Chapter 3 – Fire at will!
“Then I guess it wasn’t Commander Hunter after all”, Captain Ramsey said to DrSpike.
“Not necessarily Captain. The second murder is most likely the work of another killer”, DrSpike replied.
“What do you mean?”
“The method is different. Another weapon was used. The weapon was found at the murder scene which indicates it was a weapon of opportunity. In the first murder, the killer approached his victim from behind. Seaman Lawson never knew what hit him. In the second murder the victim and the assailant fought. I believe Petty Officer Vossler might have injured his attacker. But I won’t know more until I analyse the blood found on the murder scene.”
“Carry on with your forensic investigation Doctor”, Chief Investigator Lt. Linkletter said to DrSpike. “I will continue my analysis of the personal files of all crew members.”
Captain Ramsey asked Lt. Linkletter about the progress of his investigation.
“Have you found any leads Billy?”
“Yes Sir. I have. The following persons have no alibi for the time of the first murder: Petty Officer Mahoney, Chief Hunsicker, Seaman Barnes, Seaman Sotille and Seaman Bennefeld.”
“Well, that’s progress. Have you interrogated them?”
“One of them Sir. Seaman Barnes. He was reported to have quarrelled with late Seaman Lawson hours before his death. His story was completely incredible.”
“Arrest him and bring him before the court-martial then.”
“I’m not sure he is the killer. I must investigate other leads.”
“Never mind Billy. Your instinct tells you he is the killer?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Then by all means, let’s get rid of him. And you carry on with your investigation Billy. Good work.”
Skanky Burns was brought before the court-martial, convicted of Seaman Lawson’s murder, sentenced to death and shot out of the ship through one of torpedo tubes.

“Sir, we have managed to repair our communication equipment”, Seaman Grattam reported to Lt. Zimmer.
“Very well Seaman Grattam. Now send the request for confirmation of yesterday’s EAM.”
Five minutes later a new EAM was received. Lt. Zimmer and Lt. Westregard printed the message, picked the codes and brought everything to the bridge.
“Sir, we have a properly formed Emergency Action Message”, Lieutenant Zimmer reported to Captain Ramsey.
The Captain examined the message and the codes and confirmed the message and Lt. Westergard and Lt. Ince did the same.
Then Captain Ramsey addressed the crew of USS Alabama.
“We have just received the order from the Joint Chiefs of Staff which authorises USS Alabama to use her nuclear weapons at the first opportunity. This means that the United States of America is under nuclear threat and that we are here to try and eliminate that threat. We are the first line of defence and the last line at the same time. We will not hesitate to use our weapons against the enemy and punish him for their cowardly attack. This is something we have been trained for, but also something we have feared the most and hoped would never come. But it came and we must remain calm in our minds, clear in our intentions and firm in our convictions.”
Lt. Zimmer continued.
“Battle stations everyone! This is not a drill!”
In the confusion that ensued Lt. Zimmer’s order, nobody noticed one of the officers was missing. After 15 minutes Captain Ramsey noticed it.
“Where is Lt. Hellerman? He should be on the bridge”, asked Captain Ramsey.
“Don’t know sir”, replied Lt. Zimmer. “Haven’t seen him in a while.”
“Find him!”
Lt. Zimmer organised search parties and they found the body of Pave, lying dead in the same corridor where Seaman Lawson’s body was found. DrSpike quickly arrived at the scene.
DrSpike gave his preliminary assessment.
“This is the work of the first murderer. Now I can confirm we have two murderers aboard. I’ll have much more to report after the autopsy tomorrow, but I can immediately see that Lt. Hellerman was dead at least 2 hours and that he died from a blow to his head, probably inflicted with a metal tube.”
Lieutenant Linkletter was pleased with doctor’s findings.
“Two hours? This will give me a better chance to narrow down the list of suspects. Thanks for the info Doc.”

Well, that narrows the list of possible murderers for one of the muirders down... One of them is one of these, I suppose(except Skanky, perhaps). But who? Anybody seeing any more clues? |
Two possibilities are here:
One, MPS's daddy was telling the truth. That would mean Hercules, Darkcloud, Whoha, FlameFlash is among the list of suspects.
Two, Tuberski was not telling the truth. There could be various reasons, one of the reasons would be that he himself was the second murderer.
Another fact is also curious. The Captain was rather quick to push Teberski to end the investigation. Does that mean something?
This is not for the current death though. I'm writing these down so we won't lose the clues. If I'm the new victim next time, we'll know that I'm close to the truth.
