But that's not the point. The point is, whether the US Army can stamp out Iraqi insurgents is inadmissible as evidence of how well the USAF and USN would preform in the kind of war we're talking about.

I like the basic design of the Merkava, but it is lagging behind in design. The Abrahms still seems to be the best, most of its real competitors are simply vapor ware.

After ten+ years Soviet Army lost in Afganistan less than 14 500 KIA. Your casualties are growing every month, every year, so don't worry if you stay there for ten years you will hit our record like you did in Vietnam (60K+ KIA).
And aside you Soviet Army controlled whole country, not only its capital and fought vs. enemy supplied and trained by another superpower- USA. Who do you think Bin Laden is? Your agent, trained and sponsored by CIA to fight USSR. Now you fight vs. disorganised mob sponsored by nobody and still can't take control of the country despite most of tyhe dirty work was done there by Northern Alliance sponsored and equipped by Russian Federation, not US.
Collateral damage?
Whole Afghani infrastructure, their factories, schools, hospitals, etc. has been build by Russians and note - build for free. You left only ruins.
