Nah, rightwingers love conspiracy theories, and changing the topic to stronger ground as much as lefties. Its just here on 'poly there are some folks who actually see the benefit of staying on topic.

In terms of connections, AFAICT to the extent the riots were about something other than the toileted Korans, it had much more to do with harsh tactics IN Afghanistan, breaking down doors into folks houses and stuff like that, than to Gitmo. There may also be connections to Northern Alliance types who feel excluded from Kharzai's latest govt.

Just my 2 cents:

Although the Guantanamo & Abu Ghraib situations certainly didn't help, does anyone doubt the Muslim response to the Quran desecration allegations would have been as intense without those events? Given the "death sentence" (can't recall the proper term) imposed on Rushdie for merely portraying Muhammed in a non-doctrinal light, I think you'd see rioting even without the antecedent atrocities.

Except NEws week really doesn't care about "containing damage" or any other political effects. Instead they want to sell as many papers as possible and being forced to retract such a big story damaged their creditability so they wouldn't have done it unless they had a very good reason.

He's totally right that Abu Ghraib did have an effect. Newsweek didn't have total verification, but said, well there have been numerous reports of bad things we've done in Iraq and Guantanamo, so they were more likely to believe this report. I fail to see how they have no relevance here.
