Your tribe has fled from barbarians for many centuries while other tribes have settled into towns and even built walls. The latest Roman despot, Caesar, vows to build a great empire and conquer the known world.
Emperor level, random map, normal size, 7 civs, Re-ON. I expect this will be tougher than usual, and you won't get all the wonders you want, so a conquest date of 1500AD would be pretty good.
Rules:
1) Read Scouse Gits's sxn thread so you know what this is all about. Sign up (again, in this thread) by next Thursday, 12/16/04, so we can see how many people will play. Mention which civ2 edition(s) you use (2.42 or MGE ...). I hope we'll have enough people for two teams of at least 3 players.
2) I expect each round should take about a week and include about 20 turns of the game. So, the game should last about 2-3 months. Each round -
a) Post your save, with comments.
b) Help choose the best team save.
c) Discuss strategy.
d) Play 20 turns from the chosen save.
e) Repeat.
For the first turn, download my attached save, and start with step c). Then play to 3000BC. The deadline is Thursday 12/23/04 for finishing part d), so others can go on to step a).
It is OK to help each other with general tips, Q+A, etc, but not to use knowledge from turn 20 to help a teammate play turn 1.
3) Use the CFC GOTM rules of play. Black-clicking is allowed, for example. It is not OK to start over or reload.

In MGE, if you hit the end-turn key while your trireme or airplane still has movement points, it doesn't sink or crash.
I've never done it, so I don't remember what key ends your turn.

I probably won't be able to play every set of turns, but I'd love to participate and I'll be able to play some sets of turns. Assuming that works, I'm in.

Not my sort of game I'm afraid. If anyone wants to try the same thing with an early landing game, I'm up for it.

Very good! We have at least 6 players who can play most of the game . Since skrobism has only 2.42 and grigor has only MGE, let's try to play a 2.42 team against an MGE team. If one team peters out, the remaining player(s) can join the other team if they want. Does this sound good to everyone?
If so, I propose :
The 2.42 team = monk, Elephant, skrobism, La Fayette.
The MGE team = debeest, Grigor, Scouse Gits.
I am not too sure whether monk and elephant meant to sign up - and if so, which civ2 version(s) they have....
Anyway, if there are no objections, you can start.
If you are on the 2.42 team, you can post your ideas about opening the game directly into this thread. Then play the first 20 turns when ready.
If you are on the MGE team, go to debeest's thread "Caesar Succession Game - Spoiler" and do the same thing. (2 players have already started)
If you are new to the thread, feel free to join either team. Deadline for posting saves is Dec 23. After that, you can discuss what happened in your 20 turns, and decide as a team which save is best, and what to do next. I will be away Dec 23-31, but I don't think you'll miss me.
This would be a good time to decide on more rules, if any. Should it be legal to look at the other team's thread? Do you even want 2 separate teams? Do you need a team leader? etc....

So we're playing a best of version of a Sxn game? Got it.

Is it possible to play the same game in both 2.42 and MGE for a fair start?

Sorry, I can not play at this time. I am barely able to lurk most days. But, as I said, it does look like fun.
I hope to see extensive discussions about why certain choices were taken over others so that this one fulfills the goal of being a learning experience. I may, if there are no objections, ask a question or two if the occassion arises.

SG:
You answered my question understood or not. Thanks.
All:
I will take a look at the save ASAP. Are we the only ones keeping Civ2 alive?

Hoping you're better soon, Bloody One. And I second your request for plenty of discussion of our choices.

Monk,
You ARE a member of the 2.42 team, and we all hope that you will be more than a lurker and an advisor very very soon.

I'd take this as a given, but maybe we should be explicit about it: I assume that once we pick a "best game" to continue with, we should not use any knowledge from the discarded games? For example, if one person explores to the east and one to the west, we should try to forget anything we learned in the game not chosen?
