You could ask a 5 year old whether it's nicer to pressure people or not to pressure them. But that doesn't make him an expert on the situations where such pressure is likely to occur.

And... after several hints have already been given, I'd like to ask if it wouldn't be more appropriate to start a new thread on "torture", instead of continuing to threadjack what I consider to be a very important subject by itself.

That was what I wanted to discuss. I doubt anything will happen to Newsweek other then they'll catch some flack from their cometitors for the next few days and maybe a few of us who pay attention will trust them a little less in the future. I wish something would happen to them to punish them for publishing unsupported rumors based on the word of one source who really couldn't back up his claim with details. I know editors are under pressure to sell papers and sensationalist stories is a good way to pump up sales but dropping a bomb like the original claim will end up getting people killed. In deed 15 people were killed in riots in Afghanistan the day it was published.

Shouldn't media companies be a bit more careful about checking their sources when the story might get people killed?

So you're saying former prisoners cant judge if they were tortured or not becouse they are not experts on torture????

The really sad part is they new the factual basis for the story was shaky and ran with it anyway. What kind of breakdown in procedure has to happen for that to occur?

In some cases, I suspect part of the answer depends on their determination to make the administration look bad.

It may sound polemic, but I honestly believe it played an important role in this case.

According to the Memo that was approved by the White House, fixed positions are legal, and the memo was specifically prepared by Alberto Gonzales for the War on Terror, before anyone ever stepped foot in Iraq.

Because of the past f uckups of the US regarding torture:

1) Abu Gharib

2) Guantanamo -- holding innocents without charging them

Our credibility in the Muslim world has pretty much been trashed. So when they heard the story, of course they believed it, as we've done far worse things already, they weren't suprised to hear the story.

That memo set a policy and that policy is why these stupid things have happened.

The link is clear as day to see.

The ones who have accused gitmo torture are saying stress positions, which definitely IS torture, one of the most famous and oldest forms of it. To debate if it is torture or not is freaking retard debate and shows what spinning can do to weak minds. Anything from static pain to .. well to anything is considered torture when it lasts long. A test of static pain is easy. Take heavy bags into both hands. Now don't let them down. Put 30 pounds of each of the bags and hold them for 20 minutes straight. Can't do it? Don't move. Don't twitch. Hold them. Your arms start hurting and you feel like your joints will come out of their place? Fingers are seriously getting streched and it feels like you have knives in your hands? This is the moment where I come and strap those babies in your hand so you can't let them down and make you stay in that position. Back starts hurting? Bro we got few hours to go.... or more, who knows. Here, put a hood over your head so you don't have too much of your senses working. Here, here's some ear plugs, so you won't hear too much or see too much. Great way to loose the sense of time. Oh you think you've been there for half a day? It's just 30 minutes bro, keep on going. We haven't even started with the STRESS POSITIONS yet, the next level of this game.

If they are used or not, that I don't know. There are claims, sure. If it's true or not, I don't know. But these practices are DEFINITELY torture and one fo the worst forms of it, and extremely physical. You ever seen people walk funny? Some torture victims have pains that never leaves, just from stress positions. Some of them walk funny, because their.. ... how do you say it.. 'motorics' are ****ed up after that crap done long enough. Etc etc etc.

The topic of the thread ISN'T about how the muslim world read the story - it is about the bad quality of the newsweek research of the story.

I know It's Oerdins thread, but I think he will agree.

If the theme of the thread was torture, yes, it would be true, but the issue are the false history in newsweek and how it got printed.
