
something should be cheered on its own

Yeah, it kind of is .

People cheered the Bills during the early 90s. People cheered the Sox of the 40s. Just because they didn't win doesn't mean no one cheered for them. Just read how many books have been written about the Williams' Sox. "Teammates" is the latest, famous one.

People cheered the Braves when they went to the WS (and then lost).

There was plenty to cheer about even when your team doesn't go all the way. Are you seriously telling me that the fans didn't cheer when Hank Aaron hit his 715th? How about when McGwire hit his 62?

You deserve even more than I have already given you in this thread.
