Caesar Sxn Game Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Your tribe has fled from barbarians for many centuries while other tribes have settled into towns and even built walls. The latest Roman despot, Caesar, vows to build a great empire and conquer the known world.

Emperor level, random map, normal size, 7 civs, Re-ON. I expect this will be tougher than usual, and you won't get all the wonders you want, so a conquest date of 1500AD would be pretty good.

Rules:

1) Read Scouse Gits's sxn thread so you know what this is all about. Sign up (again, in this thread) by next Thursday, 12/16/04, so we can see how many people will play. Mention which civ2 edition(s) you use (2.42 or MGE ...). I hope we'll have enough people for two teams of at least 3 players.

2) I expect each round should take about a week and include about 20 turns of the game. So, the game should last about 2-3 months. Each round -

a) Post your save, with comments.
b) Help choose the best team save.
c) Discuss strategy.
d) Play 20 turns from the chosen save.
e) Repeat.

For the first turn, download my attached save, and start with step c). Then play to 3000BC. The deadline is Thursday 12/23/04 for finishing part d), so others can go on to step a).

It is OK to help each other with general tips, Q+A, etc, but not to use knowledge from turn 20 to help a teammate play turn 1.

3) Use the CFC GOTM rules of play. Black-clicking is allowed, for example. It is not OK to start over or reload.

Looks like fun, Peaster. However, and just so there is no confusion...

1) Stu's Thread??

Is this what you refer to...?
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...413#post3439413

If so, which parts of that thread are in play here??

3) CFC GOTM rules??

Never played there (Probably the only one, huh.) so could you either innumerate the rules or provide a link??

Thanks
Monk

You are correct about Stu's thread.

AFAIK, Apolyton does not have a list of rules. The CFC GOTM rules are at this link:

http://civ2gotm.civfanatics.net/civ2gotmrules.shtml

The main rules are - -

* The Food Caravan Trick (Rule #10) is allowed.
* Unnaturally Large City Sizes (Rule #12) is allowed.
* Caravan Rehoming (Rule #24) is no longer allowed.
* Revealing the map, outside of normal game play, in any fashion is not allowed at any point of the game.
* Hex editing is not allowed.
*The unsinkable trireme/uncrashable plane trick is not allowed.

Remember to tell us what version(s) of civ2 you use. I don't think 2.42 people and MGE people can be on the same team.

Very good! We have at least 6 players who can play most of the game . Since skrobism has only 2.42 and grigor has only MGE, let's try to play a 2.42 team against an MGE team. If one team peters out, the remaining player(s) can join the other team if they want. Does this sound good to everyone?

If so, I propose :
The 2.42 team = monk, Elephant, skrobism, La Fayette.
The MGE team = debeest, Grigor, Scouse Gits.

I am not too sure whether monk and elephant meant to sign up - and if so, which civ2 version(s) they have....
Anyway, if there are no objections, you can start.

If you are on the 2.42 team, you can post your ideas about opening the game directly into this thread. Then play the first 20 turns when ready.

If you are on the MGE team, go to debeest's thread "Caesar Succession Game - Spoiler" and do the same thing. (2 players have already started)

If you are new to the thread, feel free to join either team. Deadline for posting saves is Dec 23. After that, you can discuss what happened in your 20 turns, and decide as a team which save is best, and what to do next. I will be away Dec 23-31, but I don't think you'll miss me.

This would be a good time to decide on more rules, if any. Should it be legal to look at the other team's thread? Do you even want 2 separate teams? Do you need a team leader? etc....

@skrobism - Yes, after your team discusses the starting position as much as you want, you will each play 20 turns and post a save. Then your team decides which save to keep.

Not sure I understand your 2nd question... both teams will start from the same position, which I created with 2.42 (it is attached to the 1st post in this thread). MGE people can load 2.42 saves, but not vice-versa.

Actually, the MGE team has already gotten started in the "spoiler thread", so you can go ahead and post opening ideas here, whenever you are ready.

Sorry, I can not play at this time. I am barely able to lurk most days. But, as I said, it does look like fun.

I hope to see extensive discussions about why certain choices were taken over others so that this one fulfills the goal of being a learning experience. I may, if there are no objections, ask a question or two if the occassion arises.

@Monk - I agree. There is no harm in having you on the 2.42 team. Feel free to participate whenever, however you can. Best wishes for return to health.

@skrobism - There are also the GOTM players at CFC and the Polish site, and the MP/PBEM people. AFAIK the civ2 scenario engine is still better than civ3's, so the civ2 scenario forums are pretty active.

I'd take this as a given, but maybe we should be explicit about it: I assume that once we pick a "best game" to continue with, we should not use any knowledge from the discarded games? For example, if one person explores to the east and one to the west, we should try to forget anything we learned in the game not chosen?

That's an interesting question, debeest. I think that opening up old unused saves is not allowed. But a player can't really forget things on demand, so I don't see how we could make a rule about that.

I think hut-finding programs are allowed under GOTM rules (not sure). If nobody objects, I guess they are OK here. Note: the start position is not a true 4000BC start - your tribe may have already tipped some huts (I just don't recall).

Nobody responded to my question about reading the other team's thread, but the MGE team thinks their thread is private. So, let's agree on a "no peeking" rule. The 2.42 team may want to start their own thread too (and soon, I hope).

Stu,

Yes. This thread is still getting used for general talk about rules and deadlines and stuff, and I guess we'll keep it that way. The 2.42's should start a separate thread if they care about privacy.

They need to get started, since the deadline for posting their first saves is Thursday.
