Perhaps the AB's against the Tory 1st XV?
An English team captained by the aforementioned Michael Howard perhaps?

It was inevitable. Clive picks Wilkinson for the Lions tour on the basis of three club matches. With, presumably, no more rugby for him between now and the start of the tour.

Tricky to pull off. He is Welsh after all. I don’t blame you for not knowing as he speaks with RP anyway.

I suspect young Wilko will start for the Lions against Argentina in the match before the squad flies out.

It does make sense on one level Finbar - if the Argentinians are too much for him you certainly don't then play him against the ABs.

I'd rather know for sure before the first test with the Kiwis.

Yes, I suppose it makes sense to give him a fitness test. But if he's in 127 pieces, does that mean he needs 127 tickets for the flight to New Zealand?

So, Havak, are you learning Argentinian or Italian in order to converse with your new prop? Or, should Argentinian and Italian defeat you, if you were to issue a primeval grunt, would he recognise you as an old front rower?

Heck of an ambitious signing isn't it? An over the hill Italian Argentinian who failed to make an impact at Brive. I hope Pat Howard knows something we don't.

As for your question - the grunt is the only option open to me.

Interesting list on the BBC website. J****'s six best career efforts. I saw the last three. I wouldn't dispute any of them. I imagine the first three are equally worthy of inclusion.

I've seen them all though to be honest my recall of the 1993 game is not mainly of Jonno - though I did notice the fresh faced youngster.

Durban was an amazing game that marked his potential as a skipper as well as a player. The Boks were a far more potent force back then. He only started skippering Tigers a few months before that Lions series and was untested as a captain at that level.

The game against Stade was remarkable in that he was yellow carded early in the second half when the touch judge called a push in the chest as a face punch! Whilst he was off Stade took the lead and took control. He came back on, spoke to the huddle and Tigers took back control. Just like that. It was I think one of the most remarkable club games I saw from him.

The standout game on that list should be the RWC final I suppose - but for me Wellington sticks in the memory. I think it hurt the NZ national consciouisness to be effectively held out on the line for ten minutes by six men?

What was that quote?

Q: "What was going through your head?"
A: "My Spine."

The lad has earnt his place in the games history - he will figure in all time XVs for a while I think.

The Wellington match takes the cake by a mile as far as I'm concerned. Of the ones I saw, of course. I'd find it hard to imagine any of the others I haven't seen were any better. The Wellington effort is one of the fundamental differences between that England team and this one. This one couldn't do that in a million years. He's the reason why.

I caught the end of the Tahs game at the bar (working lunch) and noticed Crusaders have pipped them to top seeding.

Yes, and it's the Waratahs' own fault. They took penalty goals in the second half when they should have exploited their lineout and pushed for tries. The Blues' lineout was a joke for most of the night. They could have lost tonight and still held second spot. They needed the bonus point. It now means the Crusaders will host the final if they both win through. A big, big advantage.

Jack Allen was your uncle? I never knew you were celebrity-connected. Jack Allen was a stalwart of Oz TV in the 60s, 70s and 80s. He was bound to have been in something of mine. Usually played blokes propping up the bar. Runs in the family.

Oh yes, great uncle, and as was said of my grandfather, by his sister no less, "he was the kind of man everybody liked - but you wouldn't want to be married to..."

My Auntie Jean, his ex wife and now widow would probably agree about Jack

Sorry fellas, now back to rugby.....(I won't mention the Brumbies, its just too painful)

I wonder if anybody here was actually pleased with anything last weekend?
Blues didn't get through ...
Warratahs did something very strange towards the end of the game and lost any chance of a bonus point and the top spot.
No need to mention the ZP again I guess?
Either Toulouse lost as well (which might evoke an or two from Tamerlin, should he see fit to grace us with his presence) or Toulouse won (which might provoke an even more irritating or two from the same corner) ...

*sigh*

Well that hurt. I have to confess I had a significant emotional reaction to the game - it actually made me feel down for almost a day.

That means it had a more negative effect on me than losing to Brive in 97 or even the third Lions test in 2001.

Bottom line is that Wasps outplayed us on the day and deserved to win that game. The score perhaps flattered them as they got two breakaways as we tried to press late on.

I struggle to see the 'cup burglars' as triple Champions given they have not won the league since 1997 but I'm hoist by my own petard here as I knew at the start of the season the 'Champions' would be settled via play off so to moan too much would make me look like Mark Evans of Quins.

Not the send off I would have wanted for Martin or Backy but both were their usual exceptional selves in a team that otherwise choked badly.

So long Neil and Martin - and thanks for everything.

As for Wasps - they are going to be an easy club to hate going on Saturdays showing. Their fans set new lows for soccer style behaviour - arrogant ignorant yobs. I'll not be in a rush to buy tickets to see them at HQ anytime soon.

Not that this will be a problem - Tigers will not be serious chalengers for a few seasons now as a we have some big holes to fill in the squad.

Unfair to blame individuals totally but one has to say Corry looked like a man who had not played in a month and Goode choked even worse than against Toulouse. Ellis lasted twenty minutes - he is carrying a shoulder problem and simply not fit to play.

Okay can someone cheer me up?

It gets even worse for the Brumbies, Horse. Sam Norton-Knight, the very promising young fullback/fly half, the one who could be Steve Larkham's identical twin, has signed with the Waratahs for next season. Even worse, the Brumbies are looking at Wendell Sailor to replace Clyde Rathbone if he nicks off to the West.

Oh, and Matt Henjak's terrific performance on the weekend, subbing for Gregan, will only see the mob in the West double their efforts to pilfer him.

Yes...

Stade Toulousain 47 - Castres Olympique 20

Interesting game, without any suspense though...

The Castres Olympique scored two tries at the end of the second half because the Toulousains has already won the game and took a little rest while the coaches replaced the top players needed for the H-Cup final.

The Stade Toulousain is third of the French Championship and almost qualified for the final phase (with the four top teams), the first team that could contest a fourth place is 8 points away from the Stade which is possible thanks to the "bonus points" system... though virtually impossible now.
