No, the loss of property and business from 9/11 dwarfs this tragedy. 9/11 cost hundreds of billions of dollars. Comparing the two tragedies doesn't make sense to me. One is a natural disaster. The other is a planned attack.

The attack itself? A function of vastly different property values. A complex of 7 buildings vs millions of cheap homes- certainly in raw dollar amounts, but not in the actual scope and magnitude of the event- whole towns are gone.

I do agree thought, apples and oranges.

Death toll now set to 80 000.

Here in Finland still tens of Finns missing, with 14 already confirmed dead primarily in Thailand, but one also on Sri Lanka. At least 1 000 000¤ already donated to the Red Cross here. Some 100 000 to 150 000¤ donated by Nokia.

How are they coordinating the relief. Just sending to the diffrent countries directly or is there some sort of organized relief that is spread out across the area. That's something they really need to tackle before they just start sending money over.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

The loss of life wasn't intentional in this disaster (not even by neglect), in the case of 911 it was. And as a rule of the thumb intentional killing is much more serious.

But we're digressing...

Ah, no. Intentional killing has different social implications than unintentional deaths-thats the difference. Since there is no one to attach blame or responsibility for a natural act, our reaction is different.

Yes, that's why we tend to consider intentional killing to be more serious. Due to the motives.

Its yoiur teminology that is wrong- how can a death be "more serious"? Certainly intentional killing has more effect on society-given the social reprecussions- that does not make it more serious, or more important.

The actual economic cost of Sept. 11th in terms of damages was about $70 billion (by comparison, the Kobe earthquake was over $100 billion).

But it's a bit too early to tell the ultimate cost of the tsunamis. Right now, the initial insurance claims estimate alone from MunichRe is over $13 billion, and that will be just a fraction of the damage cost (I think the insurance claims for Sept. 11 were about $15 billion). It could also have a huge lingering effect on the already unsteady Asian economy.

I said: "we... consider... to be more serious"

I think few people hold a death caused by person falling down the stairs in the same regard as a death caused by a maniac randomly schooting people.
You said it yourself: social repercussions.

This isn't even close to true. US business shut down for much of a week. There have been reductions in travel for several years since. Extra security costs are required going forward. Add it up and be amazed.

Thats the reaction of 9/11, not the attack itself.

You think there won't be massive cuts to travel to that region for years to come, as well as lowered economic growth?

We're already there, but it takes time to line them up and count them before you bulldoze them into mass graves (they actually do that on Sumatra).

lets see, there are individual country relief funds set up by India, Sri Lanka, etc that you could give directly to. There are various religious funds (Catholic Relief, and its Jewish, muslim, Orthodox and Protestant equivalents) Assuming youre not interested in a particular country, or working through a religious group, theres the International Red Cross, Unicef, and OxFam.
