Sure, a nice little civil war ending up with a new dictator (maybe even saddam again) are better than the current situation .

Don't worry, the nessecary money will be available when they are needed.

U.S. embassy made earthquake/tsunami survivors who had no money pay for their photos for their new passports . Luckily the couple in the above article had an ATM card despite losing everything else so they could pay for a new passport photo.

The animals story is at least part bull. On Dutch and Belgian TV I've seen several reporters testifying that both human and animal remains are scattered all over the place, at least one of those reports came from Sri Lanka. But I would indeed not be surprised if there are disproportionately fewer animal victims than human ones. Animals do tend to have better senses (literally and figuratively).

As an almost-victim of both (IRA attack, severe storm and plane crash -- yes, I'm a true disaster magnet ), I can tell you that to the people who are hit it doesn't make a squat of difference. They both kill you just as dead... And if you happen to survive, in both cases you're just grateful that you did, pick up the pieces and move on (or not and get stuck in a trauma, but that's just not my style )

But as has been noticed, there's no point in comparing the two situations. They're equally horrible in different ways.

In 1964, my ship, the USS Navarro APA-215 was returning to Long Beach when the Alaska Earthquake hit. We were some 200 to 300 miles north of Hawaii and the wave was noted in our log at around 1:00 AM and it was only 3.5 high. We were told that when it hit Hawaii it was over 20 feet high.

Guess that you mean 3.5 feet - 3.5 meters would have been noticed :-)

It's a little redicoulous to talk about tsunami detection - you cannot detect a tsunami, but you can predict such one if there are earthquakes in sea areas. Even landside earthquakes can make tsunamis if subsea areas are affected.

This thread really is pathetic. I can see some of these European posters must have been jumping for joy as they heard about the escalating death toll, as it gives them another reason to troll. That people would turn a thread about such a vast catastrophe into a US bashing thread is pathetic.

Its not a troll at all.

The problem pointed to is defined by the OECD as lack of policy coherence. This is where one government policy undermines or works against another.

One example would be spending 177 million a day on the war in Iraq whilst offering only 10 million in aid to tidal wave survivors. Sumatra is a hotbed of Islamic fundamentalism, perhaps the Afghanistan of tommorrow.

Another would be Europe spending 9 times as much on agricultural subsidies as they spend on aid to developing countries whilst closing their markets to developing country agricultural exports.

If you look at either case, its madness from an economic policy point of view.

Nor, btw, is it in tune with conservative free market economic policy.

Ok recap:

There is some stuff they can do to detect impending doom:
http://www.magazine.noaa.gov/stories/mag153.htm

The US contributions have been generous and will go up. People are focusing on the number that the US government is giving, and not the total aide that will be rendered, especially considering our airlift capacity, the freedom of the seas provided by our navy which is going to allow everyone else that sends aide to actually send it,and the stuff on hand in the warships we are diverting to the Region which can provide fresh water from their desalinisation plants for example.
