For what it's worth;

GOTO commands in the event file that fire off every turn and tell Canadian units to move in a specified direction might solve this problem . . . . if you can get the AI to follow the commands.

Likewise, making the individual units much more expensive is a possible solution as well, one that I've used often.

As I've pointed out in several readme files, the game's "realism" disappears when the AI covers the map with wandering military units, aimlessly blundering along, doing nothing in particular. I can't think of a single historical period/situation in which precious military resources were told to just mosey about the countryside randomly.

The AI is the pest here...

In other theatres, it is not a hassle, as the Germans and Russians
(for instance) are always in battle with each other and at close-quarters.

The isolated nature of the North American continent means that the
AI is tempted to do the infamous ‘wandering routine’...But I wonder
if a combo of much more expensive units and taking away the
'expansionist' nature from the commonwealth may stop them
building silly 'jobless units' and go straight for the enemies....

I will make changes and see what happens!

Just a question, for you chaps -

In 1940 who should own:

Kabul,
Tehran,
Shiraz,
Belgrade,
Bucharest,
Zagreb,

Given that the list of civ will be the same, but with China added...

I hope Koby does not mind, but I am tempted to borrow his transport
ship settings to make these units surge out and do the business!

PS
He will be fully credited with this breakthrough, of course!

Tired of ads?

Kabul - neutral
Tehran - neutral
Shiraz - neutral
Belgrade - neutral
Bucharest - pro-Axis
Zagreb - neutral

I´d guess something like this ...

Oh, and Curt, one more thing, as I'm sure you strive for a degree of accuracy. Starting a new game as the Japanese in v.3, I noticed you have Nara as the city in Okinawa. This should be Naha. Nara is a large city on the north coast of Honshu that was once the Imperial Capital in the feudal days. Naha is the biggest settlement in Okinawa.

Oh, and Curt, one more suggestion. I think you should put the Dutch East Indies under the Brits if the Japanese can't attack neutrals. The Japanese invaded the islands shortly after declaring war on the British Empire.

Playing as the brits now, it's dec 1940. I've managed to hold the British isles so far, London was emptied on one turn (underestimated the naval forces of Germany) but I reinforcred it and sunked their stacked fleet (all of it ain't gone yewt though). I've realised that ships is the best way to attack coastal cities. When I playtested with Germany I used mostly ships and infantry.

Anyways, I've advanced in northern Africa, to their line of fortresses, puching towards Tripoli, which I guess I will take soon when ships arrive to the scene.

The Commonwealth actually attacked Brest and landed troops there (sending in their fleet there too though). It was itneresting and fun to see. They did it recently so I'll see if they can hold out. This will buy me some time to attack Norway. Mogadishu has fallen, but I don't have the manpower to attack Addis Ababa now. It will be interesting to see what happenes when the Japanese attacks.

Looking forward to the update, keep up the good work Curt.

This is something I will look into - I imagine the Japanese can
be made to break the hex alliance with the barb/neutrals via
events, but failing that, I will go with your suggestion...

I will make sure Germany has less naval clout in the next
update, they should be relying on planes and the odd
amphibious SS attack to try and take 'old London tahn!'

Good luck with your attacks!

Well, their fleet does come in handy when facing the British fleet.
I was thinking, one negative thing with everybody having alliances with the neutrals is that if the neutrals have a lot of mobile units, they will probably wander through the players territories.

UPDATE!

*New order of units outlined.
*Garrison unit added.
*Sherman and Wolverine made available to all Allies.
*Chinese civ added.
*Ki-67 Peggy longrange bomber added.
*105mm SP Wespe Added.
*Unit stats and costs now tweaked.
*All unit firepower ratings set to one.
*Canada has remained a commonwealth power.
*Mountains now passable.
*Changed improved RR graphic.
*Made Barbs into the neutrals.

Current task - Unit placement.
Due to the new layout of units, the whole setup must be
changed, but this is a welcome chance to fix some issues.

Soon, I will request Agricola to enter the civs into hex alliance with the barbs.
I am assuming an event command can make a civ go to war with the barbs too?

More to come!
Things are looking better now...

So you are probably safe in getting the alliances set up at any convenient time. Subsequent development work should have no effect.

AGRICOLA, could I ask you to carry out that hex trick if you have the chance?

Just to remind:
The treaties are located in the following bytes (ToT 1.1 only):

2984-3015 + 3348N, where N is the civ number (0-7), starting with Barbarians.

Zipped save and scn files are attached!

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to be a bit slow. RL reared its ugly head.

I edited both D3.scn and DICTA-MAP4.sav.

D3 fixed.scn and DICTA-MAP4 fixed.sav have everyone allied with the Rebels.

You can check it out in DICTA-MAP4 test.sav where, in SW Sahara, there 7 units from the various civs ready to fight 7 Reb units.

Seems to work well!

Great work, Agricola - This is a real breakthrough!

The new Chinese civ seems to be holding out against Japan.
With a human playing, it may be a really fun challenge!

My next task is now to fine tune the diplomacy.

I want to set up the chance that China and the other civs can talk.

Germany has very limite diplomacy...For obvious reasons!
The Allies might be able to talk to the Soviets...What do you think?

It opens the possibility for war, but might be fun...

Nice one, Agri!

It seems the barb/neutrals attacked the brits with their test
stuka, but this is no matter as they will have no offensive
units in-game. All the have are harmless garrisons...

So the barb experiment is triumphant!

If it holds out for the whole game, then I might use this
from now on to give the player an extra civ to choose from!

Grand!
