I'm new and only playing my second game, but I use needlejets to jump all over the ai's pesky artillary whenever it's left unguarded by stronger units on the way to lay seige to my cities.

I also use them to target probes and other stray units that wander randomly into my territory.

I'm only playing on the 3rd level of difficulty up from easiest (I forgot what it's called) so I guess the ai isn't making it's most brilliant decisions yet.

But the needlejets are good for general houscleaning right now.

I use crawlers, but not excessively. I try to use units in a more realistic fashion (as realalistic as a game about colonizing another planet can be). Mainly this involves me not using exploits. Like putting armour on probes and crawlers.

I know and that is the beauty of this game - there is no "right" way to play it Got bored with current strategy ? well, change faction, ecology, size, sea/land %, set private limits, fiddle with SE, planet or disrupt ecology - I could go on for a while and probably forget some - not to mention those not yet discovered. As a newbee (at this site, not the game - 4 years and still playing) I haven't even never tried to play against a human player witch certainly will give a whole new dimension on both strategic and tactical level. Some day I must take this last step into the realm of SMAC/X even though the thought about getting my ass kicked seriosly for some time doesn't please me .

You may kick some butt yourself but you will know there's a challenge out there. I've handed the AI its ass in every conceivable fashion but in MP there are folks out there that are just scary good.

Its real fun to have people USE the advanced tactics increative or advantageous ways. I still remember one early PBEM when I learned how stupid it was to create a big stack of units in the open. I hade a drop colony pod with 3 drop ground units and 2 good interceptors as cover. When I open the next turn, everything was gone through the use of the self-destruct tactic.

Why do you consider armoring crawlers an exploit? I understand how making a small covert ops team capable of destroying a military unit is somewhat odd, but armoring and arming a supply convoy seems entirely normal.

I always end up using crawlers, usually with Plasma Steel Armor just in case.
But then I don't excessivly mine anything, I just kill off anyone who disagrees with me - which is everyone else.

Armored crawlers and probes are working as designed, and in any event are not game breakers. Crawler upgrade seems to certainly be an exploit, as does self-destructing units in order to blow away huge numbers of enemy units. Oh, and add the stockpile energy bug to that.

They've been used almost for as long as tanks.

There's a military version of an armored transports.

Besides in my country banks use armored transports to transport cash..

isn't the self-destruct a designe feature though? I've never used it. Are they better than convenitional missiles?

You are talking about APC's - they are expected to go into combat, thus they are armoured. I was talking about things like lorries - why would they have armour?

In wartime - yes.

Remember that we're not on Chiron..

And after all - why not implement thing which is technically possible.
On Earth if someone decided to armor his milk cistern, people would just say he's wasting resources, not exploiting anything.

ON the other side - when you'll take it to scrapping facility ir'll cost WAY more because all that metal and other materials will clearly be valuable.

I think Sikander was referring to using upgraded crawlers to rush SPs. Many consider that an exploit since it seems artificial and the AI never does it.

Damage is equal to weapon strength divided by 2 multiplied by your reactor value

So a weapon 10 unit with a fusion reactor kills ALL adjacent fission units (armor is irrelevant) unless in a base ( I'm not certain if bunkers act as bases for this purpose).

It can be a super effective tactic against crawler fields. Plink a couple to get into the middle and then kaboom.

Its also the reason that I say that there is no combination of units that is survivable in the open against an opponent with tech parity and the same number of minerals to spend attacking your stack. Once you get to weapon 10 values and above, you are talking reducing the strength of EVERY unit in the stack by half with a single self destruct ( assuming same reactor values) and 2 self destructs kills the entire stack

In order to balance self destruct, I think it should cause extra drones...I mean, come on people, like people enjoy being creameted by a nuclear bomb...

IIRC self destruct will in fact take out bunkered units as well.

Is the range of self-destruct damage limited to adjacent tiles? Is diagonal considered adjacent? Does anything (e.g a larger reactor) increase the range?

Yes it is limited to adjacent tiles and yes diagonal is considered adjacent. Nothing makes the range bigger ( I know you are thinking of Planet Busters with that idea)

Fine idea against strong stacks but very wasteful against scattered unit and useless against any unit in a base

I couldn't figure out how to self destruct? I looked on the menus but didn't see it there. What's the hotkey for it?

Does the reactor have to be fusion or higher? (mine was still fission).

Anyways, it was still the same game I was playing with the 2 morgan factions (I was talking about earlier), but the power went out. I hope my autosaves was on. I went a long time without saving. It seems I lose power alot at my house. At least twice a year. oh well.

that game was going difficult. As one of the morgan factions was seriously out-researching me and getting all the SP's. I figure I should be able to still get ascent to transcendence because I can literally buy it with my free market economy. I'm bringing in good energy. But it could be a close game. It's funny how well they do with one line added in (expand). Though they may have started in the monsoon jungle- I keep forgetting to check.

Disband the unit (hotkey is Shift + d). You'll be presented with several options, one of which is "Activate self-destruct overload sequence!"
