Outliving the barbarians Support Apolyton

This game has started!

This is the setup thread and sould be closed soon. You can find the trecker thread for the game here.

Do you know how it is to live near a barbarian horde?

I mean, do you really know? The game is about surviving in a place filled with barbarians. Not only raging but freekin' crazy. It will probably continue as normal, once we're out of the Middle ages. If we make it...

Players and (roughly) playing times:

Paddy - Celts (24/7, 365 days a year)
(1889) Pakal - Maya (18-6 GMT)
Snoopy - Arabia (1-5 GMT)
Beta - Babylon (???)
Makahlua - Egypt (6-12 GMT)
Aqualung - Persia (10-16 GMT)
punkbass - Sumeria (15-16 GMT)
Modo - Russia (15-23 GMT)

Final setup:

Huge map
Monarch,
Pangea,
60% water,
Arid,
Warm,
5 Billion,

The rules and the basic setup will be modified. You have been warned.

We will be playing on a Huge map to leave space for the barbarians to roam. No, this is not a joke, yes, the game might get long. Sir Ralph will prapare the map for us. He'll set it up to give us roughly equal locations, roughly equal distances to each other and roughly equal chances of getting slaughtered by the barbs. (Thank you Sir Ralph and others who have answered my PMs.)

To make sure we don't get defenses too easy, no Militaristic civs are allowed. Also, Greece and Carthage don't play, because their UUs would give too much of an avantage in this game.

Rule changes. The "weak" barbarian unit will be the Swordsman (3/2/1). The "strong" barbarians will be modified Keshiks (4/3/3, 2 defensive bombard, enslave resulting in Archers, +1 HP). The barbarian ships will be modified Dromons (2/1/4, 2 bombard, +1 HP). We will have no bonuses when fighting barbarians. Settling in Desert, Jungle and Tundra tiles will be disabled. Irrigating Desert tiles will be disabled. Clearing wetlands will require the knowledge of Invention.

The option "NoAIPatrol=0" will be set by the last player in the turn order, to make the barbs a little more vicious (PTW behaviour - they will patrol if without targets, instead of fortifying).

This sounds like a job for Pakal and his Mayans. I hope we can stay away from a huge map though.

I know that. But they are already covered by the "no Militaristic civs" rule. And yes, I know about the French, but what is important here is the advantage in the Ancient Age.

Put an end to popups!

Yes, it has the Keshiks. But it also has jungles and mountains to hide/defend if they come. And it has enough players on the map to take all the territory and be done with the barbs (or so I think, not having played it). What I want is a vast and empty space for those barbarians to roam - that's why the world is dry and old and has fewer oceans. And I make them even stronger than the original, on purpose. This one is supposed to hurt real bad.

I think it would be worth considering to disallow settling in the Desert...

[edit] Some more SP testing showed that slowing down the tech pace would require kicking Expansionists out of the game (too good a trait under these conditions). It turned out that I'm playing Russia (Expansionist), so the tech cost will be standard (unchanged from stock rules). [/edit]

Welcome, Pharaoh.

[edit]
I probably should warn that this will be extremely hard on everyone's fingernails in the late BCs. I'm just trying out a similar game with 2/2/1 and 4/2/3 barbs and they are already a pain...

Barbarian movement occurs during the last player's turn, so they would be the one that needs the flag fixed...

Thanks for the info. This setting is pretty important for the game, so I'll take the last place in the turn order. Just in case.

After considering, I decided to disallow settling in Desert tiles. We won't be able to Irrigate them either. This means that some land will remain unclaimed for a long time, except with military patrols. Good for the barbs.

As much as I would like it, a completely random map probably won't assure comparable starts. Especially starts in equal danger of being overrun by the barbs. So the map will be slightly tweaked for that purpose, possibly not only by moving starting locations. None of us will know for sure, since we won't be preparing it ourselves.

This thread will sit here until Monday, to wait for more players. I'll bump it tomorrow evening, if it's too quiet. Then the settings will be sent to the person making the map (if I find one till then ). I'll be gone starting Monday afternoon and will be back Wednesday morning, so that's when I plan to start the game. I'll make a separate tracker thread when that happens and PM you all.

Is the world still arid and warm? I don't see why non settling or irrigating desert is a good idea?

I'd rather let us use desert and make the world 3 billion years old instead.

The point of having an arid and warm world and forbid settling deserts is simple. It is to have a large desert that remains civilization-free. For the barbs to roam, of course.

This works together with having an old world. It makes the planet a tad more more flat, so as to get lots of open space (deserts, plains, grasslands). This is not a requirement, as Keshiks are just as fast in mountains and would actually hurt us more coming through mountain ranges. It's more to give our pangea the feel of a vast and open land. Some jungle and forests would have to be cleared by the map maker.

I know it's late to say this, but I have to say that the Celts and perhaps even more so the Persians i'd argue get a bigger advantage than the Greeks or the Carthaginians. That, and Expansionists probably get a bigger bonus than Militarist civs (i'd think by quite a bit).

That said, i'm not too worried about any of them being in the game ... i'm happy to pit my Arabs against a Celtic civ any day, barbs or no barbs
