Chapter 2 - Confirm the message!
DrSpike performed the autopsy of dead Seaman Lawson. He determined that the cause of death was a blow to Seaman Lawson’s head with an oval shaped metal object. He reported his findings to the Captain.
“The weapon that killed Seaman Lawson was most likely a pipe or a tube of some kind.”
“The murder weapon was not found”, Chief Hunsicker added.
“Such a weapon is easily come by and just as easily hidden on a submarine of this size”, commented Lieutenant Daugherty.
“Yes, I bet you would know where to obtain and where to hide one”, Lieutenant Ince was malicious.
“Are you accusing me?” Lt. Daugherty became furious. “We’ll settle this now!”
Captain Ramsey interrupted the quarrel.
“You’ll settle nothing. Get to your quarters, both of you!”
Captain Ramsey then turned to his tactical officer, Lt. Billy Linkletter.
“I’m placing you in charge of this investigation. I want to find the SoB who did this before the end of the day. I can’t have a nuclear submarine with a murderer running loose.”
“Yes Sir!”

“Helm, periscope depth.” Captain Ramsey ordered.
“Helm, bring us to periscope depth.” Captain Ramsey’s Aide repeated.
“Yes Sir!” replied navigation officer. He then turned to helmsman. “Bring the submarine to periscope depth!”
The submarine was brought to periscope depth and Captain Ramsey barely took a look through the device when Lt. Zimmer interjected.
“Comm to bridge! Comm to bridge! We have an Emergency Action Message here!”
“Print the message and bring it here” Captain Ramsey ordered.
Lieutenant Zimmer printed the message and brought it over to the bridge, together with a brand new set of codes.
Lieutenant Zimmer reported to Captain Ramsey.
“Sir, we have an Emergency Action Message here!”
The Captain looked at the message and said “I confirm the message.”
Then Commander Hunter looked at the message and asked in disbelief “How can you confirm this message captain, when it is not properly formed?”
“Let me worry about that Commander. Just confirm the message!”
“I will not, Captain Ramsey Sir! The message is not properly formed!”
“There has been an error in transmission of the message”, Lt. Zimmer explained. “Other than one segment missing, the message is properly formed.”
“I don’t want to hear about this any more. This EAM is an order to launch our nukes at will. We must confirm the message before we proceed with that. In addition to this, the message is not properly formed. I do not confirm the message.” Commander Hunter was firm.
“Well Commander Hunter”, Captain Ramsey started angrily, “I’ve had just about enough of you and your insubordination. Petty Officer Vossler!”
“Yes Sir!”
“Arrest Commander Hunter!”
“Yes Sir!”
Commander Hunter objected.
“You cannot do that Sir.”
“Oh yes I can.”
“Based on what charges Sir?”
“Capital charges Commander. Murder in the first degree of Seaman Lawson.”
“I didn’t do it!”
“Save it for the judge, who in this case will be me, in accordance with naval regulations.”
Lt. Commander Hunter was taken to the brig. A few hours later he faced the court-martial which convicted him of the murder of Seaman Lawson. His penalty was death. Captain Ramsey decided Lt. Commander Hunter be shot out of the ship through one of the torpedo tubes. A fitting end for a murderer.
It took three strongest men on the ship, Chief Kline, Master Chief Duke and Ensign Rono, the Cook to get Commander Hunter into one torpedo tube. Then tactical officer Lt. Linkletter fired Theben out of the submarine.

Captain Ramsey appointed Lt. Zimmer as new USS Alabama XO. Lt. Westergard was promoted to third in command, while Lt. Ince became the fourth in command. The procedure for confirming the message was repeated.
“I confirm the message”, said Captain Ramsey.
“I confirm the message”, said Lt. Zimmer.
“I confirm the message”, said Lt. Westergard.
“I do not confirm the message”, said Lt. Ince.
“I’m tired of this game” said the Captain. “While we’re arguing over this message, the commies might be firing their nukes at our cities.”
“It’s the terrorists Sir” Lt. Ince corrected the Captain.
“Terrorists, commies, they are all the same to me. Very well. Zimmer, send a confirmation request. Pronto!”
“Sir, our communication device is broken.”
“Well then repair it quickly! On the double! I’ll be in my quarters. Lt. Westregard, you have the bridge.”

In the morning Petty Officer Danny Rivetty discovered the body of Adagio in the corridor near the mess hall, lying in the pool of blood. He was slashed with a butcher’s knife, which was found next to the victim. The struggle was fierce and Petty Officer Vossler might have injured his attacker. It seems more work for DrSpike.
