Controversial Dutch Filmmaker Theo van Gogh killed Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

quote:
Leading Dutch filmmaker and newspaper columnist Theo van Gogh was killed in Amsterdam on Tuesday morning. Conflicting reports are coming in about the precise circumstances. According to his production company, Mr Van Gogh was shot dead, but a local TV-channel reports he was stabbed and then shot.

The perpetrator, who´s said to have stuck a pamphlet to Mr van Gogh's chest, was reportedly shot in the leg in an exchange of gunfire with a motorcycle policeman, who is believed to be seriously injured. The suspect was arrested in Amsterdam's Oosterpark and taken to hospital.

Theo van Gogh (47) courted controversy during his entire career. One of his most recent productions dealt with violence against women in Islamic societies and prompted many death threats. The author of the film, Conservative MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, has been under police protection since it was aired on Dutch national television. Mr Van Gogh was working on a film about Pim Fortuyn, the anti-establishment and anti-immigrant politician who was gunned down two years ago.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and other Hague politicians expressed shock at Mr Van Gogh´s assassination. "This is a horrible situation that we cannot accept," Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner was quoted as saying. The leader of the Democrats D66 Party, Boris Dittrich, drew a comparison with the murder of Pim Fortuyn. He stressed that both men were champions of free expression who never tired of warning against the rise of radical Islam and against growing polarisation in Dutch society.

It has been suggested that this was a political assasination.

Yeah sure And a whore is the champion of love and courtious behaviour.

van Gogh was a very provocative man, and he strirred every beehive he could find.

IMO he was a provocateur first class, and IMO he was part of the polarisation with his unrelentless bigotry.

His films are apparently very good (never saw one, the 'Micheal More Syndrome ), but his columns were quite stupid.

Very sad he was murdered though. Especially for his family and friends, since van Gogh himself was the kind of person he could care less for himself.

Yeah, it funny how some people think its okay to kill someone who critizises you.

My question is: How long the Europe is going to tolerate these barbarians who call themselves muslims. Sooner or later there will be a counter-reaction by the people. I'm afraid that day is not far away. They dont understand how long and refined our traditions of massacring minorities are. They dont know what beast they are about to unleash.

Thanks for the thread, without it I prolly wouldn't have found out until tonight...

Although Van Gogh was a huge arsehole who was always out to provoke people, this is obviously not a fate he deserved

The guy who did it wasn't particularly smart, he killed Van Gogh right in front of a police station, so he didn't get very far when trying to get away...

Tired of ads?

All the politicians all are out to express their shock, and more or less praise him.

Fortuyn was shot by a guy who was an animal rights fundie, muslims had nothing to do with it (though that was the first thing everyone assumed).

There's no real evidence whatsoever yet about who Van Gogh's killer was or what his motive was. Islam was by no means the only institution Van Gogh provoked/insulted/ridiculed/etc. There was an eye witness who said the killer was very stereotypically dressed as an Arab, but in such a way that it could easily be a disguise as well.

There is only speculation, and offcourse everybody is happy to join the speculation.

There is nothing official yet on the 'how and why'. It could even be a robbery gone bad.

The perpatrator is aparently shot as well and hospitalized.

Well I never insisted Pim was killed by a muslim. the point was that according to the reports we've had so far this guy was killed by a muslim fundamentalist. There are too many dangerous anti-western muslims living in EU. There are reports of islamic radicals from almost every country, these people are just like the 19th century anarchists or the 20th century red brigades. They are something we must deal with.

Not really. The reports we've had so far said Van Gogh been shot. That the killer was a muslim fundamentist is just the first conclusion everyone loves to jump to. Reread the article TMM posted: it doesn't mention anything about the killer, except that he was injured and arrested. It does tell that Van Gogh criticised Islam, implying there's a connection with the murder. But what the article doesn't mention is that Van Gogh criticised a million other institutions and individuals as well. There's no reason whatsoever at this point to assume the killer was a muslim fundie. It might have been, it might not have been...

I dunno, maybe. You sure you aint too? The fact that someone whose name is Albert Speer, who is an American who are well known for their hidden structural racism plus that you are a muslim, who tend to build their views of the world around hating jews, west and any other infidel calls us racist. It kinda takes away your credibility.
