As I mentioned when I first started playing BGI, I have very fond memories of playing a ranger in 2nd edition rules so chose a ranger for that game. Rogues are among the best characters for computer role-playing though.
I should play a bit further tonight. Anyone got any useful tips on how to destroy weak wyrmlings? I've killed loads of them individually, but now there are two together, and I keep dying because I'm useless. Not missing my sneak attacks would be a great start, but I'm having really awful luck so far. I know I said I was looking for a challenge, but I didn't want auto 1-rolls turned on.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

try to lure one out at a time. Though when you first go into the cave, you encounter many. They aren't necessary to advance the story though. I think there are a few minor items in the back of the cave. I'm assuming you are doing Undrendtide.

try to use opposite elemental attacks. For instance, don't use fire on red wrymlings.

I think you can kill one, and then exit the cave. heal and then enter the cave again. tedious, but it works. I'm pretty sure they won't follow you outside the cave.

True, reminds me of my dismal attempt to make a cleric archer.

There's also a henchman you can duel rogue/cleric with in Undrentide, if you really want to see it.

Thanks Diss, but I've already tried that once, and still failed to kill them the second time into the cave. Now whenever I leave the cave, the buggers follow me! Jam, I'm buffed as well as I can be, including wasting a potion of aid in my desperation to get through this fight.
I am tempted to start again though (Tumble success: duke ducks missiles from the peanut gallery amid resounding boos), and to take the dwarf thief with me - at least she'd be half-decent in a fight. I'm also tempted by an assassin with spells, and have thought about just taking fighter and mage levels until I can get my hide and move silently skills high enough (which would take forever ) and dispensign with rogue entirely, or taking rogue and mage levels to get assassin quicker, but using a dark (all right, just evil then) elf dex-heavy fighter build as a rogue. I'm going to be a bit stuck for HP again this way though, and relying on my decent dex to avoid the blows that should kill me with my rubbish HP. Advice please!

What about ranger/mage/ass if you really want to do it

Youve got stacks of different skills to choose from post 6th level, and I suppose if you focus on your wizard/int then you will have plenty of places to put your points.

I started a game of sotu as a ranger (Ive never made it out of the first village without quitting to play MP) I dont really want to take any henchmen with me though. Anyone know if Im going to get my ass kicked on my own? Im sure I need some levels of rogue or ass though if I want to pick and disable the really juicy stuff

Nice thinking. I'm very keen on dual wielding, even though it's not the "proper" style Jam mentioned. An evil ranger is a bit strange for roleplaying considerations, but since we've all been on adventures before then we'll know that the woods are always full of nasty things, so why not an embittered ranger?
How soon can I get to assassin though? The good thing about making the character a wizard too, is, as you mentioned, your INT bonus gets you far more skill points than you normally would, which can never be a bad thing.
I doubt that I'll get to play before Saturday, but somebody remind me to walk down the stairs at the beginning, and not to waste the crystal for the teleport ring!

Snotty - I find that the spell Knock is invaluable. Or take a Rogue henchman. Henchmen are good, y'know.

DoY - I think you'd need 6 levels of Ranger before you can go Assassin... or maybe 4... erm... (too lazy to check) You need to get Hide etc up.

wow, Im impressed, Sotu has just eaten up a bunch of hours. Finally I broke through the crushing weight of all the early game dialogue and have piled into the nearest action SP CRPGs really wind me up at the start with all the talking. I just want to skip it but I cant because I wouldnt have the foggiest what was going on But Im through all that rubbish now. My girlfriend is mightely unimpressed ('oh no, youre not playing this game again?!')

Im planning on going ranger/sd/ass so I can pick/disarm myself from 6th. I wouldnt mind taking a henchman if I could find one who wants to be a shadowdancer (and knows to use it when I do!) Ive taken disarm feat and plan on taking exotic weapons so I can get the weapon size bonus (I never actually checked if this works, just assume it does from the description). 9th level or so when I get sd its going to be sneak, stab, disarm, hide, repeat If I didnt have a henchman who could HiPS too then they would just get eaten

The requirements for Assassin are 8 Hide, 8 Move Silently. Both are Ranger class skills, so you could take a level of Assassin as early as clvl 6.

Well I've got absolutely nowhere so far in SotU, and, as I mentioned, am looking to start again with a ranger/mage/assassin combo, but even from the little I've played it is miles better than the OC. The text has greatly improved, and I like the way that they have it so that your actions affect your alignment far more than they used to.
I was a bit annoyed when I remembered that the assassin's garb is classed as armour, so you can't actually cast spells in it, but by the time I get to some good mage levels then I will hopefully have found some black robes.

Thanks for the reminder Jam - I should be able to get a couple of hours play in tonight.

nowhere? As I said, you don't actually need to go in that cave with the red wyrmlings.

You'll find the battles in this game more difficult than the first game. Especially as a low level (leaves less room for error). You may have to experiment with different tactics.

There's this one cave with a bugbear hero or something like that. Taking them on head on is not a good idea. There's a back way to get in there

Tired of ads?

I downloaded the NWN demo recently. It's pretty short. And the graphics are... functional, nothing breathtaking. Despite that, I almost got the NWN platinum edition. For 50$ cdn, you get NWN, with both expansion packs, all this on one DVD. Pretty good bargain, if you ask me. Not to mention all the fan made modules. Its all pretty tempting...

50 canadian dollars for basically... erm... as many hours entertainment as you like.

The enduring appeal with NWN is that there's always something new to do.

Well I now have a level 4 pure ranger, and can start assassinning from level 6. I'm using two short swords and a bad attitude to see me through.
I caught the shadow hart (very disappointed with this quest - it could have been fun, and difficult, but instead, if you engage the hart in hand-to-hand combat then as soon as it blinks away, as long as you have uncovered enough of the map, you automatically run after it. Hardly the thrill of the chase. ) quite easily, and then asked the elven arcane archer for his bow instead of letting him off and getting the good alignment points, and it's pretty good. I'm going to have a go at killing the giant in the cave too, instead of tunnelling out like I did last time. Not sure when I'll start taking wizard levels though....

Buy the platinum edition though!

I thought there was another way on this quest. I thought Rangers could talk to the shadow heart. I'm pretty sure my druid talked to it. I played a druid/shifter my most recent time through that game.
