Oh please. That's so far from reality it's not even funny. Poor people are overwhelmingly for social security, because the only other option for survival after their working lives is living with their poor children, sleeping on a spare bed in their grandchilren's room. Oh, but they shouldn't be envious.

btw, Berzerker, I find it hard to believe that you have never been envious, especially when you were homeless (if that's even true). Everyone is envious. Anyone who says they aren't is full of it.

I wasn't envious when I was homeless and I've been out of power my entire life (poilitically anyway). Sounds like you're admitting envy is the basis of the left wing ideology.

Ah, so SS breaks families up? Hey, so does welfare. The former removes the grandparents and the latter removes the fathers. Are you now saying the people who look to liberals for social programs are envious? Thats strange, you just accused me of believing poor people are envious and now you're saying they are.
I imagine quite a few poor people look forward to SS after being taxed to pay for it, I dont fault them. I fault the people who push this socialist crappola.

Why?

quote:
Everyone is envious. Anyone who says they aren't is full of it.

Envy - A feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire for the possessions or qualities of another.

I've felt discontent at not being able to play golf like Tiger Woods, but resentment? Hardly...

Gun right proponents argue that the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution should be intepreted reasonably. That is, individuals are allowed to own firearms but not thermonuclear devices and ICBMs. So, why shouldn't a criterion of reasonableness be applied to private property as well?

So long as people understand there is a tradeoff, we could put this to a vote. We could compare Cuba to Puerto Rico as examples of both philosophies and then let the people vote.

Kid even you must admit that China has now opted for growth.

However as you said, there is a tradeoff, so 'maximizing' economic growth is impossible while also meeting government expenditure. But yes, I agree on the principle, government needs a certain revenue, depending on it's expenditure, and taxes should serve the purpose of raising that, while being as low as possible in order to maximise growth.

I explained that to you the last time you tried to include SS under "the general welfare". The burden of proof is not on us, its on those who claim a certain program IS constitutional. Madison in Federalist #41 explains the meaning of "general welfare"... It wasn't a power to do anything, its a "goal" to be achieved only by following the powers enumerated after it. Otherwise, we wouldn't need a list of enumerated powers, just do whatever we want in the name of the general welfare.

But here's a clue, if the feds didn't "see" a federal retirement system for us enumerated in the Constitution until affter FDR threatened to pack the court ~150 years after the Constitution was ratified, then they are most likely re-writing the Constitution. But I know you dont care that Madison rejected your definition of his words...

Yeah, and Martha Stewart supports more comfortable prisons. So what? Of course people in a position they don't want to be in are going to want "someone else" to fix it for them. Just because the poor overwhelmingly support Social Security doesn't mean they should get it.

And, and for whomever said it earlier, I, and most Libertarians, ARE in favor of massive decreases in military spending. I'm in favor of at least a 90% cut, personally.

Its a simple equation really - either you have a social safety net or you have lots of jails for the underclass.

For eons people created that safety net locally thru their communities. It makes as much sense to send money to Wash DC for a safety net in your community as sending money to Wash DC to educate your kid. Oops, we are doing that.

We could also concede that the petty thieves and crooks that populate Australia have been rehabilitated and may return home to UK, thus making room for another round.

Otoh, that's a big point to concede

UR,

And the reason true democracy is a horrible idea is exactly that - poor people voting away all the rich and middle class's money.

AH,

I'm willing to pay for the prisons, not the social safety net. It's wrong for someone to steal from me, no matter what, and anyone who does steal should go to prison. On the other hand, I have no moral obligation to give money to other people who ask for it - their "need" doesn't create an obligation on my part.

Yes, and would modern feudalism be so bad? Feudalism with modern technology would be a haven for the wealthy, so if you're able enough to becoem welathy, it's a great thing.
