Yes, actually you can judge a place by driving through it. It's very easy. You look out the window and you say, "My god, this is the most boring place I've ever driven through." This is not something you'd say driving through the Rocky Mountains or Kentucky. On the contrary, driving through either of those place would inspire you to write ballads about the shear beauty of the land. Now, there's a great deal of divserity in between, but North Dakota is definately on the bottom end of that scale. South Dakota would be, except that in the far weastern reaches, it actually has some terrain that does something besides being used to test levels.

You can't judge a place by seeing the land that exists 10 miles to the north and south of whatever freeway you happen to be driving on at the time.

The state would be nice if there was some prairie left to look at instead of wheat, wheat, wheat, soybeans, sugar beets, and more wheat.

Yes, the Dakotas are quite "boring."

See, if you live in Florida (I just pulled that state out of my hat, it wasn't a deliberate decision, nosiree), you have to deal with crocodiles/alligators, fire ants, multiple hurricanes, twisters, sharks, refugees, wet heat and so on. The Dakotas share two of those things — wet heat and twisters — and one thing Florida doesn't have: blizzards.

I, too, visited Florida for a week — went to Orlando and Disney World. Had a blast, enjoyed every day of my vacation and was glad to get back home. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Unless, of course, I could bring my family along and land a healthy five- or six-figure job.

One other thing to remember is that Food Stamps are a military program. They were started after WW2 because of the number of individuals unfit for the draft due to childhood malnutrition, and they wanted a bigger draft pool for the next war. Cut Food Stamps, threaten the military.

Even worse than cutting Food Stamps is cutting WIC - Women's - Infant - Child voucher program. Unlike foodstamps it is almost impossible to abuse, you get a voucher that specifies you for example can get milk or Orange Juice, plus Cheese with a max price. That's why so many US grocery stores have little labels with WIC on them in the dairy isle.

A doctor on WIC (she was fresh out of med school and had a child) discovered that the guidelines were decades old and promoted the old high-fat, high-carb diet. You often couldn't even get vegetables, or minimal amounts. She has been pushing changing the program.

The Bush administration has been advocating cutting/underfunding WIC now for years. I find it obscene when compared to all the subsidies pushed by Bush and the Republican controlled Congress. Let's not even discuss the value of the taxcuts, and who received them. It's so stupid - the value of nutrition during the prenatal through the childhood years is incontrovertible

Mrs. Tubes,

Food stamps indirectly fund food products. Farmers are also given direct subsidies.

I think when most people speak of farm subsidies, they mean DIRECT subsidies. By your reasoning, almost anything would be a farm subsidy because everyone buys food.

I dont think anybody answered my question. Does the goverment pay farmers to not grow a crop. And just FYI I dont think the ag budget is the one that needs adjusting, If you want to know I think its the aid given to other countries that needs adjusting. For one why does the US always end up being the largest monetary support for all others.

Buying something isn't the same thing as subsidizing something.

Because their price is determined by the market not how much they produce. The more they individually produce the more profit each one will make.

Ok hold up here the farm subs and the food stamps are in the same budget. One cut hurts both.
