During the discussion, he spoke of his experience fighting in Iraq as commander of the 1st Marine Division. Caught on tape, he said: "Actually, it's quite a lot of fun to fight; you know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling; it's fun to shoot some people." In the context of Afghanistan, he said men who slapped around women for not wearing a veil had no manhood and it was fun to shoot them. ---

let's get real here. I was on a ship with marines, I see how they act. They want nothing more than to get some "action" And by action I'm not talking about sex with hot chicks.

This general is just saying what many marines want.

Where I come from, a sure way to dodge conscription is to say things like that to the psycologist at the recruitment evaluation process (if they think you really mean it). The recruitment officers would put you as far away from weapons training as possible.

Considering that gladiator fights were a most favored entertainment form in Rome, and that public executions always attracted lots of spectators, it's quite obvious that violent death is a form of "fun" for humans. And it is also obvious that many people enlist in voluntary militaries because they want that kind of action (many people also enlist in the police in the hopes of seeing some brawl-like action)

This is really unsurprising. And this is why the psychos should be gethered in a specific corps, that is sent to "action" only when really needed. These people should be sent in free-fire zones, but certainly not on peacekeeeping or stabilisation missions.

The Marine Corps of the united states is the only modern military unit I know about that seems to take pride in building up a reputation about themselves as a bunch of ignorant and stupid brutes.

No, I don't support anyone killing for fun. But let's remember that who we are fighting. We are killing terrorists who murder, rape and abuse women and children. These terrorists are barbarians. We should not "enjoy" killing them, but let's not get too politically correct either. We are talking about monsters that need to be killed.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the Taliban for the way they turned Afghanistan into a medieval country once again. But though the "abuse women" part is pretty obvious, where do you get that they are raping children? Where do you get that they are especially monsters whose only deserved fate is death? Unless you consider that every wife-beater should be shot, I don't see how you would give a licence to kill Talibans.

They are nasty, there's no doubt about it. You're fighting a war against them, and it means you are killing them when they fight against you, that' fair game. But how are each and every one of these people "monsters"? Who are you talking about exactly?

Yeah, as long as it's monsters and not helpless animals, excluding polar bears, which can be a bit monster-like at times.

afaik this man commanded troops in Afghanistan who obeyed the rules of war, and only attacked armed taliban. The same rules of engagement were followed as those followed by all coalition forces in Afghanistan, INCLUDING Aussies, French, Canadians, etc.

The only thing remarkable here is the subjective attitude, and that it was expressed in public. Evidenly it if offends some people who think soldiers should cry when they kill their adversaries. Well the USMC is NOT like that, and probably never will be. Note that while the US army has historically recruited by focusing on career opportunities, benefits, etc the USMC has recruited based on the chance to become a warrior.

The guy should have kept his mouth shut though.

People think most marines join up to serve their country, but it's really to kill.
