Talking over problems BEFORE resorting to confrontation!? What, do Canadians hate freedom? Perhaps I should move to Finland instead.

And where the hell is Slowwhand? I would have thought today of all days he would stop by and say, "AAAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I TOLD YOU SO!!!! GO MOVE TO CUBA!!!"

To those who have trouble understanding George Bush's America, perhaps this analogy will suffice:

Like citizens of the Roman Republic, most Americans are conservative, religious, a bit blood thirsty, and absolutely convinced that we are superior to every nation on earth. At the the same time, just like Rome of old, we are deeply riven between Plebeian and Patrician. But - so far, anyway - we don't allow those internal divisions to stand in our way whenever some non-Roman needs a righteous beating.

Inevitably however, the balance will swing and more and more effort will be spent providing bread and circuses to the Plebeians (or at least the modern equivalents: welfare, sports, and national medicine). And all the while, the core values that made us great will slowly leach away, and we'll wind up as Canadians. At which point - equally inevitably - we'll be wiped out by some nasty barbarians who are shockingly devoid of moral compunctions (read: conservative, religious, blood thirsty, and confident). And the cycle will continue, ad infinitum.

For those who find this offensive? Good! Go read some history! As for me, I'll burnish the armor, offer a sneer, and enjoy these sunny Republican days as long as they last.

Offensive? No.

Laughable? Yes.

It's not that bad. Certainly better than realizing that my country was never in a position of power that they could fall from in the first place.

We've never tried to be. And we've had a much larger impact than our numbers would suggest. More importantly, we've been right instead of just always attempting to win.

Got spare money?

American power has been declining for almost 60 years now. In the meantime, we've managed to place communism on the ash heap of history alongside fascism and now we're working on Islamism. I'm pretty proud of that.

Now, now, there's nothing at all wrong with Canada.

But in the spirit of analogy - and thus from the perspective of Rome - Canada is useful as a minor ally and trading partner, but in the sphere of power politics they are no Carthage, and hence.....irrelevant.

military: anytime from 1945 to 2004. We still have the greatest military in the world. In terms of raw power, 1991 would be the greatest point (largest navy, most nukes etc.)

Economically: in the 90's during the tech boom
Technologically: 60's

Nah, in 1945 the Soviets were still a formidable force, even with nukes.

In 1999 there was absolutley nobody on the planet that could stop us.

Culturally we also owned the world in 1999, and most people generally liked us.

Now everybody hates us, our military is tied down in Iraq, and our global economic dominance keeps shrinking.

I don't count 1945-1950 as part of the economic trend because it was an outlier event due the rest of the world existing in an economic vaccuum.

Argue all you want about whether their nation is in decline or on the rise - the Patrician (Republican) citizens of Rome (USA) don't give a fig for the opinions and feelings of the effete intellectual citizenry of Ancient Greece (Europe/Canada). Rome will exercise power when and where we see fit, and there are none to say us nay.

React in laughter or horror as you see fit, it is what it is.

sounds about right. the question is, who are these barbarians?

Canadians, of course.

We will sweep down from the north, riding our faithful polar bears. With hockey sticks held high, we will cut a deadly swathe through the bible belt of America, dealing out punishing body checks to the soft fat underbelly of America.

Your cities will fall and igloos will rise in their place. We will loot Washington, and burn the White House, again.

We will demolish the very core of American culture. Every McDonalds will become a Harvey's. Every KFC will be renewed as a Swiss Chalet. Every Dunkin Donuts will become a shrine to Tim Hortons.

No one will be able to stop us, and anyone who tries will be forced into re-education camps and forced to listen to CBC Radio 24 hours a day.

Repent now or be buried beneath a hail of pucks!

America, you have been warned!

I realized as soon as the Dems selected Kerry that we were screwed. So I've had plenty of time to to accept that fact and calm myself. Since the election I've been enjoying a little bit of local schadenfruede, as the town I live in is obnoxiously liberal and it's good for it to get a reality check from time to time. They just can't believe that everyone didn't vote for Kerry. After all everyone they knew voted for him.

But I voted for constipated. That steak I had for dinner is still holding on for dear life.
